Now that the summer league is underway it’s time to highlight some of the standouts. Keep in mind that 2 or 3 games is a small sample size.

Christian Wood- I was surprised he went undrafted last year. He had a rough year with the sixers, but so far in the summer league he has flashed some potential and he is still only 20 years old. It will be intersting to see his role going forward on the Sixers with their present logjam at the 4 and 5 especially if Saric comes over and Embiid can stay healthy.

Johnathon Simmons and Kyle Anderson- these two have been head and shoulders above the competition. Most impressive to me is their efficiency as they are both 20-33 from the field. I also find it impressive that slow-mo is playing pretty good defense(or making people think so with his numbers) despite his lack of athleticism and quickness. I could see these two having increased roles this year as San Antonio’s core continues to age(aside from Leonard who is aging right into his prime). Popovich is notorious for resting star players so Anderson and Simmons may have a chance to shine this year.

Josh Richardson- He is another guy who could have a good year in the regular season. In the summer league he has been extremely efficient. In the summer league guys tend to look for their own shot first and in the process they take bad shots and try to make bad passes when they get in trouble. He’s done a good job playing his game and doing it with confidence and as a result he is outplaying the competition.

I’m curious to see what everyone thinks about Summer League play so far.

You have to mention Cameron Payne as one of the most impressive guys. Have you not been watching? He’s been phenomenal. Running the show extremely well, knocking down the jumper, tight handle. McGary looks like he can help OKC this year.

Simmons looked as good as advertised in his single game. Really impressed with the vision, passing, and strength. Cramps took him out down the stretch.

Jonathon Simmons and Kyle Anderson both looked seasoned. Really can tell they’ve been around the block (albeit not very long but more experience than most). Forbes jumper is really really smooth.

I thougjt Jaylen Brown also had a great first game. Missed too many free throws and was a bit out of control at times, but skills and mentality are there.

Trey Lyles was someone I wasn’t super high on last year, but man he came out firing that first game. Looked like he deserved to be a lot lottery pick.

Winslow and Richardson looked strong as well. The whole Miami squad has been great. But those guys look seasoned out there.

Ellenson looks like a great pick up. Great jumper and knows how to play the game. Stanley Johnson also looked great out there. Expecting a big year for him.

Christian Wood, is really athletic and runs fast. He can be a really good stretch big player that the team can dump the ball next to the rim or lob for the finish. He has a really nice shooting stroke, and nice looking 3 ball. He also displays a nice mid range game because can blow by big men or take the mid range shot. I wished he was on a different team because the log jam the 76ers have with big men. He is young and only going to get better. I think he could start for a lot teams or down the road.
