I have been watching highlights of Mahmoud and I’m kind of in awe of some of the performances he put on. If he would’ve never went through all the controversy he went through and found the right fit early on in his career, could he have been sometwhere near to what Stephen is today. Granted I’m only judging by highlight I’ve watched, but man are they impressive. Can some older fans help me out, what was he missing? Lightning quick, tight mean crossover and Steph-like release on his jumper, I wish I was able to watch this guy play.

Had deceptive  hops and was great from the line. Steph is better. I seen him drop 50 plus in the L.

I remember him from back in the days he was Chris Jackson. I wouldn’t compare him to Steph though. He was a very good player for a little while, but he was never a Top 10 guy in the league like Steph is. He was also able to shoot from deep, but he was no where near Best Shooter in the League category like Steph is in.

Well I don’t know if y’all remember but you can look it up, and ‘NBADRAFT.NET’ actually used Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf as the player comparison for Stephen Curry, the main point in how they are comparable is their ability to shoot off of the dribble. Chris Jackson was so quick with his shot and his crossover, kind of how Steph is today. Amazing player at LSU with Stanley Roberts, Shaquille O’Neal, and Vernel Singleton (who was a pretty good player in his own right, but wayyyy overshadowed). He was on his way to being good in the NBA until he converted to Islam, and had the National Anthem debacle, he also has tourette’s (along the same lines as Shabazz Muhammed).

Averaged 29 points per game in college, I believe he stills holds the freshman scoring recored. Pete Maravich also of LSU played in a time when freshman couldn’t play. I looked up to him so much growing up. Still my bio pic till these day.

Ehh to the CJ/MAR to Steph comp. Coming out Steph was a totally different player and one expected to play a different role. He was a full time SG to Jason Richards at Davidson and has since developed his point skills quite a bit. He was also a guy playing with lesser competition and a guy that was so far ahead of the rest of his own team as well in terms of talent, so there was some question about how his skill would translate. The thought was that he was going to be a scorer like CJ, but had become a much better all-around player.

And don’t think I’m taking away anything from CJ- I actually believe he was an under-rated player in the league. My only issue is that he and Steph aren’t good comps for each other.

i think pistol pete nailed it ..injuries and when he converted to muslim which changed the way he approached the game were the reasons why he failed to live up to expectaions…… refusing to stand for the anthem, covering up the logos on his shoes and fasting for ramadan during the season caused him to lose weight and it affected his stamina..

kansas state guard marcus foster reminds me a little of mahmoud abdul rauf..

This dude was unbelievable in college. He’s an example of his highlights don’t lie. AT least in college. He was lightning quick in college with shooting range many feet behind the 3 point line. He scored at will in college because not only did he have range and speed, but he had super handles and had a stop on a dime from anywhere jumper out of this world. He was like some genius or something when you would see him make different shots.
He’d be a totally different than he was in the NBA, if he was now in THIS shoot first pg league. He’d probably average 22 to 24 points or something even with injuries because he’d be encouraged to score. It was different then. He still averaged 20 a game before in the league. Steph to me is a good comparison as a scorer, shooter and shot maker. STephs a purer point guard though

Similar game, but realy Steph does everything better. He didn’t quite have the range Steph has and he was a little smaller than Steph and possibly even skinnier. Guy was a scorer and was league leader at FT%. He was obsessive compulsive and he would shoot free throws for hours. I think it was something like he couldn’t leave the court until he hit ten free throws in a row where the net swished in the right way. I doubt I’m getting it quite right, but it was certainly not I stay until I hit ten. There was something about how the shot had to be perfect and not just go in.

In 1995 Denver turned him loose from three point land he shot his best percentage. I think in a way that was a bit ahead of his time there. Also you could handcheck in the 90’s and at 175 pounds other guards could slow him down easy with one hand. So it was probably harder for him then than it would be now.

    I like the comparison.

    OK, a few things.

1- I think it is a very good comparison since both had an incredible ability to get shots off quickly, deep and with an amazing dribble into shooting.

2 – I was able to see Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf in his freshman year and his few years in the league, I have a good grasp of what he did and could do. In fact his freshman season was thought to be the best for a freshman ever, even beating out Melo and Durant on some poll (ESPN or Sports Illustrated?) I can’t remember.

3 – But what only 1 poster mentioned for Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf’s down fall was the fact that he had tourretts syndrome. He was given Medication for it, (which he claimed made him too groggy) but more importantly, he stated that his Muslim beliefs did not allow him to take those medications.

4 – .Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf had incredible creative scoring ability despite barely standing 6′ tall. It is a shame that he never really had a chance to show to what level he could have got to.

But I will say he was the Original “Steph Curry” clone.

Well… that’s what scoring PG’s looked like in the 90s. CJ’s athleticism was off the charts though (and Curry is more skilled).

Whenever I look at players like Kemba Walker, Shane Larkin, Tony Parker, Kyle Lowry… I see 90s basketball a little bit. Scoring PGs who do not fit the post-Iverson stereotype.

Curry is the modern day Chris Jackson!!!! Chris was deadly from all over!!! Steph has a better 3 point percentage but CJ has a better mid range and driving to the bucket but his 3 pointers was wet also!!!! CJ career would have been evening greater if the MBA didn’t blackball him out the league!!!!!!! Chris Jackson aka Rauf was bad mf. Steph will have a better NBA career but I think CJ was clearly the better player especially in high school and college!!!!
