UNC vs IU thread
Its ugly right now...
Zeller is as fast as 7 footer as I can remember
Since Tyler? LoL
Everybody from UNC looks lost right now, but are somehow staying in the game. And I can't decide if McCadoo is playing scared or nervous right now. He's fumbling the ball around and 2nd guessing hisself alot tonight, kind of like he did at the beggining of his Freshman year. Hopefully he will snap out of it and start playing like the beast he is.
@ IU... feed Zeller already, god damn
IDK if he is a beast like everyone thinks.. I mean, he has shown flashes, but has never been consistant.. What is he good at?? He doesnt, or hasnt so far, box out well, doenst have a jumper, and really isnt much more than an athlete..
I have been more impressed with the 6'10 center and the freshman they bring off the bench..
Keep in mind that I havent seen MaCadoo much...
I'm pretty sure no one on this site think he deserves to go #1, some have already dropped him out of their top 5.
Problem with Zeller is that he doesnt have a suerstar ceiling imo. I will still keep him in my top 5 because a team should take him high not because of potential (such as guys like Shabazz and Noel) but because he already has a great NBA-ready skill set.
Umm... IMO, it depends on the team.. The Wizards should take him with the nubmer 1.. If you are looking for a great player, then yes take him.. If you are trying to hit a home run, the look else where.. He isnt going to be the best player in the NBA.. He is Lamarcus Aldridge, not Blake Griffin.. And im not talking about thier play style.. Griffin could end up being the best PF in the NBA and Aldridge will not ever be that.. However, both guys change the direction of your program.. He will be solid and he will be very very good but not the best player on your team unless you are having a down year..
JMM is a pretty good rebounder for his size and has definitely expanded his mid-range game so far this year.
If he plays consistantly with the type of motor that Hansboro did I could see him easily averaging 20 and 10, but sometimes I see him take plays off on both sides of the ball and not hustle which makes me question if he has the heart to be a sure fire top 5 pick like many people have him pegged to be.
Wow.. You're asking alot of him.. Who plays with Hansborough's motor?? That is super rare.. Imagine what Anthony Randolph would be if he had that type of drive...
I like Oladipo too, he can jump out the gym and plays great D. He could eventually be a solid role player in the league as a defensive stopper and energy player off the bench
This Hulls guy can really pass.
Indiana plays great basketball.. They run when they can and they go the half-court sets when they cant.. For a basketball purist, it is very fun to watch..
is it me or is it everytime u give roy williams a young team.. they cant seem to pull it all together? i know there on the road but damn dude... carolina still has good players.....
I may get killed for this but IMO, Williams and Coach K are both average to below average skill developers... They both seem to be able to convice player to stay 2 or 3 years, which has always helped their careers but IMO, guys dont get a whole lot better under their watch..
There are always exceptions that Im sure people will throw in my face, but thats my opinion..
Both are great coaches however, not taking that away from them.. They win the chess match of the game most nights..
Coach K is a much better skills and X's and O's coach.
Roy gets his players to play athletically and fast, but he was never that good of a teacher.
As for guys staying 3-4 years, those are usually the kind of guys that Coach K recruits. He makes players earn their keep as well instead of guaranteeing them roles and minutes like some other coaches do.
Coack K is the superior X and O coach but you cant say that Williams is a bad teacher. He runs a solid system that puts his players in good spots.. Maybe not this game but i in years past, he has alwasy put players in spots to succeed, to an extent.. They will succeed to the limits of the system.. I think he holds his players back a bit but he is a good coach..
Also, Coach K does recruit players that are going to stay a while but even when they have immediate success, he convinces them to stay. The younger Plumlee could have left, but he stayed. Redick coud have left, but he stayed. Singler could have left, but he stayed. And those arent the only players.. Just a few I could think of..
BTW, Im not trying to start a arguement. When a single person stands against Duke or UNC, they get destroyed by the mob of fans...
I really don't think he's a good teacher. His system is a lot like Calipari's: acquire top shelf talent and try to run teams out of the gym by "out-talenting" and "out-athleticisizing" the opposition. Slow it down in the halfcourt or score enough for them to take the ball out of the basket and they'll likely struggle.
I also disagree that he holds his team back. He gives them freedom and let's them go, just as long as they play hard and fast.
BTW, I'm not a fan of either team. I'm a Big 10 guy.
I agree with you, he definitely lets his players go. also, Calipari is a better coach I think for the simple fact on how he stresses defense. (and I dont think Calipari is one of the very best coaches....he is good though) UNC plays really bad defense a lot of times. this is why they get beat by good margins.
back on the topic of letting his players go....yeah, I know he is not Dean, but Dean would rarely let a freshman start. He humbled his recruits. Everyone thought JR Reid was going to start immediately...nope. Kenny Anderson wanted free reign of the team and Dean said "we know a little about basketball too you know". Point being, Larry Drew's parents had already forewarned Roy they would leave the team if he sat him on the bench. This is the reason why Roy struggled by keeping him in the lineup so long. I dont have a problem with Paige starting, but he needs to learn the game and focus more on setting up the shooters instead of forcing up shots like he is doing. Being a disciplinarian has never been one of Roy's strong points.
Singler, Redick, and Plumlee (before this year) weren't in the same stratosphere of the prospects that Roy has made stay multiple years.
