Tim Donaghy Says David Stern Will Make Sure Cavs Advance
Former NBA Referee, Tim Donaghy, has gone on record recently stating that he is certain that David Stern and the NBA will do whatever they can to ensure a Lakers/Cavs NBA Finals. Being a die-hard NBA fan for my entire life, I have tried not allowed myself to believe a lot of what’s been claimed about the NBA fixing games. The evidence this post season, however, is undeniably suspect.
Through three game’s played in the semi-finals, LeBron James has played 123 minutes (41, 43, 39) and only been called for three personal foul’s. In three game’s the Celtics have been called for 21 more fouls than the Cavaliers (78-57).
Coincidence? Well, lets look at the officiating crew for each game of the series.
Rush, Spooner, Phillips
Celtics 25 personal foul’s / Cavs 17 personal fouls
D. Crawford, Bavetta, Malloy
Celtics 31 personal fouls / Cavs 16 personal fouls
Salvatore, Mauer, Zarba
Celtics 22 personal fouls / Cavs 24 personal fouls
We all know that officiating can control the flow of the game in more ways than just personal foul’s called. officials can control the game by controlling turnovers, technical’s, etc. What may even be more suspect is that Tim Donaghy was given 14 post-season game’s to predict based solely on the officiating crew’s assigned and his knowledge of league initiatives.
Donaghy’s record? 13-1.
The only person that is responsible for the Cavs advancing to the Finals are Lebron himself and the Cavs Coach. Not David Stern, he does not control who goes to the finals. Nor do the officials. I don't know what you are talking about but the officials do not control the flow of the game. They have a bigger leash now then last season or seasons before hand. Just this last a bunch of officials were fired and new ones hired with more scrutiny. It seems to me like the NBA wants to be fair to everyone. And besides even if the officials did control the games more we would not be seeing such a close series between the Cavs and Celtics. Both teams are tied at 2. I have not been watching this series too much but I am sure that the calls made were good calls. I admit there are a few calls miss or a few they get wrong but not enough to change the game. They are not going to give free points to Cavs just to make sure they win. That would be cheating. Nor are they going to purposely say a 2 pointer was 3 when it was clearly on the line. The officials don't do stuff like that anymore, they have their jobs at stake. And maybe its true that Stern wants to see the Cavs as do I, but he can't do anything about it and nor can the officials. If he really wants to make sure that Lebron gets there then he should go talk every team that plays him and tell them to purposely suck just so the Cavs can advance. But if he does that then he would be fired as commissioner and he would also be fired as commissioner if he was the one responsible for making sure the Cavs advance. Even if I want the Cavs to get to the finals, in reality I really dont care who gets there. I know it will be great no matter what. (cavs are my first choice but after them I really don't care just as long as the Lakers don't make it.) And isn't that how it should be? May the best team win, and we fans should just enjoy the show no matter what happens!
lol at this topic. "my team surely would win but the lakers get all the calls". Boo hoo. Yeah, stern directed the spurs, nets and pistons to all those finals appearances as well.
Stern runs a billion dollar business with each team being owned by a billionaire. Hundreds of millions of dollars are bet on games. Stern would sit in prison for the rest of his life if he turned out to be fixing games. Get real guys. Donaghy has a vendetta against the league and his opinion is shi.t If you dont like calls, maybe the refs just make mistakes? They are human. I mean when fisher got tackled at the end of game 3, i dont hear laker fans saying the refs tried to give them the game. Put the tin foil hats down and man up when your team doesnt get it done.
The Cavs are not that good. I watched the series against the Bulls, and the calls were disheartening that the Cavs received time after time. Lehype and Shaq are the 2 of the hardest players to ref ever imo, because they are so much bigger than the players that they play against, and many of the calls could easily go both ways. I am not being bias, I will watch that Celtics vs Cavs game very closely tonight to make shure they don't rip off the Celtics. At times I really wonder if the players are in on it too, because the Celtics could easily demolish the Cavs.
argue with me and tell me why im wrong instead of just taking points. Taking points is easy. Having a reason why im wrong is not because there isnt one.
exactly who are you talking to about the points? People couldn't even tell me a better trade for the Raptors they just wanted to take away points. How lame is that? Man up and debate me, dont just take away points.
