IlladelphParticipantI was reading about the college recruiting class of 2016, and noticed that the focus is on Josh Jackson, Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum, etc. I’ve heard about these guys for years. But I read something this evening by Evan Daniels who thought that Wenyen Gabriel couuld legitimately in the conversation to be a top 5 player.
Now, I don’t know much about this kid which seems weird since he seems to have come out of nowhere. There are some youtube videos, and the kid looks like a baller. But is this kid for real? How does he not pop on anyone’s radar until this last summer? And if he is that good, how is he not on any of the mock drafts? He even is going to One-and-Done center of the universe university of kentucky, and he has no draft hype at all. Odd. Anyone know anything about this kid?

GBeeParticipantHe’s a kid who’s literally and figuratively a later bloomer. Before this past summer he didn’t have any D1 offers. He’s one of those late growing kids who was a former raw, mediocre wing who grew a ton late, sprouting from wing to PF height while retaining his coordination. His skill level is just ok. He’s more aggressive than he is skilled. Likes to shoot it and straight line drive even though he’s raw, but his stroke shows promise. I think his greatest qualities for a kid his size are his aggression and motor. He’s pretty relentless, but it can lead to reckless play and him attempting things that he really isn’t that good at. I think he’s a big project physically, mentally and skill-wise. He’s rail thin and currently he’s kind of a tweener. He could be a PF if he fills out, but the way he plays says that he wants to eventually be a SF.He’s come a long way in a short time so his rate of improvement is very good, but I still think he’s a project. I actually think his teammate and fellow incoming freshman frontcourt player Sasha Killeya-Jones will be the more immediate impact guy at UK because he’s more polished and has a more defined game.

UncledrewParticipantHe looks like a natural talent but more long than actually athletic. Still very raw at this point will need a couple years in college. Being 6’9 with a decent jumpshot, there will be continued talk of his potential. At the same time he has potential to get a gm fired if they take a chance to early in the first round and he doesn’t pan out.

evantomesParticipantGBee’s assessment is accurate. He finished with 24 points and ten rebounds last night, earning MVP. This was the first time I’ve seen him so it’s not fair to base it off of one game, but my opinion is he isn’t going to be in the 2017 draft, ofcourse a lot will happen from now until then. I don’t think he’s quite on par with the top 5 but he’s far from a finished product.