Ever since the one and done era 60% of the Top 5 players that stayed an extra year were Carolina players. To make it even worse in the last decade 5 out of 7 of the Top 5 players that stayed till their junior years were Carolina players.
Kyle Singler was the only top 10 player that stayed till an upperclassman for Duke and you wouldn't blame him. A slow white small forward who's not particularly athletic isn't really going to be turning many NBA heads.
The real one and dones that Coach K has gotten in the past couple years have actually gone one and done. I have no idea why you are comparing Duke and UNC in this aspect.
By rivals ranking, Kyle Singler #5 in the country and Mason Plumlee was a Mcdonald's All-American and even in the dunk contest. JJ Redick was a bigtime recruit as well. Seriously though who's the best 4 year tar heel recruit under Roy Williams
This ^^^^
HS rankings does not = ranking as NBA prospects
Probably Tyler Hansbrough.
Lol I pointed out Kyle Singler as well if you read my post...meanwhile Carolina has 7 of the 12 players in the Top 5 from the last ten years that stayed for more than one year.
There is a BIG difference between a McDonald's All American and a legit NBA prospect. I'm surprised you can't differentiate between the two.
JJ Redick was ranked 11th and was a 6'4 170 pound white kid who could only shoot the three. Really man?
Mason Plumlee was ranked 18th. Just because he was in the dunk contest that makes him a lock to go one and done?
Duke just doesn't get many legit NBA recruits. We don't get the Nerlens Noels we get the Amile Jeffersons. They're both McDonald's All Americans but in your head you think Amile should be one and done as well?
In the last ten years I'd say Duke has gotten maybe 4 off the top of my head that were ranked in the Top 5 and only two looked like legit NBA players. And guess what...they went one and done.
Meanwhile Carolina raked in close to 10 Top 5 recruits in that same time frame. Yet those Top 5 recruits keep on staying and recruits are beginning to take notice trust me.
As a side note...in Coach K's tenure I'd say he has maybe gotten 4 recruits that everyone knew were going to kill it in the league while they were in high school. Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Jay Williams, and Kyrie Irving. Three out of four of those went on to win their ROY.
Most big time NBA prospects just don't want to come to Duke, why would they? If they are pretty much guaranteed a lucrative NBA contract in one year why go to one of the most academically rigorous institutions in the world? And actually be forced to go to class. I wouldn't lol.
Coach K has thrived on getting those players that are on the fringe of being big time NBA prospects but need 3-4 years to show their potential.
Like I said, I dont like to argue wth Duke or UNC fans because of a few reasons:
1. There are soo many of you all that even if I am right about something, your stregnth in numbers will prove me wrong..
2. Im a WVU fan and that is the only team that I follow with a bit of obsession.. Therefore, I dont know much about the 2 schools in depth details. If you will notice, I simply agreed with someone who seemed to know what was up..
3. You guys take opinions to heart.. You know that your hated because of your success so anytime someone has an opinion that is less than flattering, you shout "Hater."
Not saying you did any of this.. Just giving reasons why I dont argue.. I can already see that your getting a little defensive.
I can definitely understand where you are coming from. Duke and UNC fans are generally rabidly passionate about their programs so anything bad said about them will take a little heat.
I like to think of myself as having an objective opinion but even then I notice I sometimes show my royal-blue tinted glasses. My apologies.
LoL..
Anyone wanna guard Hulls?? Kid is 5'10 and shoots off his shoudler yet he is killing UNC.. Granted he is a great shooter and is playing off his teammates. Ugly shot but he is extreemly confident and does not heistate.. You can tell he has put alot of hours into that shot.
You can't convince me that Roy Williams is anything more than a mediocre in game coach. He hasn't made any adjustments and is using his timeouts horribly.
The only thing this guy can do is recruit and that department is lacking in this class and next year's class. I hope people understand that he can't have a great team without 3 Top 10 recruits on his team. Go and look at the rosters of all his final four teams.
When he doesn't have significantly more talent than everyone else things like his 2010 NIT team happens. I don't think they go to the NIT this year because Marcus Paige is light years better than Larry Turnover Drew but I don't see them being very highly ranked at all this year.
Roy is not even mediocre. I knew Butler would give them problems and I knew they stood no chance against Indiana. I have said it here before. It should be evident that Roy is overrated. What should be coming clear to people now is, that he is borderline senile. This is frustrating as a life-long UNC fan.
Not to take anything away from Indiana, good team, but I never thought for one minute they would beat IU, especially after seeing them struggle against LBSU. Once they lost to Butler that was it.
He has bad lineups. (Dexter Strickland should not be at the 2, and he never wants to play two good shooting wings at the same time. Rarely played Barnes and Bullock together until forced to due to injury)
He has no defense.
Probably the worst thing about him though is, he has no half court offense what to speak of. No movement, no plays, its rare to even see any screens. Reggie Bullock's career is going down the the drain. PJ's is right behind him.
A good recruiter? Anyone can get players to come to UNC and like you said he is lacking in that department this year.
People are blinded by the 2 national titles. What has Roy ever done without having at least 4 or 5 NBA players on his squads?
@surve I can talk basketball with you. Nobody else listens when I say they are blinded by the 2 national titles. What can roy do without an NBA team...absolutely nothing.

Should be a fun game to watch with a bunch of athletes. Who ya got winning? Me personally I have UNC pulling off the upset.