DNyce, thats cause your topic sucked. ANd they did argue with you. I could care less if people take my points as long as they argue and tell me why im wrong.
Llperez22, although I agree with you that Stern will not take an overt action to affect the outcome, there's no doubt that he's rooting for a Lakers-Cavs final. In fact, this has been going on for decades in the NBA where the big market teams are on television all the time. Back in the 80's, the league did everything they could, within the rules, to ensure a Boston - LA final.
What did they argue about? Telling me that Wes Matthews, and Derozan are better players than Shannon Brown? Lol Shannon shut you clowns up last night, I don't need to argue with any of you, Shannon will continue to make you clowns sound silly and im going to enjoy it.
agreed, he would be stupid to not root for the lakers vs cavs. The NBA would love the lakers vs cavs. But saying he is in anyway fixing the games is absurd. He's making millions. It's not like we are talking about a struggling business here. Everyone in the nba is rolling in money. ANd to think they would throw all that away for making more? The refs miss calls, so what. Im sure the cavs would have got there last year if stern wanted it to happen.
That's actually not true man. The NBA is losing fans and several teams are barely breaking even. Stern is more than ready to hype someone as "The Second Coming" 'cause he knows it'll bringin viewers.
DNyce, as a laker fan to another, you are a clown.
The topic didn't suck, Bosh has the Lakers very high on his list. As soon as July hits Bydumb will be traded in a sign and trade. I have been saying it all year long. I think it's hilarious that people think Bosh will leave a nice city like Toronto(trust me I know I lived there for 2 years) to go to Houston, San Antonio, or lame Utah. Bosh has stated that he wants to move to a city that has warm weather, that instantly cuts the teams down to LA and Miami. Read between the lines people. Miami doesn't have a player like Bynum and Shannon to trade, and they shurely are not a contender even with Bosh.
llperez its called a legacy you clown. They have manufactured Lehypes career to this point why would they stop now? The Lehype kids will stop believing in their god if he doesn't win a championship soon. Nevermind they will just continue to make excuses for him.
David Stern is the best commissioner in all of sports. He is proactive and willing to make changes when necessary. He is immersed in his sport and runs a great league. People need to realize that basketball is the toughest game to officiate of all sports, there is not one other sport out there that even comes close. Nearly all contact in the league, by definition should result in a foul. But the thing is, contact happens every single play in the NBA. While some contact goes unseen, other is negligible and even if by def. it should be a foul, calling every single bit of contact as a foul would result in a free throw contest as opposed to a basketball game.
Did you really need a crooked ref to tell you that the NBA sucks LeBrons d!ck? Watch the conference finals from last year again. The Magic were playing 5-on-8 and still beat the Cavs. Watch the Pistons series from that same year. Anytime one player outshoots an entire team from the foul line, there's a problem. The league is doing everything in it's power to make us believe that James is the second coming. He's allowed to get away with whatever he wants out there, and any time someone looks at him wrong the whistle blows. Too bad he lacks a killer instinct and cries anytime something doesn't go his way. The guy's a freak of nature and has off the charts basketball instincts, but like someone else said this is a business, and he's good for business so the league [read: David Stern] is making him look better than he is. The same is true of Dwyane Wade, to a lesser degree.
Oh yea a guy whose averaging 30.9 ppg 8.6 rpg 7.4 apg in the playoffs really must suck. LeBron is the worst player ever to step on the NBA hardwood ;)
Give me a break.
Exactly, if you know anything about the Illuminati you would know that Lehype is "the chosen one".
Whiteflash, isn't that a smart marketing strategy then??? Getting hype for the league is probably a smart thing to do IMO. Not his fault fans are losing their appeal. It is the result of a discrepancy of talent in the league. There are about 6 teams that are contentders and maybe 4 with a strong shot at a title each year. We are in a recession, decreased sales are to be expected. The NFL doesn't take as much of a hit as it is the most popular sport in the USA, and 16 games is much easier to sell than 82. Baseball is "America's past time" and the atmosphere if very appealing to families. We are the league stuck between MLB and NHL. We fall right in the slot. We can't hold games outside, we can't increase the value of NBA games either until talent is more widely spread throughout the league. This is not primarily Stern's fault.
