While reading through the black qb’s topic, I started wondering if anyone noticed that White American basketball players are passed upon versus theyre european counterparts..It was intersting to see 6’6 pg Nick Calethes not get any draft hype during his time at UF….had he grown up in greece, scouts would be drooling over him as a lottery pick.

John Scheyer as well..I know these guys arent out of the world athletes..but theyre tall white pg’s that produce. Throw in vasquez in that mix to, even though venezualean. I firmly believe if these guys were not american, or in vasquez’s case played hs and college bball here, they would have had lottery and 1st round hype

    What do you guys think?

I dont know much about Calethas, but Scheyer is just not NBA material. Scheyer is highly skilled, high basketball IQ, and good shooter, but lack of speed at the position he plays.

Most of it has to do with athleticism at the postion not skill.

There are many white americans in the NBA. Look at Brian Cardinal, he’s a undersize PF, been in the league for a long time. But if Cardinal was playing SF or SG, no way he makes a roster, he doesnt have the foot speed to guard SF or SG.

But your topic is off basis because it’s not a race thing, the NBA its about a combination of skill level, athleticism, and potential.

I will agree that the original poster is kind of right. I think what is going on is that NBA scouts just don’t do quite as good a job as you would hope figuring out how overseas players will adapt to the NBA. Any draft of a player has some risk, but for a good period of time it seemed like the NBA was drafting a higher percentage of Europeans that just couldn’t get it done in the NBA. Since most overseas high level players are white (I’m just guessing that this is the case, but the next highest level basketball leagues are European and the players seem like they are majority white when I see those games), this seems like a race issue. But really, I think, it is just the NBA scouts not being able to make good estimates of how those players will function in the NBA. They seemed to overestimate that a whole bunch of young tall European players (who happened to be white, but that is besides the point) where going to continue to develop and become players in the NBA. The funny thing is that a lot of these guys weren’t really doing that much in their home league. But the excuse was always made that Eurpean coaches wouldn’t play them because of seniority traditions and that the European game was so much tougher than the American college game because these were games against grown men. So the Euro kids got drafted in the late first round and after a few years it keeps turning out that they can’t do much more than shoot jumpers at some mediocre percentage.

I think the NBA is getting better at figuring out European talent, but Vesely and Rubio will be two good tests of that, if and when we next have an NBA season. And frankly, I think there is good chance we are going to see that the scouts blew it again once those guys get into the NBA.

that’s not a race issue… that’s a hype and evaluation issue : nowadays european pg have more hype than white american born ones.

maybe because of a combination of exotic names, less exposure (so not a precise knowledge of their real level or potential) and different kind of formation (playing professional at an early age).

maybe scouts think too much about age and potential (which is only dust in the wind afterall) trying to land the next big individual thing whereas they should trust seniors on their ability to keep on progressing and be part of a team.
