Which player has surprised you coming out of college?  Who has surpassed your expecations in the league and who has done the opposite. For me, it’s Paul Pierce.  Coming out of Kansas, I did not give this guy any chance of becoming a star.  I thought he was unathletic and slow.  Although he still doesn’t blow by anybody, I overlooked one thing:  he is a straight baller.  Over the last 13 years he has been durable and consistant and has played equally well with really bad and good teams.  Plus, this guy gets in better shape each year!

Tyreke Evans, saw him in high school a lot and thought he was just not a hard worker, he never really tried and seemed lazy out there, and he couldn’t shoot. I give him credits he’s doing great in the NBA, still not sure if he’s the type of player that’ll win you a championship though.

Deron Williams is the 1st player that comes to my mind. I never would’ve thought he’d be in the upper echelon of ballers in the NBA. I knew he’d be good, but not THIS good!

Deron Williams and Russell Westbrook. I didn’t buy into the hype for Williams at all. Also I thought Westbrook over Gordon at the time was just plain stupid. I thought he was going to be kind of what Shannon Brown is now. Boy was I wrong.

I am lumping Shawn Respert (Michigan State) and Joe Forte (North Carolina) together as they were both undersized shooting guards who could score, but could not play the point or find a position in the Association.

I saw Nick Van Exel play in high school and I thought he was good, but not an NBA talent.  He ended up at some juco in Texas ("pumping gas" is what someone told me) and ended up at Cincinatti with Coach Huggins and having a good college career and a better than average pro career.

And love Rony Seikaly.  I was not incredibly suprised by his lack of production in the pros but must give him kudos for landing his wife.  Although they are now divorced, that must have been 6 very good years.