MDYMES is that why Lehype shoots the most FTs in the NBA?
Do you see how much he drives to the hole, thats why he gets a &$#%#&@! load of calls. No player attacks the basket like him, no one.
I realize some of those calls are gifts, but when you attack the rim as recklessly as he does and take up as much space as he does while doing so, you are bound to get calls. Whose going to consistently take a charge on LeBron?
Everyone feels LBJ is a failure if he doesn't reach or exceed what Jordan did. He is still very young and people say he needs to get a ring now. So what if he wins 2 rings 4 mvps and gets a ton more accolades in his career, is he still considered a failure since he didn't exceed MJ? His expectations are unreasonable.
Is Jason Kidd a failure for never winning a ring?
Is Karl Malone a failure?
Is Charles Barkley a failure?
Dirk must suck.
Carmelo must blow.
Chris Bosh must be a bust.
Oh you mean the crab dribble to the rack? Kobe has given up with going to the rack in the regular season, because he knows that he isn't going to get the call, he also knows that he isn't 260 and on HGH so he saves his body for the real season(playoffs) just like Jordan did in the past.
The way some of you get points on this site has become a huge joke. I will continue to give thumbs up and down for real reasons. Take a look at the clowns in the John Wall failed the drug test thread, they are getting thumbs up for things that has nothing to do with basketball, how silly is that?
Great for Kobe that hes not on HGH. But LeBron is huge and takes up a lot more space. Even if it is wrong with how he got his body (and he very well may have worked for that body legitimately) is still is a fact that when he drives he takes more space and will cause more contact. And if those bodies aren't set, it is a foul on them. A legit foul. Not LBJs fault or the officials that he is a freak of nature athletically.
Oh DNYCE, you mean the way you give yourself a point for each of your posts and then give a -1 to anyone who disagrees with you. Its pretty damn obvious. I'm sure you don't have a stalker that gives you +1 within 10 seconds of every one of your posts.
I've already stated that I do, because I speak nothing but the truth. I also know that there are tons of kids on this site that just take points away as soon as they see the Black Mamba pic. Man up little girls.
1. Anyone who swears repeatedly that LeBron, Kobe, or any other star player is terrible and is only winning because there is some huge conspiracy to make fans like someone who is not really a good player at all has some serious growing up to do.
2. As suspect as some calls and games in the NBA are, I think that Stern is far from telling the refs outright to fix a game in favor of one team or another. However, it does not seem to me that Stern is helping the NBA's reputation much by protecting his refs at all costs no matter how bad the call. The refs will always favor some players over others because they are not perfect, they do sometimes play favorites but generally make the correct call.
3. If given the choice, I would take Wes Matthews over Shannon Brown. Any rookie that goes undrafted and works hard enough to play all 82 games for Sloan has my vote, and did I mention that as a rookie Matthews still had better stats than Brown did this year...
Could someone put Wes Matthews stats up please. I mean the guy did start, usually you will have better stats than someone who plays 20mpg a game, no?
If figured that, I have about 3 haters on this site that I can think of. I get -1 at least from one of the regardless of what I post. I really just don't care anymore. Despite the fact that I often disagree with DNYCE, I respect that he is persistent an continues to post his opinions despite the crap load of minuses he gets consistently. I'll give him a +1 for that.
Not only did he have better stats, but his efficiency ratings were better as well, those ratings take into account playing time.
