Lil B to GSWParticipantI think that Westbrook has been in the league long enough where you dont need to compare him to another player. Comparisons are made so we can predict the type of player/career an ameture player would be at the nba level. Once you make an all-star team the only time there should be comparison talk is comparing others to him.

steviechillzParticipantno i would not. He is a combination of athleticism, toughness, and erratic play all into one. I have never seen that combination before. I will say that the closest comparison I can make his Steve Francis. Francis was only in the league for 9 years and had better handles then Westbrook, but their athleticism is simillar and i think Westbrook will last a lot more than 9 years in the league

SiggyParticipantI’m gonna throw this one out there and I’ll probably get negged due to the perceived difference in position, but he reminds me of Latrell Sprewell.

TheMOSTHATEDoneParticipantThe relentless attack tendency of Latrell in his early years, plus a bit of Francis could give a faint idea.
But he is not comparable with anyone i have seen, he is unique even in his flaws.

F_Sdoesn’t he have the same flaws as inversion? the passing, the need for the ball etc… and didn’t iverson loose his game without athleticism like y’all are predicting westbrook to loose his!
did steve francis have a deadly pull up mid range?… idk

he_gets_bucketsParticipantF_S, if you are so convinced Iverson and Westbrook are similar and are going to shoot people down when they disagree or make another comparison, what is the point of making a thread?

rileymcshea3ParticipantTo me he is a very unique guy that explosive pgs in the future will be compared to him.

JunkYardDogParticipantvery close to what Francis showed during his first years with Houston… maybe westbrook is tougher and mentally stronger than Francis.

Bird_YearsParticipantThis is too funny, I love how F_S put videos where they scored a similar amount of points together. Like having similar point totals in games makes them the same player

IndianaBasketballParticipantBoth Allen Iverson and Steve Francis were more dynamic off of the dribble than Russell Westbrook. Westbrook doesn’t waste time playing with the ball… He’s two or three dribbles and gone…
I don’t even think Iverson and Francis attacked the rim with such tenacity that Westbrook does.
Iverson and Francis were both great athletes, but I think Westbrook is a better athlete than both… Not only that, his body can withstand the punishment. He gives punishment more than he takes it.
There have been a lot of athletic guards, but I think Westbrook has his own style of play.
0- Posted on: Thu, 09/13/2012 - 6:13am #714009
JunkYardDogParticipant"He gives punishment more than he takes it." : yes… now… cause he’s still very young. Francis was punishing other players too when he was younger.
(agree with your statement about the way they play after the dribble)

thparadoxParticipantKevin Johnson is my comparison and I think it’s pretty good. Check out some highlights. KJ was really explosive like Westbrook.
0- Posted on: Thu, 09/13/2012 - 8:54am #714041
JunkYardDogParticipantKJ was a much better player than Westbrook… better overall IQ, better defensive IQ, less strength but absolutely no comparison about pg skills.
KJ was a very smart pg, with great passing skills. Westbrook doesn’t have the same skills at all, but he has better upper body strength.Very few point guard (and even other players) during the 90’s had the same physical / athletic attributes (especially strength).

Jar Of Funky CrumbsParticipantI have been saying this since I’ve joined, Westbrook IS what Francis SHOULD’VE been. Stevie Franchise was one of my favorite players and I hate how his prime was taken away from him by injuries. He made the game look so easy at 6’3 and was a highlight film waiting to happen EVERY game.

FastAndFuriousParticipantLMFAOOOOOOO
Did dude really try to compare Westbrook to Iverson?!
They are nothing alike, Westbrook is honestly something I’ve never seen at the PG position(Along with D.Rose), Steve Francis would probably be the closest but I don’t even think they play alike.
0- Posted on: Thu, 09/13/2012 - 5:57pm #714117
JoeyGladstoneParticipantComparing Westbrook to AI is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!
Steve Francis is probably the best comparison, but why should we compare Westbrook to anybody? He is an all star in this league & we should be comparing upcoming players/prospects to him now.
This thread is a JOKE!

That’s all I have to contribute to this discussion. Carry on!

IndianaBasketballParticipantThat comparison crossed my mind too in quite a few ways. The young Michael Jordan was thin, but undercover strong… He had a quick first step, ridiculous athleticism/explosiveness and was only a decent shooter… No real three-point range, so he lived in the mid-range. Played with an aggressive attitude and was just tenacious…But I didn’t post it because the young Jordan was just simply a better decision maker and more fundamentally sound/skilled at both ends, even as a young player. Obviously, playing three years under Dean Smith is the reason for that. He also just controlled his athletic gifts a lot better too. Westbrook can be so out of control still.Regardless… The comparison is better than Nbadraft.net comparing DeShawn Stevenson to Jordan lol.0 - Posted on: Mon, 04/21/2014 - 6:43pm #891782
EspressoprodigyParticipantAfter watching these last OKC games i couldn’t help but to bring this up.
i think the similarities between each other games are clearer now.
