I'm going to start this post with a simple statement...I don't care about the outcome of this thread, I am fully aware this is my opinion and that everyone is entitled to have their own..." I am sick of Blake Griffin already"...I completely agree with the statement made by Andre Miller, the NBA has crowned its new golden boy and his name is Griffin...when fans have the power to vote in fan favorites instead of the 12 best basketball players in the east and west we have a problem...in the recent history of the All Star Game we've seen a crippled Yao Ming voted in by communist China, his former team mate and fellow ER patient Tracey Mcgrady voted in for being associated with Yao and guys like AI, Nash, Duncan and half the 2011 Boston Celtics voted in based on reputation and blah, blah , blah...We have been told our entire lives as fans that our star players have meet a certain criteria and Dammit Griffin just broke the mold...Not Lebron, Durant, Rose, or instant superstar x, but Blake Griffin sets the standard for what criteria our all stars must meet to become All Stars...Averaging 20 and 10 on a playoff team crippled with injury doesn't cut it anymore, you have to have elite athletism and lead the league in highlight reel dunks while putting up numbers for a lottery bound team...we have all crowned Griffin the next big thing, the savior of our lock out looming league...and I ask why all this love Griffin...
Eye popping dunks are nothing new, great stats on a bad team are nothing fresh and original...haven't we been here before...haven't we seen all the highlights and experienced this type of hype before...if it wasn't enough to vault you to the highest ranks of respectability before what's changed, besides the economic failures of a stagnant league in professional sports...I feel like Griffin is the athletic equivalent to a prototypical 3D Hollywood film...he's being advertised as the next great blockbuster and when you strip away the superficial wrapping you'll see it's just another bad movie with great graphics...Blake Griffin is like the Transformers, sure we love the Graphics, explosions and looking at Megan Fox, but deep down its an average movie with lots of hype surrounding it...Blake Griffin is amazing to watch, fun to cheer for and great for the league in general, my only problem is he isn't the 1st guy to come around and drop jaws year one, and making him an All Star, face of the leAgue type is unbelievably premature and I'm shocked by the coaches(with encouragement from Stern I believe) voted Blake in over Zbo, LA and Tony Parker...the young and upcoming stars have always had to wait their turn but no not Blake Griffin...my question is why...the answer is likely " stop hating on Blake Griffin"...oh well I digress...
LOL, So Blake Griffin is the Michael Bay of the NBA...thats pretty damn funny
To me, the only award that should given based on wins, is the MVP award. Duncan getting in showed how flawed the voting is by the coaches. Lamarcus Aldrige getting snubbed was ridiculous. The entire team belongs in a hospital bed, and he has somehow kept them afloat.
*slow clap.....speeding up.......standing ovation
If the Clippers finish 30 and 52, add another lottery pick and then suck in 2012(very likely) what will we think of the Golden Child Griffin, what if he never makes the playoffs in Los Angeles or gets an 8th seed two years down the road only to be swept...I just find it amazing we've all pre ordered our Blake Griffin Hall of Fame tickets already, he hasn't played one full season, and to boot it's not like LA is any good...its not like the Clippers are in 5th place out west and challenging the Lakers for superiority in the Staples center...I think we're falling for the hype, the trailer has us expecting the movie is going to be great and it very well may but we haven't seen the movie yet have we...we got these very few clips that amaze us but the film is incomplete...I'm expecting lots of irrational Griffinites to minus me for asking the question...Why so much Griffin, so soon...I mean even Michael had to wait his turn...
Right now, I'd argue Griffin is the best power forward to come in the game since Kemp in terms of flash. You can't argue he's made people care about the Clippers.
The Clippers could make the playoff this year
You want to know why there's so much hype around Blake Griffin? Because he's putting up better numbers than either BronBron or Durant did as rookies (granted he's a little older). Because if Kevin Love wasn't around he'd have put up the longest double double streak in a LONG time. Because like it or not athleticism and dunking are a huge part of the game and a part that people find exciting; and he does that better than anyone else in the league right now. Because if you look at the improvement since he entered the college you see that the sky is the limit and he *could* be one of the top 5 players in the league in a couple years. If none of this makes sense to you then I don't know what to tell you but I WILL say that I don't think there "annointing him the new golden boy" I think they're trying to put him up there with the other big names, the Lebrons and the Durants because the NBA is ACHING to have a league with the recognition of the Jordans, Birds, Johnsons etc of the 80s and 90s.
