Hey, i’ve been having trouble shooting the ball, (off the dribble, off the screen/pass) all year. I’m good at spot up jumpers or using the jabstep and so on the catch my defender off balance and taking the shot. But I really struggle to get to my shooting form off the dribble or just basically when i don’t have the time to set my hands on the ball for a shot. Do you guys know any good vids or anything like that?? Thanks lol

learn to keep the ball close to your head while you are jumping. If you bring it almost all the way back by your ear, then there is little room to mess up at that point then once you are in the act of leaving the ground you can go through with your follow through. Also, unless you have hops, you will want to make sure you really get your hand under the ball and get some upward lift and some arc under your shot since off the dribble shots you wont have as much time to follow through and get power with your arms.

yeah, its hard to adjust your off your the dribble jumper becasue you dont have that kinda time to line it up and get all your follow through mechanics down. Thats why keeping it close to your head and minimalizing the movement and getting arch under it so it has a chance to go in instead of guiding it like a normal set shot is important. But yeah, just watch the best shooters and do what they do. I think my favorite jump shooter to mimic is vince carter.

I can offer u somethings its what I do off the screen make sure u catch it atleast chest height don’t bring it down from there just go into ur shooting motion as u catch the ball (this should be done going right off the screen) take little steps before going into the screen then one big with the left going first plant it as u catch the ball followed by the right then shoot… The main problem with shooting is people try new things tweeking it abit stuff like that DONT DO THAT! try to shoot it the same way everytime adjusting is ok but from catching to release should be the same everyway… Watching players like Kobe, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis they shoot it the same way everytime defender or not fadeaway off screen etc players that don’t is Paul Pierce he doesn’t have the same shot his three is different from the mid and his motions are never the same… I would recommend NBA Fundamentals Shooting with Ray Allen

As dipt1982 mentioned before, a pump fake is a great way to check see where your shot is failing you. A pump fake and your power position on a jumpshot (i.e. knees bent, ball up above your head) should be the same. It is common the ball will be late when shooting off the dribble as it has a further, less predictable distance to travel. If your hands are late when setting up for your shot fake, you need to work on getting them more in sync with your feet. If your shot fake is correct, you might want to look at your balance when you jump compared to your jumpshot.

As for a book, the best basketball book I’ve read is Pete Newell’s “Playing big”. Recommend it to every player out there!

When you come off the pick or dribble or whatever make sure your shoulders are square to the basket

I’ve joined this forum to maybe help you with your problem. Without actually seeing you play, I’d say you are rushing your shot for whatever reason——a lack of athleticism? In catch and shoot situations, you are probably comfortabe, and you need to find that same “comfort” zone off the dribble. When I played, I’d do a drill that I called “pick-up”, I’d dribble hard 3 to 5 times and just pick the ball up off the dribble, wouldn’t shoot, just tried to get comfortable picking the ball up and getting into my shooting position. If you catch and shoot well, then that means you have a good shot—–you only need to get to and through your shot mechanics faster. You have to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE, repetition is the key. Finally, while you may get better at shooting-off-the-dribble, PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS. Try to learn how to get open to use your catch and shoot skill. There are NBA players who catch and shoot very well while the are NOT goood shooter off-the-dribble. Remember, missing a rushed shot means you didn’t score anyways. Take shots you can make, no need to take shots and miss. Put the ball in the basket, don’t take shots to take, take shots to make. There are some excellent points above as well. Hope this helps!!! Good luck.
