when u think about it

the memphis grizzlies selected hasheem thabeet last year #2 in the draft, when they could've drafted i say.....stephan curry, a shooter who was much needed, this years draft is full of shot blockers, who they could've went after 12th this year, whiteside is a much better prospect than thabeet, so is larry sanders and jarvis vernando, as a grizz fan i will say that was a wasted draft other than sam young

Whiteside, Varnado and Larry

Whiteside, Varnado and Larry Sanders are not "much better prospects than Thabeet". A matter of fact they're not better prospects at all.

Whiteside is just as raw offensively as Thabeet was last year and Thabeet is 3 inches taller and 40 lbs heavier than the frail Whiteside. Thabeets size and shot blocking ability are rare and he improved in every year of college ball.

If Memphis had chosen Curry over Thabeet last year they would have been lambasted for it at the time by both the media and fans. Most people were in agreement that Thabeet was a top 5 prospect at worse.

Regardless of whether or not he ends up a bust, saying Thabeet was a worse prospect than Varnado and Larry Sanders is simply ignorant.

i'll agree that vernando and

i'll agree that vernando and sanders aren't as good of prospects but whiteside is, whiteside is raw offensively but he has the touch to be a solid scorer in the league, not to mention that whiteside did his measurements in flipflops thats atleast an inch missing, whitesides wingspan is longer too, and u have to look at where thabeet was drafted and where whiteside will be

LOL..The Grizzlies Owner,G.M,

LOL..The Grizzlies Owner,G.M, Coach and Director of player personel each came to an agreement that defense was what the team really needed...If you noticed all 3 of their draft picks were defensive oriented players...

Coach Lionel Hollins & the owner Micheal Heisley wanted to draft local product Tyreke Evans..Evans was their guy all the way up to the week before the draft..They felt Conley would make that next step to becoming a solid point guard..So with Conley & Mayo set in the backcourt..They decided on Thabeet..They felt he was what they needed to battle the big men in the West....
Some within the organization had wished that Greg Monroe had came out..They loved his shot blocking & rebounding skills...

and y draft thabeet when u

and y draft thabeet when u have marc gasol? he's only 2 inches shorter than thabeet, can bang and score, also blocks a legit amount of shots, y waste a #2 pick on player who will be on the bench his entire rookie contract? steph or tyreke couldve come right in and contributed

a lot of people werent sure

a lot of people werent sure about thabeet last year. But after griffin, there wasnt a consensus number 2 player. It's easy in hindsite to say curry or whoever, but at the time it was a tough choice and they went with a 7-3 defensive presence who everyone knew would take some time. I thought they should have gone with Jordan HIll since it was before they aquired zach randoplh and i thought hill would comliment marc as a pf, but im sure i would be ridiculed for that as well right now.

They took Thabeet because

They took Thabeet because they thought he could be a Dikembe Mutombo. They took it on a potential basis and Saw that he improved every year so they thought he would do the same in the NBA. They arent far off he could still get better with time. The real problem is his offense. He can block shots and rebound right now. He averaged 1.3 bpg in 13 minutes a game. i wouldnt call him a bust yet. but why talk about steph curry when they couldve also taken tyreke evans? even though i like steph. just not as much as reke

Mutumbo had an impact right

Mutumbo had an impact right away.......Dude made the All-Star team his rookie year after averaging 16 points -12 rebounds & 3 blocks...In 1991 Some people thought he should've been number 1 ...But his lack of offensive skills held him back...

I think Memphis picking

I think Memphis picking Thabeet number 2 was a gutsy call but it is looking like it could work out for them also Marc Gasol play was much improved so maybe it also could have been used to push him as well.

NOBODY during the draft

NOBODY during the draft would've even thought about Stephen Curry at the #2 pick.

They probably could've used Ricky Rubio, as he's a good fit for Memphis, but would Rubio have come to the U.S. to play in Memphis? I doubt it. He was too picky about where he wanted to play and all that, and with Memphis not being a high market team I don't think he would've wanted to play there. I was never high on Thabeet for obvious reasons, but other than Rubio I don't know who else would've been reasonable to pick.

I don't know how Tyreke Evans would play with Gay, Randolph, and Mayo seeing as he needs the ball alot to play effectively. Not sure that would've been an ideal fit.

James Harden would've been a wasted pick since they have Mayo on the team already.

Jonny Flynn, Jordan Hill, and Brandon Jennings weren't going to be picked that high at the time.

Well I got Steph as the best

Well I got Steph as the best choice because he's a shooter who can also create for others with reke he would've needed a point guard beside him cuz he's not that

thabet

i mean many people wouldnt have passed on thabeet last year. im pretty sure no one would have guessed he would have went to the d league during the season. also its hard 2 say varnado and the other guys are better prospects than him. i mean cmon a 7 foot 3 center who defends the paint like he did? alot of teams wouldhave grabbed him #2

Thabeet was a solid pick last

Thabeet was a solid pick last year for Memphis, the fact that they had Marc Gasol allowed them to take a 7'3'' player with a lot of upside and not force him to play big minutes right away, which may have impeaded his development. He got a lot of crap for going to the D-League, but he dominated and proved that he'd do more good as a shot blocking backup in Memphis. He put up around 6 pts 6 rbs and 1.6 blocks per in the last two months of the season and although he is still inconsistant, I look for him to have a much bigger impact next season. Hindsight is 20/20 but like a lot of posters said earlier, Curry was not considered by many as a top 5 pick and although he did have a great rookie season, it's safe to say the caliber of rookie year he had was quite a surprise.

Evans Should have been the Pick...

Period...Mayo and Evans would have made a nice back court...Zac should not be in their future plans..he's playing for a Contract...And With Thabeet and Gasol and the money saved on Zac they could grab a young big...
