European BasketballerParticipantI want to give update here on Greek player Vassilis Toliopoulos that I have talked about here a couple times before.
He is now 19 and he has just sign a 4 year contract with big Greek Euroleague club Olympiacos.
He is 6-3 tall and he can play in both guard positions, but he is used mainly as a point guard. But he is an American style point guard, not a European one, as he is a score first and shoot first point guard, and plays more in a shooting guard style as almost all American point guards do, but not how point guards in Europe normally do.
Anyway, he played very good at FIBA Under-19 championship this summer and I think if he continues to improve then I am right about him that I mentioned him here before a couple of times as good prospect to watch for possible NBA in future. I think first time mentioned him here was when he was 16.
At level he is at now he is definite player to watch. If he can improve a little bit more, then he should be drafted. But of course there is NBA bias against Greek players.
Here he is in YouTube playing at this summer’s Under-19 World Championship:

Rip255Why do these young Euro’s sign 4 year contracts with expensive buy-outs if they’re a good chance of making the NBA?
Would it not be wise to sign 1 season at a time and then declare for the draft when they’re ready?
Am I wrong, but doesn’t this mean he’ll be going to the NBA on the rookie salary when he’s 23-26, thus minimising his earning potential?

European BasketballerParticipantIf Americans could get paid to play in NCAA would they not do it? The buyouts are not expensive at all for pro clubs. It is only the NBA teams refusing to pay them makes them "expensive". European teams pay these "expensive" buyouts all the time. It’s just something about the NBA and NCAA and how they do their business.

Rip255I hear what you’re saying and don’t have any issue with staying in Europe to get paid…but the cost of the buy-out falls on the player if he breaks the contract and goes to the NBA. I remember Ricky Rubio’s was 6million. That’s more than most Rookies earn over their first 3 years.
However if he signed a 1 year contract in Europe, he could avoid the buy-out, go to the NBA and get his rookie salary out of the way by the time he’s 23 and ready for his first big contract.
Instead, he’ll be earning a low salary in Europe (by NBA standards) until he’s 23, then coming to America and then starting on a Rookie Scale until he’s 26.

King CaluchaParticipantI don’t think there’s a problem with the way things are ruled at the moment. It is OK for European clubs to put expensive buyouts to protect their players and it’s OK for the NBA count buyouts against the salary cap (at least for certain quantities).
I do believe it’s good for european leagues to have great players too.

elliotmcadooParticipantRead about this kid a few years ago and have only been even more impressed from that video against US competition. Solid handles and NBA range on his jumper. Sucks he signed a four year contract over seas which prevents us from being able to see what he can do in the league. Bright future in my opinion.

European BasketballerParticipantAnyway, he has made the senior team of the big Euroleague club Olympiacos. He has been there 15th man this year. But still, it is very hard for a player his age (he is like a NCAA college sophomore) just to make a big Euroleague team and to be playing in practice with the first team every day.
Here is a new video of him in Youtube:

He should be drafted.

European BasketballerParticipantToliopoulos is now in his auto draft year. So he will be in 2018 NBA draft.
He is 6-2 190 point guard. He plays now in EuroLeague and Greek League with Olympiacos.
Here is some new Youtube of him:
