Bird_YearsParticipantSomeone please explain to me how Lebron is either the most skilled or best leader? I’m willing to concede that he has improved tremedously in both categories but there are players out there who still dwarf him in both regards.
Most skilled: his passing for a big man is impressive but Dirk, Kobe and Chris Paul are easily more skilled than him
Best Leader: I’m assuming people gave him this becasue he finally discovered how to play in the Finals but one year doesn’t make up for all the years he’s let his team down. Maybe in a couple years he deserves this but right now this award has to go to either Tim Duncan or Garnett
0- Posted on: Thu, 08/09/2012 - 11:59am #704766
SubZeroParticipantChris Paul and Kobe were my first thoughts on most skilled, but I put Lebron solely because he can do everything. Based on fundamentals, I would easily put these 2 on the top of the list. But Lebron is just good at everything, so it’s kind of a subjective answer

F_Smost skilled: easy bro, there is nothing he cant do. first of all defensively, guards everyone on the floor, including post players. that is a skill. on offense, same story, what cant he do? his passing, and handling are outstanding, and reading defenses is a skill which he does excellent. what skill is he missing, what is he NOT good at?
leadership: he is a great vocal leader who stays on top of his players AT ALL TIMES. and actions speak louder than words, his extreme hustle plays as a superstar is inspiring to team mates. and lastly, he is a awesome team mate
0 - Posted on: Thu, 08/09/2012 - 8:28am #704701
Bird_YearsParticipantWell I’m bored at work so lets do this:
Defensively he is incredible but that is more to do with athleticism, hard work and size than skill
And yes he has point guard skills but he is still lacking a consistent mid range and post game
As for leadership, I do not believe a good leader flops nor has a history of giving up
But at the end of the day the argument isn’t over whether Lebron is good in these two categories (because he is), its about whether he is the best in the league in these two categories (which he isn’t)

F_Si think that because he is an athletic freak you are underestimating his skills.
his skill set is outstanding. his mid-range jumper is barely lacking consistency, he made defenses pay time and time again if they gave him space.
and his post game has IMPROVED a ton, last year mavs matched up jason kidd w/ lebron and lbj did nothing but try to use his quickness blow by him. this year, he took it personal, reading size disengage and taking to the block everyone he could
0 - Posted on: Thu, 08/09/2012 - 8:44am #704709
F_Sand i just thought about a counter argument on the defensive side
how does he rely on hard work and athleticism to be a great defender when he gets ONLY 1.5 fouls while being the best defender in the nba. if it was all athleticism that foul per game number would be much much higher

There are some incredible centers, but there are enough where you could get a solid one in the second round like a David Robinson, Patrick Ewing or even Dwight Howard, BUT there is only one Mike and there is only one Magic.

0- Posted on: Thu, 08/09/2012 - 3:51pm #704843
mikeyvthedonParticipantThat Kobe Bryant had incredibly few flaws as a basketball player. His skill set was incredible and his ability to carry teams far beyond where they should go is incredibly impressive to me. I understand that people seem to think that Magic and Kareem were better than Shaq and Kobe, I am not so sure they were. To me, Shaq and Kobe were the best duo of All-Time.
I truly believe those guys did just as much with a whole lot less. They carried a team with incredibly little to 3 straight NBA championships. Also, Kobe’s three straight finals appearances with Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum were pretty damn amazing. His skill set is incredible, he outworked everybody and he at times could be absolutely unstoppable. Up until a few seasons ago, I feel like he was the best player in the world.
Magic was a tremendous All-Around player and definitely a competitor, just always felt like he had incredible pieces around him. Undoubtedly he made his team much better, just feel Kobe has been a monster over a longer period of time. His winning one MVP award is ridiculous to me and I feel he was a better defender than Magic, as well as having that incredible offensive skill set that made many believe him to be one of the more clutch players of All-Time.
Kareem of course had incredible longevity with NBA records (scoring, MVP’s, among others). He was an absolute monster, was the leagues top player or close to it for years upon years. The thing is, I feel like others could have indeed stacked up to him in his prime. I think Shaq could indeed give Kareem fits and the thing that stands out to me is rebounding. Despite Kareem having strong career numbers, I feel like they are inflated a tad and that the other players considered top 5 centers (Wilt, Russell, Shaq and Hakeem) were much better rebounders.
Rebounding % is a pretty cool stat and I think that Kareem was not the rebounder people seem to think he was, at least amongst his peers. His rebounding % is 68th All-Time, as compared to Shaq’s being 20th and Hakeem’s being 29th. It was not kept his rookie season, though I doubt it would make much difference, maybe push him a tad higher. Still, this is the % of rebounds one could grab when on the floor, kind of puts things on equal footing in terms of board crashers.
So you ask, how do I know Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were better? I guess I do not have absolute definitive proof of Russell, though with 11 rings and being the consummate winner in pro sports, do not think I need much. Just know that Bill was such an incredible defender, rebounder and leader that I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt over pretty much anyone past my first three players, Michael, Shaq and Kobe. Wilt, that is another story.
When Kareem came into the league at 22, Wilt was 33. He was injured for about all of Kareem’s rookie season, than led the league in rebounding the next 3. His rebounding % better than Kareem’s, his still being an utter beast well in check. People knock Wilt for "only" winning two championships, but forget he was maybe on two of the best teams in NBA history for those championships. Just was around at a pretty unfortunate time as far as incredibly stacked teams. Well, just my thoughts on the situation. It is an opinion, could be subject to change. If one disagrees with it, that is fine, would appreciate arguments against. Realize it is not necessarily popular, just how I feel. Was told by someone I did not respect others opinions. Think that is not true, people do not have to respect mine, just kind of feel like I at the very least provide some evidence and a view point to give people a window into why it exists.

PAIDUDUParticipantThere are so many factors tugging the importance of what happened on Tuesday in either direction. Yes, Love, Roy and Kirilenko combined for 56 points. But it was against an inferior opponent, hardly an NBA-caliber squad. (Scale tips in one direction.) But Maccabi Bazan Haifa nearly beat Golden State last week. (Scale tips a bit back in the other.) And this was the first time the first-team offense seemed to hit a rhythm. (Tips a bit further.)
