Just an idea, not the answer to the salary cap issues. What if each team had a limit of how many contracts of a certain ammount of money they can have on the roster. For example.. what if teams were limited to having just 1 player under contract @ 20 mil/yr.,3 players @ 15 mil/yr, 5 players @ 10 mil/yr, and unlimited 5 mil/yr and below contracts with a maximum allowable team payroll of 60 mil annuall. Also, have just strictly contracts of either 5 and under, 10,15, and 20 mil/yr. This would make it a lot easier to calculate salary caps and give all teams a chance to compete. Add in certain qualifiers like a player must be in the league 4 years before they can qualify for a max contract of 15 mil/yr, and 6 years (when most guys hit their prime) to qualify for a max of 20 mil/yr. Make contract lengths no longer than 4 years. Also, to help teams retain stars you can give them the leverage of offering bonuses based on tenure. For example, if a player gives a team a tenure of at least 6 years he can qualify for a tenure bonus of an extra up to 2.5 mil annual bonus (10 mil total over a 4 year contract). If he stays with a team 8 yrs, he can qualify for an up to 3.75 mil annual bonus (15 mil over 4 years). The tenure bonus wouldn’t count towards the salary cap. Just some ideas, will go into more explanation… please offer your suggestions.

I like the idea that top players can get the big money soon to save them potentially being on it when they are well past their prime. Uniform 4 year deals in line with the length of the rookie deals again makes a lot of sense and would mean that players can get the 3rd contract in their mid to late 20’s and keeps players on their toes as they don’t have the extra security of a guaranteed possible 6 year deal.

I don’t know how options could work on deals which are 4years maximum in length as teams would surely not want a player option in year 3 where say a franchise level guy could opt out after only two years. Maybe player options could only be in say year 4 unless the player was say over 30 by the time of say his 3rd year or the deal was below a certain amount. This could stop smaller teams losing franchise level players but also allow veterans to sign deals which give them and their teams flexability.

If the owners could get options in their favour then this would be a hugely in their favour and if the players conceeded this then a more favourable revenue split might come their way.

The other idea that could work is that each team can have one exempt salary counting towards the cap especially if a hard cap came in. This could protect franchise players and assist the bigger teams whilst trying to give the smaller teams a more even playing field and could perhaps stop the gathering of talent on just a few teams as is potentially going to increase in the next year or so. Or even maybe a player becomes exempt after so many years on the roster so it’s almost a variation on the "Bird rule".
