I was reading the topic of Ray Allen ever being a superstar http://www.nbadraft.net/forum/was-ray-allen-ever-superstar-player and it got me wondering what everyone’s thoughts were on what is the difference between a star and a superstar. What exactly do you think seperates them?

I think media recognition plays a major factor in this. a player like Joe Johnson, plays like a star, but lacks that superstar glow that players like MJ, Kobe, Lebron, Etc, possess.

shoe sales, draw to the stadium (who MUST you see play, etc…),  ego…

if you want to quantify it somehow, look at all-star appearances, mvp awards, all-nba teams, etc…

basically all the sh*t that people like dennis johnson, scottie pippen, bill laimbeer, etc don’t care about, but ego-centric babies like lebron do.

superstars can carry a team. They draw the defensive attention from opposing coaches every night and require serious game planning. They can be the number 1 option on a contender. They routinely make an all nba 1st, 2nd or 3rd squad.

Number 1 option on a contender.  You won’t see Monta Ellis be the #1 option on the Lakers and probably not even the #2 option.  But on the Warriors, he’s been able to carry them a decent amount.

Some players have a higher media profile than others and I tend to like the term franchise players to define all the top stars who could effectively carry a franchise. At his peak Ray Allen could do this and as he got into his 30’s he went to Boston and took on a more collective role alongside KG and Paul Pierce.

The Detroit team which was competing year in year out from 2003 to 2008 had a lot of stars but not one standout player and the Spurs team built around Tim Duncan has a lot of stars but no other real superstars apart from Tim Duncan who himself did most of his talking via his performances on court.
