Can someone please tell me why Utah hasn’t made a run at oj mayo? The jazz obviously need help at shooting guard as all they have is Alec Burks and Kevin Murphy. Oj mayo would be a great fit as he is a excellent shooter, defender, and can play point at times. I think they should offer mayo a 4 year/34 million dollar deal which is more than fair because Alec Burks just isn’t ready to step in than start he’s a sixth man right now and Kevin Murphy just can’t separate from his man to score in the summer league

If I was Utah I would only lay out that money for a franchise PG. They Jazz are in a perfect position to contend for another playoff berth while their young guys get one more year to mature without big responsibility. We don’t know what Hayward, Favors, Kanter and Burks are capable of yet and they’re the only four players the Jazz have under contract beyond this season, all team options. Mayo isn’t their long-term answer at the point; I wouldn’t commit $9M/year to another young guy while they have four hugely promising young players with fixed positions and need more time to grow.

And I disagree about Burks, he came into the league an NBA-ready scorer and the only facet of his game in which he really needed improvement, his jumper, has come along way and even as a rookie he was a prolific scorer when he played. I think he’s worthy of a sixth man role right now.

I agree Burks is a sixth man right now but the jazz still need backcourt depth they should try to see what they can get for Jefferson, millsap, lanter, or favors. Oj mayo is a legitimate scorer as he showed that his first 2 years in the league and hes a tough defender and a good sixth man. I don’t understand why people neg me for asking why the jazz don’t make a run at mayo

If they have the money, would Deron Williams consider coming back if the Nets new team doesn’t work out? It’s not hard to tell they’re only gonna get better and better, they’ve got a lot of great young talent and I think he should consider it

The Jazz have pretty strong players at every position now besides the 1.  (1) Mo Williams, (2) Gordan Hayward, (3) Marvin Williams, (4) Derrick Favors, (5) Al Jefferson.  They then have Burks as the backup 2 and Murphy/Demarre can both also fill in at 2 or 3.

That said, I really like Mayo and I’d be happy if Utah picked him up for a reasonable price.  Unfortunately, I don’t think think Mayo is interested in being picked up for a reasonable price and I don’t think he’s a franchise-level player.  Since the Jazz don’t have a particular hole at his position, going after him doesn’t make a ton of sense to me.

The next move the Jazz need to make is to sign or develop a better pg.

Extactly, Hayward proved to us last year that he is more adept at playing as a 2 guard instead of a 3. He can certainly play both positions but he is better at a 2 instead of a 3 which is what he was drafted as.

Burks has also proved through the summer league that he is a sure fire scorer. He has been the leading scorer in all but one of the Jazz’s 4 summer league games. All of which has been wins. His averages for the summer league so far are: 19.5pts, 3.5boards, 1.5 assists, 0.75 steals. Most recently, in game 4 on thursday Burks exploded for 22 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, and 2 steals. So he will at least be a sixth man for the Jazz this year, and should in the future start as well. (He could even start this next season but I doubt it) This dominance proves that an addition of Mayo isn’t really necessary. Adding him would just create less playing time for Burks. He already experienced that this last season so why create it for him again when he has dominated in the summer league? Mayo is also not really a team player as his assist totals have dropped as of late, yet the Jazz seem to really like team oriented players.

I was of the opinion that the jazz move up in this years trade to snag both a pg and a young wing, but as that obviosly didn’t happen, i think the only other choice is to look ahead to next years. Because honestly Moe’s not the answer and the jazz will never be the favorite for a star free agent point guard. Same goes for a wing. So really the only way they can get better at those positions is through trades or drafts. So they should try then, to position themselves into next years draft, the only way they can, by trading their current assets into picks. So if the jazz do trade jefferson or milsap, i think draft picks is what they should recieve in return.

the jazz only have a mid-level exeption to offer a free agent.  I don’t think O.J. MAYO would accept a 5 million dollar contract.

Honestly I’d like to see the Jazz go in a complete rebuild, I’d really love to see Kanter and Favors starting together and you most definitely would get a great haul of assets and future picks if you traded Jefferson and Milsap both on expirings and both high level players. I think with Burks, Hayward, Kanter, and Favors you have a great young core already and the assets you could add by trading the two mentioned players would continue the growht, but after acquiring Mo Williams and Marvin Williams it doesn’t appear they are pointed in that direction.

I completely agree I think that would be a better than picking up veterans and barely getting into the playoffs.

Mo illiams is more of a 6th man, a scorer. Mo is no starting PG. The Jazz are very inneed of a pg, Earl Watson. N Jamal Tinsley are the backups. Al Jefferson trade for a decent staring PG in this league.

Trade him for what? To be bounced in the first round again? Devin was a decent pg, look what happened. No, the jazz need to get their players in the draft. Or make some sort of brilliant trade that doesn’t dismantle their young core. But how likely is that. Nope, they should go after shabazz and a young pg in next years draft.

That mayo is going to make them a contender? I liked Mayo in college and rooted for him when he came into the league, but they guy was tragically over hyped coming out of  HS, he is more of a 6th man than a starting SG, he doesn’t really pass that well and he cant get to the FT line. So you are left with a decent (not great) shooting and very athletic, but undersized 2, who doesn’t utilize his athleticism to the max. Meanwhile, you have about $17m invested in two lottery picks at the same position and you have at least one more year before you have to make a serious roster decision as a GM. These are all great reasons to not make a move if you are a GM.

Personally, I think that there  is so much top level athletic talent coming into the league right now that where teams can really play moneyball is in young player development. It seems to me that most teams do not know how to develop young players, but that problem could be solved with the gamut of former players who want to be assistant coaches. Signing a guy like mayo means you are taking ~30 mins a game from Burks and Hayward. While neither of these players have shown stellar improvement, both have shown improvement which is very positive. You can’t play the free agent game when you are in UTAH because it is UTAH (not trying to offend any residents and I am sorry if I have ) and you are going to have to overpay to get people over there(like Boozer, though that worked out for them), instead you have to make the best of the talent and assets you have and turn them into the players that other teams want to overpay and give up other assets for. You can’t do that If you cannibalize their development with shortsighted FA signings.

That’s exactly how I see it. And honestly that situation you described is what’s happening with Favors being behind Milsap and Jefferson. His potential is chained right now, and if it’s ever going to expload he’ll have to be the starter, win or lose, he needs to learn what it’s like to be the top dog.

But, at times I think he actually defers too much. But I guess that’s just a rookie’s confidence. But what scares me about Burks though, is his handles actually. I don’t know why but it just makes me nervous watching him drible. And I’m not sure he has a true crossover? Maybe he doesn’t use it that much, or maybe i’m just blind. But I do like Burks alot. Getting fouls is a gift.

I don’t think the Jazz can afford him can they?  And they are not known as a team that goes over the cap
