Jr. ROXASParticipantHey guys, I just want to generate a discussion on who are the players not eing talked about much that have impressed you this summer league. Everyone talks about and is impressed by players such as Simmons, Dunn, Brown, and recently Ulis and etc… Who other players have caught your eye? Here are a few of mine:
Chieck Diallo- I’ll be first to admit I was never high on this guy out of HS and especially Kansas. He is showing me something though this summer league. He is a tenacious rebounder and defender, and has quite a surprisingly soft touch around the rim. His motor is insane too.
Ron Baker- Way back Orlando SL. Man, I hope he cracks the Knicks roster then rotation ahead of Vujacic. He has such a sweet jumper and is a really gritty defender. He can also act as a secondary ball-handler. Has all the tools to be a quality role player in this league.
Terry Rozier- Sooner or later im’ma make a post about this guy. Kid can ball. No one could stay in front of him because he combines perfectly elite speed and shiftiness. He also has such a great handle and control of the ball. His pull-up J is a beauuutyyyy. Not to mention great finishing abilities and ball-hawk defense. Am I wrong to think Stephon Marbury here, The passing is not there yeat obviously but offensvely, I see some similarities. He needs to start for a team asap.

gforce03ParticipantSo glad my Hornets is able to sign with him before everyone else does. Long, athletic, shoot 3s and only 20 years old. He will be on the bench/D-League for most of the season but he is a great fit to the Hornet’s playing style.

daggers818ParticipantLove him and JS tearing up the summer leagues! Slow Mo got trashed here prior to the draft with most predicting no ability to play at the level of speed in the NBA. He got drafted fortunately into the perfect system and will likely emerge into the Boris Diaw role now. I’ve been a big fan of his all-around game and court intelligence since his high school days. Hope to see him make the most of this coming opportunity.

SlickBouncePassParticipantdidn’t like him because I felt he took playtime/experience/showcasing away from Zach Lavine. I also really disliked Alford playing his son more minutes than Lavine. Classic father/son coach/player only its at UCLA!
In the end, Lavine was/is a mental midget as far as playing the game the right way.
Kyle Anderson plays the game very well and am happy to say I was wrong about him at UCLA.
I am no longer a huge Zach Lavine fan, but I was definitely on his boat when people were debating him and garry Harris.
Happy that debate has had its fire doused. Lavine still has a ton to prove though.

OhCanada-ParticipantCJ Fair has a complete game I wonder why he isn’t in the NBA. He is athletic and long enough to faurd three positions SG, SF, PF, he can knock down shots, is not a great ballhandler but he isn’t terrible, and is super athletic. He really digs in defensively and had a game with 20-points, 3-steals and 3-blocks. I would love for my Raps to pick him up.

dcaseParticipantAs a Syracuse fan I really hope he makes a roster. He looked really good in that 20 point game but unfortunately followed it up with a dud (3pts/3rebs). He has always been a good athlete but has really expanded his shooting range while playing in the D league.
He is now going to play in the upcoming TBT for Boeheim’s Army (winning team gets $2mil).

Memphis MadnessParticipantWith contracts like they are, I am not wasting ANY money on the back end of my bench.
I am paying about 8 guys or 9 guys, then I would fill out the REST of the roster with guys on rookie deals, undrafted free agents, and D Leaguers.
Your TYPICAL 9th or 10th man isn’t THAT much better than a D League all-star or late first round pick.
Look for teams to stockpile draft picks — even if they are only second rounders.
You could come out being a top 5 team in the draft JUST by having 3 or 4 decent 2nd round picks…
I would pay my starters, a third guard, a third big man, and a backup 3 and D wing player (hopefully one with some athleticism).
THEN, what I think I would do is get a 5 man BARGAIN BASEMENT bench mob made up of guys on minimum/rookie contracts. Balanced though with a little bit of ball handling, some shooting, a defender or two, and some shot blocking/rim protecting. Then towards the end of the year pick up one of those former NBA vagabonds who is currently vagabonding in China or Europe or on a beach somewhere in South Florida.

His touch isn’t great and has brick hands. In summerleague he has continued to play very physical basketball and players don’t really wanna mix it up with him during summer as a risk ofi injury.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantJuan hernangomez looked very impressive in the one game I saw him play. Definitely has a high iq and saavy for a player just 20 years old. Can really shoot it from deep and shows a willingness to battle on the boards. Still needs to get stronger and might be overmatched defensively some nights, but definitely shows the makings of a solid rotation player and prototypical stretch 4.

nill650ParticipantWhenever I watch a summer league game, When I see the under contract players trying to improve thier games by playing outside of thier comfort zones, I am more impressed than players just doing what they are already good at to validate thier draft position or to make them look better than thier draft position.
The ones trying to make rosters have no choice but to showcase what they are good at, and work on thier deficiencies elsewhere.
They key take away for me, is ; do they have the work ethic to go with what I already know about them…will they use every opportunity they get(summer league) to develop thier skill sets against others at the same level, so they get on the floor when it counts.
I do not look at these players that are just doing what they are good at and say yep they will translate well, it has bitten me too many times to look at it that way.
fyi: if an undrafted player is’nt getting any playing time, don’t be surprised if they’re being hidden because of what the team already sees is going to translate, rather than lack of readiness to play.

nill650ParticipantWhenever I watch a summer league game, When I see the under contract players trying to improve thier games by playing outside of thier comfort zones, I am more impressed than players just doing what they are already good at to validate thier draft position or to make them look better than thier draft position.

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantMe too. He’s a good finisher around the rim, can rebound, and is athletic for a center. I’ve also seen him bring the ball up the court a few times which is good the way this team is built as they can run a faster pace

McDunkinKyle Kuric has been looking nice to me both in hustle and consistently being a sniper this is even more impressive since he’s coming back from 3 brain tumor related surgeries months ago. He most likely won’t stick with a team but will definitely get overseas offers and a few call ups if he goes the dleague route.
