Which current NY coach would you rather have coaching your team, Avery Johnson or Mike Woodson?

Both coaches are good defensive coaches in my opinion, but the big separation is on offense. Mike Woodson’s offense as we’ve seen with his time coaching the Hawks and last year with the Knicks is star isolation. What I mean by that is he simply gives the star the ball and everyone moves out of the way and lets him go at it. We saw it often with Joe Johnson in Atlanta and this past year with Carmelo Anthony. I don’t think Avery Johnson is an offensive coaching genius, but his scheme is better than isolation heaving, 1 on 5 type basketball. Isolation for a full game can win some regular season games, in my opinion, but even with the best scorers it doesn’t work if you want to win more than the first round. So personally I’d choose Avery Johnson over Mike Woodson 10 out of 10 times.

I’ve seen some people debating recently over who the better coach is Avery Johnson or Mike Woodson. I just wanted to see who everyone would rather have coaching their team?

Mike Woodson for me. He just seems more personable then Avery, and that can go a long way with some players. For all the grief Woodson gets, he did make the Hawks a better team every year, and really pulled in the reins when he took over the Knicks job last year.

I agree that Mike Woodson is likely more personable. My main issue with Woodson is his offensive game plan is ridiculously limited. All his teams have done is isolation offense. I think if Woodson was a better offensive coach he would’ve never lost his job in Atlanta. You can’t win championships simply through one on one basketball. The Hawks always got roughed up by the elite teams because of their weak offensive game plan.

Granted, I only really paid attention to Avery when he was with Dallas, so maybe this isn’t valid anymore, but I’ve got to go with Woodson.

I’ve never seen a coach gameplan his way into worse matchups than when I watched Avery Johnson coach in Dallas. He was fired from Dallas after going an entire series thinking a broken down Jerry Stackhouse could guard Chris Paul.

I don’t know if you remember that Dallas roster. Stackhouse was their best option that year to guard Chris Paul. Jason Kidd couldn’t do it and neiter could Beaubois. It sucked not having a better option than an old Stackhouse, but that’s all they had.

I know that you don’t remember their roster that year, because Josh Howard and Antoine Wright were the best options to guard Paul. Tyrone Lue, JJ Barea, and Jason Terry were better options than Stackhouse, who was a bad defender before he lost those three steps. And Roddy B wasn’t on the team for another two years.

But nice try. A for effort.

Is this a trick question, or does Phil Jackson coach the Nets now?

Listen, I am not a huge Mike Woodson fan. But at least he understands how to teach defense, and seemed like he re-energized the Knicks at the end of the last year. Avery Johnson is an awful coach. And I don’t know anything that supports anything else.
