OK Please help me out on this one. James harden is 6’5 1/2 and Demar Derozan is 6’6 3/4. James harden is considered undersized by everyone that writes about him. Then I hear people saying that Derozan would be one of the tallest players playing SG in the NBA. So explain to me how SG’s have only a 1 and 1/4 inch range that they should be. That is the stupidest thing ever. Your saying that giving up more than an inch and a half would create mismatches? How come PGs can be from 6’1 to 6’5 and there’s no mismatches created there? or the centers who are 6’11(dwight howard, perkins) and 7’3yet no one says they cause mis matches? All I’m asking is for people to realize that you can give up almost 3-4 inches on a guy and not be out of place. A 6’4 SG can guard 6’7 SGs relatively the same as a 6’6 guy. For now on all I ask is for people to not call James Harden and players his size small sized. He’s only off by 1 1/4 inch of Derozan who’s suppose to have amazing size for a SG. This is stupid, stupid, stupid.

people used to think harden was undersized before the results came in when they thought he was gunna be closer to 6′ 3.5″. But when they refer to DeRozan as being big i think theyre talking about his wingspan and reach. While it doesnt create too much of a mismatch like you said. It would be easier for derozan to alter hardens shot then it would the other way around just based on reach. There are exceptions though…Iverson made the all defensive team a few times.

      Dlipto11,

      Your first sentence was dead-on.

However, we now know that Harden actually has better wingspan and standing reach than DeRozan.

I think Derozan is perceived as having a better reach simply because of his height and athleticism.

There can now be no doubt that Harden has the size/length to play BOTH Wing positions. So even if his weight slows him down a bit in the halfcourt setting against athletic SG’s, he can switch over and hang with the SF’s. Things are looking good for James.

Ideal size….probably 6’6”….many can get by playing the 2 guard at 6’5 though.

Who said Derozan would be one of the tallest shooting guards in the NBA?? He is an average sized player. 6’4” and up is average size for a 2 guard. Harden isnt undersized at all

    Dwat444,

Like dlipto said, people simply expected Harden to measure out smaller than he was listed. There is a lot of “literature” left out there on Harden making this assumption.

I think his roundish body-type made him look shorter and stubbier than he actually is.

Now we know that his size is legit, thanks to the combine measurements.

There are 2 range of heights of the SG. The Wades etc (6-3 to 6-5) are combo guards. And the (6-6 to 6-8 ) are wing players, Vince Carter etc. That would be Budinger and DeRozan in this draft. So it actually depends on how a team would like to utilise their SG.

I have a little rule. At the minimum, you want your SG’s wingspan plus standing reach to roughly equal 15 feet.

Using this rule, small SG Ben Gordon measures out to 14’11.5″
Small SG Eric Gordon measures out to 15′

Chase Budinger has no length. Even though he is 6’7″, his wingspan plus reach equals exactly 15′, the same as 6’3″ Eric Gordon. Good thing Chase measured well in agility and maximum vertical jump.

But theoretically, being 6’7″ helps Chase see the floor and see over defenders for shooting purposes.