Matthews: 9.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.5 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.15 bpg, 24.7 mpg, eff = 9.1
Brown: 8.1 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.3 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.38 bpg, 20.8 mpg, eff = 7.5
Since all star break:
Matthews: 11.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.23 bpg, 29.4 mpg, eff = 11.7
Brown: 8.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.3 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.68 bpg, 22.6 mpg, eff = 7.9
I love it...Its totally true. You watch those games and you can tell the Cavs get calls. I remember last year against the Magic thinking alot of questionable calls going to the Cavs. There are countless times when Cleveland gets calls...maybe not blatant ones, but those 50 50 calls that could go either way...I think Cleveland gets damn near all of those. But thats how it works when the leagues golden boy is on the team and hasnt gotten a championship yet. Every casual basketball fan knows who Lebron and Kobe are...so that matchup would be the easiest to market. I personally would like to see an LA Boston matchup.
Wes Matthews has also stated that Kobe is the best player in the world.
Wes Matthews is a 23 year old rookie, Shannon is 24 and he just found a place that will show him love
Biggysmalls I agree, I would much rather a Celtics vs Lakers finals.
DFish vs Rondo
Kobe vs Sugar Ray
Tru Warrior vs The Truth
The Spaniard vs KG
Bynum vs Perkins
This is a true basketball fan dream matchup
I think Stern does try to influence in some way some game like when Miami beat Dallas Stern had his hand in that but my thing is Orlando is too deep that I doubt Stern can pull it off by having Orlando lose to Cleveland because when a team can shoot jumpers like that Magics do it does not matter the calls too much.
Every fan that loves and follows basketball would love to see the Lakers & Cavs go at it...Except fans of the Magic & Suns dont wanna see it..But Donaghy should never show his face in public again..He should be thanking the Lord he didnt get a longer sentence
DNYCE, do you think Kobe would cover Rondo and they would have Fisher try to cover Allen on the perimeter? I think if Fisher has to cover Rondo, that is a huge mismatch that the Celtics can exploit. What do you think as a Lakers fan.
basketbalalan thanks, the stats prove that Shannon is definitely the better player, dont forget that Matthews is playing in a system that has a true point guard to set him up, and Sloans offense is a free flowing offense with more freedom to jack up shots.
No doubt Kobe would take Rondo, Lehype is just now deciding to take Rondo in game 5(trying to be like his mentor Kobe) lol. Pierce should have a huge game.
No doubt Kobe would take Rondo, Lehype is just now deciding to take Rondo in game 5 lol.
Didn't Kobe wait till game 5 to guard Russell Westbrook? YUP
Was Kobe dealing with a bum knee? Yup
Did Kobe shut him down? Yup
Was Westbrook a proven playoff player? No
Where was Lehype when Turkoglu torched them? Why was he guarding Alston? The funny thing is Alston went to work on Lehype
Brian Scalibrine could go tro work on Lebron..... i cant name a worse defender, if it wasnt for bias ass refs he would be out of the league just like Gerald Green.
"if it wasnt for bias ass refs he would be out of the league just like Gerald Green."
Worst statement ever. First of all Gerald Green could really just dunk. Lebron can dunk just as good and he has the speed and size to get those dunks in a game and not on a fast break or dunk contest (he doesn't even need the calls cause he misses free throws anyways). Lebron also has court vision which is something Gerald Green would wish he had. Even if Lebron didn't get many calls he would still put up great numbers. I don't think refs have an effect on blocks, assists, or rebounds and not to mention Lebron has to play with some sub-par teammates. Also, Kobe has Gasol who is a multiple all-star and has been on the all-nba team. Lebron has Mo Williams, a player who made the all star game as replacement (And Lebron whining about it) and a very old Shaq who is nothing like he used to be.
Also Wes Matthews is a great defender. Shannon Brown isn't.
You must be one of those bias ass refs.
"Also Wes Matthews is a great defender. Shannon Brown isn't."
Neither player is a great defender. I think Matthews is a better defender (has potential to become an elite defender), but Brown is definitely no slouch at the defensive end. He's strong, long, has great lateral foot speed and is super athletic.
When I was typing most of my mind was thinking on the Lebron topic, and I forgot that Brown can be a decent defensive player. Also I believe Matthews can become an elite defender in even 3-4 years.
Shannon Brown is a very good defender what are you talking about Zeroooooo? He is a better defender than Matthews
