What’s the deal with this guy?  I hardly ever saw him play throughout his career but his size/athleticism combination is ridiculous.  Although he doesn’t have a great wingpsan, he’s a legit 6’5 (w/o shoes) and has a 41.5 inch vertical, all this while having a solid 200 pound frame.  Those numbers are almost Vince Carter esque at the shooting guard position.  I know he’s old for his class but it seems a little odd to me that a guy with those measurables and a nice jump shot would be considered a fringe prospect.  Does he have character issues?  If not, is it purely his age that is holding him back?  Him being 23 is a legitimate concern but I’m still surprised by the complete lack of attention he is getting.

The deal is that he just isn’t that good at basketball lol.  His size and athleticism has carried him to this level, but he hasn’t improved much and he relies on his athleticism to be effective. Having a higher skillset and bball IQ is trending for wings and guards right now and he doesn’t have enough of either to be a highly touted prospect. Remember Joe Alexander? Drafted in the lottery by the Bucks about at 8 years ago. His combination of size and athleticism screamed great wing player, but he just wasn’t good enough at basketball to remain in The Association.

Appreciate the analysis.  I knew there had to be some catch, because his athletic numbers and shooting %’s seemed too good to be true for a fringe draft prospect.

Isn’t that good at basketball? I’m not sure how you can not be good at basketball and average 16 points per game on a 50/41/83 shooting line playing in one of the best conferences in America. The Alexander comparison is awful. Alexander was a 6’8 tweener who was not big enough to play PF full-time and was not skilled enough to play small forward. McCellan has legit NBA shooting guard size and athleticism and has shown throughout his college career that he can make shots, whether it is off the catch or off the dribble. No, he does not have the best BBIQ and has had the reputation as a hot head, though his attitude has improved over his college career. However, he has been productive throughout his whole college career and has steadily improved his numbers each year.

No one is saying the guy is going to be an a starter but you’re crazy to think that this kid won’t have a shot at being a team’s second string SG. McClellan is extremely talented and is also experienced. The only thing that has ever stopped this kid from being elite is his attitude.

His age, his lack of all around game, his hot head(from what i saw) and i’m not convinced either by his nba 3 pts range.

It wouldn’t be a crime to select him in the 50’s tho.

Legit SG, great athlete, D-leaguer, 3rd stringer nba or solid career in europe i guess.

We’ll see him in summer league, drafted or not.

I think he’s the next Wes Matthews. He was a solid player at Miami and can impact the game in a number of ways. I watched the combine scrimmage and he looked great. I’d much rather have a guy like this than a project that may never amount to anything.