They said it on PTI. Blake Griifin "puts butts in the seats". People want to see him play. Its been over 40 years since a "rookie" put up numbers like this. I bet hes going to rip the rim off the backboard in the dunk contest. I do think that Tony Parker should have made it in his place though. The allstar game is always boring as christ. I really dont believe most of yall get this excited about it. Blake Griffin is the most dominant ginger since Mark Eaton.
The guys putting up about 23-13-4 on a nightly basis on a team that is still pretty young. You say they shouldn't pick favorites, but put the 12 best players in, but in all honesty, what player have been better then Blake? Let alone 12 others? Just because a team is more relevant doesn't mean they deserve to have their players in because their stats are somehow not as "skewed" as players on bad teams. That's just ridiculous.
He is an exiting Pf...but he's no Garnett or Duncan...he doesn't make the Clippers a championship contender because he lacks the defense and low post offense it takes to win in the playoffs...he needs a Lebron James, Kobe Bryant or D Wade type superstar next him...I feel Gordon is a tier below Wade and he has been phenomenal...Blake can't do it by himself and likely needs a very good pg and Superstar Wing scorer to make the Clippers complete...
So players like Chris Bosh, Steve Nash, Amare, and many others can't be in it now because they aren't complete all around players? And if theres one thing we've learned over the past history of basketball it's that one player doesn't just do it alone. Now so more then ever teams need more good players because the talent in the NBA is ridiculous.
To stick with your lame analogy - it's not just one trailer we've seen, it's like ten different ones and each one is more awesome than the last. This kid is a blockbuster and you're the boring film critic that's decided beforehand that he doesnt like all the hype so he bashes the film. Get over the analytical nonsense and just enjoy the show.
"I mean even Michael had to wait his turn..."
FYI- After his rookie season, MJ was already one of the most famous players in the league. Every kid wanted to be like the man who could seemingly fly. He didnt have to wait for anything ( and just to be clear, Im not saying Griffin is anything like MJ or will ever be).
The only thing coming too soon, is your back lash.
I can see your point..maybe..on him having to wait his turn to be crowned anything. But, how can you deny his talent? He isn't just a dunking machine, the kid can flat out play. Have you seen his post moves? His Blake Shake is reminscent of the Dream Shake and he also is a very good passer who can handle the ball as well.
I ask you, why are you expecting so much from a rookie? When was the last time a rookie carried a team? All things considered, I think he is carying that team pretty damn well when you look at what they have done since their 1-13 start. I saw a stat when the Bulls were playing the Clippers a couple of days ago. Against the top 5 teams in the league, the Celtics are 6-1, the Heat, Bulls, and Lakers had losing records. The Clippers are 4-3.
He is doing his part. Like I said, I am not arguing your argument about the media crowning him and his All Star nod, but why knock his abilities?
You are right Scarecrow, you do have some good points. However, while Blake Griffin might not be Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett or LeBron James, his play this year has made him an elite PF. He has flat out beasted on people and his rookie year numbers are flat out impressive. Yes, he is being slurped on by some fans and ESPN for his highlight dunks, but his numbers and play has been rock solid. Not only that, but he has seemed to be getting better as the season progresses. I had him in my All-Star picks over Kevin Love, just because I feel he is a flat out better player.
One thing I also believe however, is that LaMarcus Aldridge is better than both Love and Griffin at this current time. That is why I feel Andre Miller had every right to say what he did. What Griffin did to him was a punk move, and in the end Andre got the bad end of the deal being suspended. Things like these make it seem like Griffin is kind of getting the Golden Boy standard. The one thing you are right on in my mind is that Griffin more than likely will not be able to carry a team on his own. He has yet to display the defensive prowess of some of the better big men and he more than likely will need a considerable amount of help to get the Clippers to the next level.
My thing is, just because LeBron and some others didn't make the All-Star team as rookies, it does not make it right. LeBron all in all should have been an All-Star, and to be honest, Griffin's numbers are even more impressive than those of LeBron as a rookie. Albeit, LeBron was coming out of HS, but Griffin is putting up numbers any veteran PF should be striving towards. Also, I do not think the fans were responsible for this one, as the coaches more than likely do not give in to the whims of the fans. Have yet to hear a voter fraud conspiracy in what the coaches voted, and I think many of them have been very impressed by Mr. Griffin. So Crow, you are not a fool, and he did very well break the mold of what we have seen in quite a while, but their is a method to his madness. While Michael Bay makes big budget movies with amazing effects, he still sucks. Griffin on the other hand, has some credibility to his name in my mind, he is getting better and better. Also, if Kevin Love has an argument with his numbers, Griffins are just as good I feel, as he shoots a better percentage from the field (and who cares about 3 point % when the person shoots 52% from the field). I feel bad that LaMarcus didn't make it, and I support Andre in his statements, but it was honestly a toss up between Griffin, Love and LA.
