The Houston Rockets agreed with guard James Harden on a five-year, $80 million contract Wednesday, league sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard.

The deal comes four days after the Rockets pulled off a stunning trade to acquire Harden from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Houston sent shooting guard Kevin Martin and 2012 first-round draft pick Jeremy Lamb to Oklahoma City, along with future draft choices.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey called Harden a "foundational player" on Monday, stating that the reigning Sixth Man of the Year is "a player we can build around."

No wonder OKC traded him. Harden’s a great player, but he’s not worth 16mil for the next 5 years. Bad move by the Rocks, although it could very well pay off if they build around him correctly.

He’s worth EXACTLY what he got paid. EVERYONE is paid what they’re worth. Oklahoma City simply could not afford to pay him that much.

So he signed for 16 million a year.  When the Thunder tried to give him 14 mil a year.  So it looks like he will get an extra 10 mil out of this contract.  Now I wonder what you guys think.  Would you give up 2 million a year to play next to 2 of the top 10 players in the league (who they seem to be very good friends), be in title contention for the next decade, and possibly get even greater advertisement deals based on the titles and what have you, or would you say peace to your good friends, and go to a first round knock out for the next couple years for that extra measly money.  Personally I can just as nice of a house/car/jewely/illegitamate kids for 14 mil a year but also have a couple rings, as 16 mil a year with no rings.

Sometimes its not always being about the money. He wanted want he thought he deserved and nothing less. Look what happened to Rondo. He signed a contract way below what he could have got else wear and this entire summer they tried to dangle him for Chris paul, wears the loyatly there? I know that if i was a somebody at the top of my profession i would want to be paid accordingly to what my peers were, i didnt see Durant or Westbrook take less so why is everyone on Hardens case? And where did u get 10 million from Ksmith? He was offered 4 years 55 by OKC and 5 years 80 mill by Houston. More money plus another gaurnteed year of financial security nobodys that dumb. Also when Yao played with the rockets everybody on the team was featured more in the Asian market and getting advertisement money from a Chinese economy on the rise for basketball, Jeremy lin will do the same thing for Harden and he will probably make more that way then any Ad he would have secured here.

I’m okay with this deal.  I knew it was coming.  He’s going to be our franchise player and I fully believe he can be a 25ppg, 6rpg, 6apg kind of guy in his prime.

In 3 years, Harden will be the best SG in the league.

I like Harden (probably the only guy on earth who thought he should’ve went ahead of Blake Griffin in the draft), but this just seems like Joe Johnson’s deal all over again, albeit with a younger, less proven guy.

Do I think he will be good? Absolutely, just like Johnson in Atlanta when he was averaging 20 5 and 5 for years in a row. But I don’t see Harden being a guy who can lead a team far, and I think Houston just put themselves in a position of mediocrity. They will probably make the playoffs most years, but never be a true contender.

To Champzilla… He was offered a 4 year/56 Million dollar contract.  That equals out to 14 million a year for four years.  The Rockets signed him to a 5 year/80 Million dollar contract.  That is 16 Million a year.  That means he is getting an additional 8 million in the 4 years in houston compared to the 4 yeras in OKC.  I figure OKC would eventually sign him for about the same which would have equivolated to the additional 2 mil for the last year bringing the grand total to 10 mil over the 5 year span.  I don’t disagree with what Harden did, and I believe Houston has a good team, very deep and can be a constant playoff contender. But the way the NBA is set up with a best of 7 series there is less room for upsets and I do not believe that a core of Harden/Asik/Lin/Morris is better than a core of Durant/Westbrook/Ibaka/Harden and since they are in the same conference I think he made a bad decision ring wise.  Now if the NBA playoffs were scheduled for a best of 3, best of 5, best of 7, I think he would have made a better choice as that allows more upsets and the media loves a cinderella story, but as is, I think I would take 10 million over 5 years less to be a legitimate title contender than to be a first round bounce out.
