I imagine it’s supposed to let people know which posters are highly regarded as a way to give credence to what that person is saying (or take it away as the case may be).
Apparently there is a trick to add or subtract huge amounts of points, making the whole thing a good idea, but completely worthless as an actual tool since idiots who don’t have a good idea in their head & can’t earn points honestly instead just tear down those who can.