I'm not making an argument that he should or should'nt be in the Game...my point is why can we pick and Choose between putting a fan favorite or role player on good teams(Allen, Garnett, Duncan and Bosh) over true All Star types...guys like Randolph, Aldridge, Gay, Granger, Josh Smith, Iguadola and Bogut could be all stars...Tony Parker is a borderline All star...the fans, coaches and commissioner are all so fickle in our criteria for All Star selection, no way should the Eastern Conference All Stars be 7 players from two teams Celtics and Heat...Lebron, Wade, Pierce and Rondo are the only worthy of an All Star appearance...them getting in is so circumstantial and flawed...Why is the 2nd best Center in the East playing in the game...How are 3 top notch small forwards left out the conversation(Gay, Granger, Iguadola) for struggling with young and inexperienced teammates...Gay is leading the league in game winners, Granger is league leading scorer and Iggy is a stat stuffing dunk ar-teast....all 3 would make the All Star game a lot more exiting, and they are deserving...Throw Josh Smith over Iggy because of The early season slump and Injury if you wish...but how are Ray Allen, Garnett and Both in the game...if Stern wants the best product and hopes the Nba to thrive In this tough economy he'll put out the top talent from around the entire Nba...Teams from certain markets aren't even featured this all star weekend...that is a huge problem....
Right now, Griffin is a top 20 player
dont u guys want griffen in it
hes gannna make 1000000000x more fun to watch then aldrige will
LA shudda made it over duncan but i dnt mind seeing duncan start just b/c hes the BEST PF TO EVER PLAY THE GAME
Tyreke Evans averaged 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Solid numbers considering being a rookie. Want to know why his numbers dropped? People are actually planning for him now, and they know his overall game which means he has to change it. Thats why he's doing so poor. Now when I see Griffin, he's a cut abov the rest because he's been around NBA basketball depsite being injured. Athletic? yes, a beast? Sure. But you guys fail to realize, Blake Griffin is going wild on a team that doesn't have many consistent options. And quite honestly nobody is trying to send him to the floor for a message, or even working on locking him down. This Blake Griffin hype is out of control, and the amount of people on his nuts is insane. As far as I'm concerned, BG is just an explosive dunker with incomplete post moves and sub par defense. Honestly everybody was high on Amare when he first came in dunking on everybody, BG is no different.
The kid is having an amazing rookie year and deserves to be on the ALL STAR team because he is a STAR the definition of STAR is some one who is DAZZLINGLY skilled. Does he not dazzle us?
I'm actually a huge fan of the guy, loved him in college when he was a red headed rebounding machine...I love his motor, I love his aggression, I absolutely love this guys entire package of skills...I'm taking a stand against the hype machine that creates views like " Andre Miller is a hater because he feels Blake hasn't proven more than This guy are that guy"...when Miller is right, but at the same time vets should not get this automatic nod every year...Yes Duncan is a big part of the Spurs great record but he is not an All Star...that Eastern Squad is a slap in the face to 10 other Eastern Conference fan bases...Where is an Indiana Pacer, Where is a Milwaukee Buck, where is a Memphis Grizzly player or 2...where are the " Stars of the entire league" that Stern is selling on Nba Tv...there is nothing Amazing about the All Star Game accept for Blake Griffin, Lebron, Westbrook, Rose and company...the East vs West game is not the game it could be because half the rosters are hand picked veterans nursing injuries and uninterested in the game anyway...I was actually happy Blake got in the game because I'd like to see him posterize Lebron or Howard...or vice versa....
No one will ever be happy with any All Star game selections. There will always be deserving players left off in every sport. When you say that certain markets aren't even being represented in the game I hope you aren't suggesting the NBA go the route of MLB and put in a rep from every team. That whole notion is a joke.
This isn't the old days when a kid solely roots for his hometown team and players. The Bulls went years without an All Star and it didn't bother me one bit. The All Star games aren't what they used to be anyway with us being able to watch these guys any time we want.
Simply put Griffin is better than LA. Aldrige just happens to have a better team around him.
