Utah v. Charlotte (Summer League)
Sherron Collins- Didn’t run the offense the best really, but he made 1 pass and cut pretty smoothly into the play. He’s limited by his lack of size (and fatness), and couldn’t use his low center of gravity to his advantage very much against Sundiata Gaines, who has the same kind of build . Shot the ball pretty well. He did pressure the ball very well, turning his man multiple times, often before they reached mid-court. He needs to lose weight though, he’s noticeably not as explosive as he used to be.
Gerald Henderson- EASILY the best athlete on the floor in this game. Made a great dunk on a straight-line drive early in the game, and then caught an errant alley-oop and laid it in after hanging in the air for hours seemingly. Still lacks confidence in his shot, and isn’t much of a ball-handler. The only way he can get slashing lanes is if his man falls for his pump fake (he pump fakes on every ball-rotation that comes to him). If his man doesn’t go for the fakes, he forces the issue and usually makes a bad decision. Mediocre on D. Needs more confidence in his shot to be a better scorer though, especially since he can’t really create his own shots alot. He plays more like a SF than a SG, which is weird since he’s like 6’4 lol.
Derrick Brown- Athletic and long, Brown has a raw skill level. Played great D on Gordon Hayward, and clearly bothered him with his length and decent strength. Not a scorer at all really, and has an inconsistent shot and very mediocre handles. Can slash to the rim a little. A pretty aggressive rebounder, even though he has little fundamentals. Very reliant on his physical and athletic ability.
Alexis Ajinca- Very long arms, and has gotten a good deal bigger than I remember him being. Not quite a pure talent offensively, but will crash offensively and get stick backs. Also has a pretty soft on his shots and has a surprising face-up game (well, to me at least). Nice defensive presence with his length, but still needs to get stronger, especially in the lower body.
Denis Clemente- Clemente! He struggled with the pace of the game a little and didn’t really make too many plays. Still has the same breath-taking speed and quickness, but he lacked aggression, which is weird because that’s usually one of his calling cards. C’mon Denis!
Shawne Williams- Still physically gifted with a nice shot. Still shaky on D and still needs to improve his court demeanor
Jerel McNeal- Remember him from Marquette? Well, I’ll be damned if he made the team lol. Really struggled at everything out there, but he did try hard on D. Ball-handling is VERY weak for a guy trying to play PG.
Jeremy Pargo- Looked good running the offense today, but he’s never been consistent. Has great athletic ability and speed too. Can’t really shoot well. Not going to be confused with a good defender.
Gordon Hayward- Struggled quite a bit. Derrick Brown’s length and strength gave him HUGE problems. Although he moves very well without the ball, Brown sometimes jammed him up so bad that he couldn’t even get to the screens to free himself up. His ball-handling (strangely?) looked EXTREMELY shaky too, being stripped quite a few times, and getting called for traveling once. Wasn’t much of a factor on D, but was pretty aggressive on the glass. Really struggled to get his shot off today, but did get to the line a little, and knocked down his free throws. Needs to get stronger.
Sundiata Gaines- Ran the offense reasonably well. Never been a very good shooter, but is a strong and aggressive slasher to the rim. Can make plays in the drive and dish a little. A little shaky as a pure playmaker, and looks for his shot 1st and foremost. Your classic overachiever. Gets after his man on D (was on Jerel McNeal like white on rice for damn sure). Perfect 3rd PG for a team.
Kosta Koufas- He sucks to be honest. But he did rebound reasonably well. Missed all of his jump shots when I watched, can’t put the ball on the floor, lacks athleticism and quickness, and doesn’t like to bang down low for shots. Iffy hands. What can he defend? At best, he’s a 3rd C right now. Looked poor this game, I must say.
Tyrese Rice: Utah wasn’t very good on either end when he was in the game. Had no court presence and ran the offense poorly. Not sure if he’s a combo guard or a PG, and I’m not sure that HE even knows. Hope he comes out better next game, because he was terrible this time and he already is a longshot.
Ohio State Bigs = Overrated, all of them should have stayed in college to develop.
Im drafting Gerald Henderson on my Fantasy Team. Heès got like 3 dunks already. Did you see that crazy acrobatic play?Duke alumni tearing it up in the Summer League.
Great game! Yada almost had that one!
Hope all the games are as fun as this!
Hayward did very well in my opinion. He didn't get very many touches on the offensive end, but he made the best of it when he did ge the ball and he played very good defense. Very solid performence from Hayward it took a couple minutes for him to get used to the game, but after that he did very good. Hayward did the right thing by passing it to a wide open Gaines, I am not sure how good of a look that would have been if he would have took the shot. Overall good and exciting game from both teams.
This was a great game.
I thought Hayward made the right play giving the ball to Gaines too. Gaines usually delivers in crunch time, and Hayward made a few smart plays in this game. He was limited a good deal though in what he contributed in half-court plays though.
I agree with you. He could've been more aggessive and called for the ball, but I thought he did well. He's gotten a little stronger, but still has a long way to go.
I would have liked to see Hayward get a few more shots. He didn't even shoot one three. That's not good for somebody who is supposed to replace Kyle Korver...
Still, a good showing for Hayward. He could really help Utah next year.
Gaines is an NBA PG.
