A few days before the draft, some concern arose that Jonas Valanciunas, the big Lithuanian center the Raptorsselected fifth, was going to have some major buyout issues.

As a result, there was some speculation that Valanciunas could slip down in the lottery. He didn’t and I guess it was because the buyout thing wasn’t that big of a deal.

Raptor general manager Bryan Colangelo told the Toronto Sun that the buyout has been resolved with Valanciunas’ team Lietuvos Ryta. Valanciunas’ deal was for three years with his Euro team.

"I can confirm the buyout is in place," Colangelo said.

The Raptors can contribute up to $500,000 of the $2.4 million buyout under the terms of the current collective bargaining agreement.

Now that Valanciunas will join the Raptors alongside Andrea Bargnani, Toronto will get a fresh look at its new front line. Valanciunas isn’t ready to be an impact player though as he needs to add strength, which he admitted draft night. "I have, no so strong body," he said. So that’ll likely be the focus for the young 19-year-old center. Some have said he’s a young Pau Gasol and if that’s the case, Toronto will likely be fine waiting however long for him to add strength.

If the raptors can bring him in in 2012 with another top draft pick next year, then their franchise will suddenly have a bright future with: Bayless, Derozan, Ed Davis, Amir Johnson, Bargnani, Valanciunas and hopefully a sharp shooting SF as they can’t shoot from outside as a team to save their lives.

i think he is a better prospect then Thristen Thompson….he is younger more lenth and height   + beter shooter + played against better compititon (played well)……apprently takes 200 free throws after every preactice (shows dedication)

I think Cavs would have picked him if there was no issue with the buyout….i will go as far as to saying maybe even the wolves – not saying he is better then Kanter (although some euro anylist think so) he is just a better fit for the t-wolves as he is a true center

just a question i know this means that…. he can offcially come next year but does this also mean there is no possibility of him coming next year (or could that still happen)

From watching the BC interviews it didnt seem like he is coming next year but watching jonases interview he made it sound like he is coming next year (this is after he got drafted so its not increase his stock)…..i guess valanciunas can pay out of his own pocket which i wonder if he will do??

I did some year to year research on Valanciunas and saw he is a great worker. He really develops quick. How hs body develops is yet to be seen, but in 2008/2009 he shot 64% from the stripe. He finished this year a shade under 90% at the line in Euroleague play. As far as the jumpshooting technique, I think it is all there he just hasnt displayed it yet. I also believe he post skills are there but he needs muscle to be able to fully function down low. The only reason Im not so high on Valanciunas is the fact that I do not believe he can gain 35 pounds so easily, and even if he does his body frame is still lean, and he will still be pushed around.

The fact that he is not coming to Toronto until 2012 is probally the best part of this whole situation. So many players are rushed into the NBA and dont get time to develop. Playing one more year in Europe, probally with an increased role, and ncreased minutes will help Valanciunas get ready for the physicality and mental speed of this league. He will need to cut down on the innappropriate turnovers, and fouls, part of that is no doubt due to his inexperience, and his strength but much is still on him to get better.

Toronto will also be given a chance to possess another high pick in next years draft, although  I think Casey may just shock some people with this team.Toronto should get a Top 10 Pick next year. Next years draft is LOADED with lottery pick SF talent. Even if the Raptors select 10th they should have a very capable SF on board for the future. Harrison Barnes, Quincy Miller, Perry Jones, James Mcadoo, Micheal Gilchrist, Terrence Jones, Kris Joseph, Khris Middleton, CJ Leslie, Terrence Ross, and Adonis Thomas all seem like lottery talent from this stage.

if it just $2.4 million buyout i don’t understand why he doesn’t come this year to Raptors.

The Raptors can contribute $500,000 and Valanciunas could complete the rest from his rookie year salary which is very high, like $4 million… i’m pretty sure it will be worthwhile for him also money wise as his correct salary in Lithuania probably be very low plus it will give him one more year of NBA salary!