Scarecrow have u not seen Blake Griffin play? The guy gets better every game and is already one of the best PF's in the game. Everyone talks about his defense like every rookie has great defense. You sound like one of the ppl that think ppl just like him for his dunks watch one clipper game and you'll see he's much more than that with developing post moves an improving jumper and excellent passing ability. Considering how he did in college and what he's doing now the sky is literally the limit. The Clippers have beaten teams like the Lakers, Bulls an heat thanks to him and he and his teammates can only improve
Griffin is better than Aldridge now too. I see your point though NBA and all pro leagues pick favorites. They talk about guys they like based on personality more than more talented guys. I just think Griffin is the truth and he might have exceeded what was expected of him at this point. A lot of people said 15 and 10 would be good for him. Thats an off night for Griff. He is a workaholic who will keep getting better. I think Reggie Miller was a great shooter, but I also feel the rest of his game was extremely weak and he is compared to Ray Allen who honestly is a much more skilled and talented player. To go along with being a better shooter even based on percentages than Reggie.
I'm pretty damn sure if you replace Aldridge with Blake Griffin on the Trailblazers roster, the Blazers would be a much better team than they already are.
This is a dumb thread coming from a guy who's eating his words.
Scarecrow posted that Griffin would be the next Kenyon Martin. He NEVER thought Griffin would be this good and just can't stand it. During the pre-season, Scarecrow said Aminu had shown more improvement than Griffin. Look it up. This is a stupid thread.
Anybody who's watched Griffin just a few games and not just on ESPN highlights knows he's the REAL deal. He's not just a dunker or high flyer. He can dribble. He can pass. He can read double and triple teams. His IQ is terrific. He plays with focus. He plays the game hard and with passion... His motor is unbelievable. He has flair that's genuwine and not forced... Like it's all natural. He's humble, yet acts like he's done all of this before. People talk about how he had a season to see the game and get better, but I honestly believe he'd have been this good LAST season.
This kid is the real deal, so all you fools hating need to chill out, sit back and enjoy the show.
Scarecrow, do you even watch basketball? Cause sound pretty ignorant... I love this arguement when people say he is only putting up numbers because he is on a bad team but in reality that arguement is irrelevent in blakes case he has managed to put up great numbers against great competition while shooting a solid percentage.
"And quite honestly nobody is trying to send him to the floor for a message, or even working on locking him down"
Kayjay... Are you not watching the games? Griffin gets fouled hard every single game. Did you not see Boozer just take him out the other game vs the Bulls? Problem is, he keeps popping right back up.
When did I deny the fact I compared Griffin to a young Kenyon Martin coming out of college, its easy to go back and point out when someone was wrong about something...u sound like a hater waiting to drop that nugget of information...again this is not me bashing Blake's talent, I always thought he was a great rebounding leaper that could impact the game year one, I just thought he'd play better interior defense(he has the tools) and that Baron and Eric Gordon would be the 1st and 2nd options, also Kaman is gone and there are no other offensive options(no 6th man or any bench scorers period)...the offense is run through and around Blake Griffin, no one saw that happening this soon, and I'll take the heat for going against the hail Griffin bandwagon...I actually will go out on a limb and make this Statement, Griffin will ultimately tailor his game after Lebron James...with a deep crop of Pf's the Clippers could go big and slide Blake to Sf, the only difference between the two is Lebron's ball handling, vision, outside shot...if you look at Blake's entire demeanor on the court (minus the show boating on the sidelines) it is very similar to James...I can see Blake being like Lebron without the elite skillset...but Blake will always get more rebounds and play a bit more inside then outside...
We're talking about Blake Griffin getting too much hype during his first season when LeBron James was dubbed "THE KING" and being called the next Michael Jordan while in HIGH SCHOOL. Remember? LeBron was the "Chosen One" before he even played an NBA basketball game.
Ask anybody from the 2007 high school graduating class... Griffin wasn't always this good. He didn't have the hype of an OJ Mayo, Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley or Eric Gordon... Or even a Kevin Love. He had to work his way up.
He could've entered the draft after his freshman season at Oklahoma, BUT he stayed because he said he wanted to learn to go hard during every single drill and get better. He didn't chase the money. He wanted to be GREAT in the NBA.
He was sidelined the entire year during his first season and had to wait his turn/watch from the sidelines. The reports were that he busted his ass... He rarely took days off and took his rehab as seriously as a person could. He studied game film. He was in the training facility everyday. He didn't go home like Greg Oden did. He didn't feel sorry for himself. The dude worked his ass off.
And now all of that's paying off... I don't understand the hate.
"We're talking about Blake Griffin getting too much hype during his first season when LeBron James was dubbed "THE KING" and being called the next Michael Jordan while in HIGH SCHOOL. Remember? LeBron was the "Chosen One" before he even played an NBA basketball game."
I agree with you, but it's not like LeBron didn't deserve the hype.
