Each year it seem that there are some prospects from non-power conferences who earn a spot on a roster and become pretty solid players. In fact, each of the last 5 drafts we’ve seen a point guard from a small conference go in the lottery. That streak will probably end this year, but just for fun who are some of the other small-school prospects who you have your eyes on that might get picked or that might find a way into the league someday? Gonzaga and UNLV always seem to have some solid prospects, and DeAndre Bembry has put himself on the map, but looking past the obvious, here are some small-school players I like that are not in either of the current mocks:

AJ English – Iona – Stat sheet stuffer and I love big point guards who can distribute. Can shoot (37%

Shawn Long – LA Lafeyette – Amazing rebounder, NBA size, stretch 4 potential.

John Brown – High Point – High energy player who can’t shoot but plays hard D and can rebound/run the floor. NBA level athlete for sure.

Kahlil Felder – Oakland – Could be a less erratic Nate Robinson. Amazing strength/athleticism makes up somewhat for height, Isaiah Thomas showing small guards can thrive in modern NBA. Leads country in assists.

Hassan Martin – Rhode Island – I see a lot of McDaniels in him. Offense needs work but his energy level, body and athleticism are perfect for an NBA role player.

Kyle Collinsworth – BYU – Might not have the athleticism for the NBA, but one of the most skilled players in the country plus has NBA size. Secondary ball-handlers are becoming more important in the NBA.

Good call on Kyle Collinsworth… Though I’m a Utes fan… I still think that he could be a really good player. I think that the best he could probably get is 8 points 5 rebounds and 5 assists somewhere in that ballpark, but he still has a high iq and so he’d be worth a second round pick.

Kay Felder said he’d return to school. I’d take Ron Baker too

Alec Peters from valpo has the potential to be a solid stretch four in the league. He can really shoot the ball for a player his size.  Sort of reminds me of ryan anderson in that regard. The question is whether he will be able to defend.

Shawn Long is my favourite player on that list. He is one of the best rebounders in NCAA history and can provide spacing as well. Should be a solid rotation player.

Makai Mason-Yale: smart scorer, good shooter, average defender.
Justin Sears-Yale: Talented PF, can score in a variety ways. High energy player.
Maodo Lo-Columbia: german floor general, can spread the floor and know how to play in the passing lanes.

Everyone of these players hold their own everytime they faced major schools
