Im no expert scout but this is my opionion on Lyles from what Ive watched and read. Trey Lyles is a very interesting prospect to say the least. Standing 6’8/6’9 205/210 with an above average frame Trey is an extremely skilled PF with a great feel and understanding for the game. Even with all the post and perimeter skills Lyles best attributes maybe rebounding. Although he is a very fluid and coordinated player for his size he is not extremely explosive which could be fixed by adding more muscle weight. Sort of reminds me of Carlos Boozer with added perimeter skills and about 40 pounds less muscle. Defensively is where Trey needs to improve to become a truely elite prospect, along with adding strength. I honestly believe that if he does not recommit to Indiana it could Jbe a mistake. Indiana has shown recently with Zeller and Watford especially that they can really develop big men with all the essiential tools to be pros. Tom Crean would have taken good care of Lyles.

I think his mediocre athleticism and build knock him down a peg as an NBA prospect, but he’s certainly skilled and has an advanced game for a kid his age so he’ll probably still make it, but maybe just as a back up big.  I personally think he’s a better college prospect than a pro one.

Only saw him at the Adidas Nations game but was underwhelmed given his high ranking.  It’s all well and good that he’s a PF who can dribble but he didn’t do much with that skill.  He was smooth but lacked ideal size and athleticism.  My biggest turnoff was that he was so insistent on showing off his dribbling.  He basically never threw an outlet after securing a rebound, deciding instead to dribble the ball up the court.  If he can use that to his advantage like Odom can, more power to him but his mid-pace dribbling was non-threathing.  It was worse actually because he wouldn’t pass the ball up ahead to wide open guys.

That’s typical of players who’s size projects to be in b/t positions, especially tweener forwards. They tend to try to show facets of their game that they are working on but aren’t particularly proficient at and they end up looking bad while doing so. IMO, they do it so they look more "versatile" as opposed to "undersized."

I think Trey’s best bet to maximize his potential is to keep expanding his range so that he can make it as skilled 4 who can play in space, even on the perimeter. Heck, look at Tobias Harris who also started off as an undersized, skilled 4.  He’s improved his perimeter skills and transformed his body to the point where he’s a legit SF.

He’s legit, he was more impressive than Andrew Wiggins on the Canadian Junior National team at the U18 FIBA Americas tournament. Boozer is a good comparison

"You won’t find a smarter, more polished 16-year old than Trey Lyles. 6-10 & simply does everything offensively. What a talent #adidasnations" – Tweet from a scout who shall remain nameless.

I agree with that nameless scout, except for the fact that he’s not 6’10. He’s closer to 6’8 without any stand out physical qualities.

Gabriel Deck was another impressive PF on the junior national scene, averaging something like 22/7 on 59% shooting at the U17’s, yet you don’t hear his name as the next anything despite his skill level because he’s similarly undersized and lacking in stand out physical qualities.

Lyles is a big time prospect, no doubt there. As someone else mentioned, he’ll never be an elite athlete but he’s a growing 16 year old, not the kind of prospect who has already hit their peak athletically, so there’s room for growth there. He will eventually be a strong post player because he has a good base and huge legs, and his versatility will also help him. I watched him go for an easy 33 and 19 last year at a tourney.

I believe he’s a one and done because he will be highly productive right away, both scoring and on the glass. Too early to tell about just how good he can be in the league, although I think he’s at worst a productive scorer.

OhCanada I agree with what you’re saying about him recommitting, but this kid is not going to IU. There is a lot out there to suggest some dirty games were being played with his recrutiment. Word is his father is controlling everything, and tried to use his son’s commitment to get a job on the IU staff, which Tom Crean didn’t want. There has also been a lot said about them possibly being bought by Nike and already being a lock to Kentucky, which I do believe. Former IU player/coach and ESPN radio host Dan Dakich has gone back and forth with their family over bringing these rumors on the air, with them even threatening to sue him lol.

An interesting development is that IU has stopped recruiting him, which tells me there’s more there than him just wanting to go through the recruiting process, which none of us could blame a 16-year-old for wanting.

I live in Indianapolis and had heard bad things about Trey’s dad long before these rumors. It will be very interesting to see how it plays out.
