I’m sure we’ve all seen that video of the U19 Team USA guy shooting underhanded free throws, ala legend Rick Barry.

I know it looks totally uncool, but does anyone think that this could possibly be the answer to ending the hack-a-shaq strategy?

Surely it’s not a coincidence that the only player ever to do it also led the league in FT% seven times.

What if guys like DeAndre Jordan, Clint Capella and Andre Drummond also started practicing them. These guys would only need to make 60% and they’d effectively end the Hack-A-Strategy.

I honestly think it could be a revolution for big-men, because the hack-a-strategy isn’t going away and the NBA won’t change the rules for 4 or 5 players.

What would be the harm in DeAndre Jordan practicing 100 per day over the summar and keeping track of his %’s.

     Thoughts?

It absolutely could be the answer…. IF players can throw away their ego and use a shooting form that is "out dated" and "embarrising."

The biggest problem with post players is that their hands are so big and their are so tall the shooting angle is slimmer. By putting your hands on the sides of the ball that helps with the first point and shooting underhand will give them a release point that is compairble to a HS guards, which means more room for arc and a soft touch,

I hope this catches on with the really poor FT shooters.

I just realized, Rick Barry probably would have been a 90-95% FT shooter if he shot regular.

He’s actually probably such a good ft shooter that he can showboat granny style and know they’re going in any way he shoots them.

Wilt tried it at one point and it didn’t really make a difference for him.

I went to a camp when I was a teenager that was run by Dick Parfitt, who was the Central Michigan coach.  He could sit there all day long and swish one underhand freee throw after another. He actually had range with the Granny Shot.

I do think more people should give it a rip, though.  There is a Rick Barry instructional video where he explains why he felt less likely to "choke" by using the underhand technique.

Nobody knows if it’s really true, but you always read reports that guys like Dwight and DeAndre shoot 70+ % in practice, but just can’t get out of their own head when it comes to game situations.  If that’s the case, the underhand thing probably wouldn’t help.

It’s definitely not too hard if you practice it though.  I used to practice my free throws the normal way and underhand back when I played in college, and I found that I shot about 85% the normal way and 75% underhand.

I also practiced some where I’d just throw it like a chest pass and try to bank it in and shot about 60% doing it that way lol.

Personally I’m more efficient shooting underhand on free throws by about +10%, but then again I’m Muggsy Bogues size.
