Matthews is asking for $15 million a year? Worth it? I don’t think so.

I think he’s worth around 8 mil. He’s a good, but not great, defender, nice outside shooter, but just had a nasty injury.

$8-10 million/yr range at most….especially after the achilles injury

He’s an older player coming off injury, so how much money and how long of a contract is a team going to give him?  He’s still a very good player, but committing big money and big years to 28 yrold player is risky.

The one that gets me is Tristan Thompson.  Last year, he was an 8p/8r guy, is that what the NBA see’s as max contract player?  If the Cav’s put too much into him, they’re crazy!

i think a lot of yall are forgetting the tax jump.  That is why these players are asking for this money because with a lot of teams about to get a huge cap relief someone will overpay.  Also Tristan Thompson showed his value in the Finals so yeah he could probably get some team to get him close to the max.  Mathews may be asking for too much given his injuries and the wing position is deep in this draft.

Just to imagine if the NBA took a page from the NFL’s policy for Franchise Tagging players.

    He’s a good role player.

It’s amazing how over hyped guys are when they’re playing in the finals next to a great player.

I got so sick of hearing about Delly.  He is a marginal talent who plays really hard.  Put him on a non-playoff team and no-one knows who he is.

You see the same thing in NCAA tourney, guys play well and get way over hyped.

but I still think you are underselling TT. He is one of the best rebounders in the league and is THE BEST offensive rebounder in the NBA.

Cavs need him, Lebron, Kyrie and some shooters to win championships. If those shooters can be Love, Shump and JR great. If not, trade em and get new shooters. But to me, TT is untouchable in Cleveland.

I always have the feeling that for a lot of these above-average role players it is easy to get cheaper replacements. Every year it is possible to pick up cheap veterans that can give you almost the same production at a fraction of the cost. Put all your money in star players, try to acquire solid players in reasonable contracts and invest in players that might look defunct, but can actually contribute in a limited way.

He’ll turn 29 in Oct, is coming off of a torn Achilles, has never been an All-Star and averages just 16, 4 and 2. This man must be smoking that loud… There’s no way in hell he’s worth $15 million per season.

I think he’s a very good two way role player, but he’d be lucky to get $8-10 million per season. There’s no way I’d give him all guaranteed money either.

Mathews is a stallwart in Portland’s backcourt. He is a fantastic finisher on the break, excellent post ups of smaller guards in isolation, and a deadly shooter. He needs ball movement to catch and shoot. He doesn’t have many weaknesses, is unselfish, and his energy is contagious. If Klay Thompson is max, I think Mathews is close.

I put him around 7-8 mil a year, which is what Jodie Meeks got. I think if you are paying Wes Matthews that kind of money, your are in trouble. He was the No. 4 option on Portland and he’s fine at that. I don’t feel that is worth 15 mil a year.

He was the 3rd option not the 4th, but I with everything else that you said. I would rather spend money on Danny Green. $15m is to much and coming off an injury like that he won’t get it. That would be more than players like Rudy Gay who got 40/3 year extension.

Without Aldridge drawing extra defenders, and Lillard and Batum zipping passes around, Matthews could not score efficiently.  He is probably the weak link in their starting 5, and that is why they drafted a shooting guard last year and also traded for one at the deadline.

To put it another way, Wes wants Paul George money.  But George was hurt after signing the deal, but Wes is hurt now.  Plus the George injury, based on past NBA players, is easier to return from than what Matthews had.  The Wilkins brothers might be the best example of the achilles injury stopping players, and taking away some athletic ability.

It looks like Portland could be a team that could quickly implode, due to free agents, or it could keep everyone and add some help and be a contender.  I just don’t se how overpaying Matthews would help them.  $15million, that is crazy.
