surveParticipantLOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Clippers have waived forward Ryan Gomes using the NBA’s amnesty provision. He averaged 2.3 points and 13.3 minutes in 32 games last season in a diminished role on the team. Gomes was in his second season with the Clippers after previously playing for Minnesota and Boston.
Gomes had 2 years remaining on his contract at $4 mil per year. Why use amnesty on him? I am not an expert on the contractual side, so please help me out here. It seems like a waste of amnesty, but like I said, again, I am not well versed in this.

LerinErinParticipantIt has to with only being able to amnesty guys who were on roster before last cba. Saves them a bit in caphit

rhamnlacsonParticipantmight be a positive rather than a negative on the part of gomes career depending on what team and what kind of situation he ends up with on his new team

nick5354ParticipantI am confused now with this amnesty. Are teams only allowed the use this for a one time thing, is it once a year or every few years? Or can you no longer use it when the off season stops?

220ParticipantThe Amnesty is once in the current contract (collective bargaining agreement – CBA).

Brew Meister SmithParticipantI believe each team can use the provision only once within the duration of this new CBA. And I also believe the contract being amnestied has to have been signed under the old CBA (correct me if I’m wrong). But remember in another season or two there will be fewer old contracts, and the worst ones will be long gone. So the amnesties won’t be for such outlandish contracts, but used as a means to clear up little bits of cap space.

TRC1991ParticipantI mean the only other option for the Clippers would be to wait a couple years then amnesty Caron Butler but this seems like a good play here

220ParticipantThat wouldn’t work because Caron wasn’t signed until after the lockout, he would’ve needed to be on the roster prior to the lockout.
I hope Gomes goes somewhere he gets a chance to play. He was a pretty effective role player until last year when he was marginalized due to their acquisitions.

B-ball fanParticipantI have always liked Gomes. He was fun to watch in Boston, where he played pf and scored a lot in the post.

surveParticipantok, Gomes is amnestied off the OLD CBA (2005)? so the Clips still have an amnesty left under the NEW CBA (2011)? or is it a situation where you use it or lose it? sorry if this is a stupid question, like I said, I am ignorant to the contractual by-laws. would not a buyout be better? I mean surely someone would claim Gomes off waivers…I would think. Or is that too much of a risk? I mean I dont disagree with the amnesty of Gomes, just trying to understand the thought process behind it.

Brew Meister SmithParticipantAs far as I know the amnesties are only for the old CBA. If you sign a bad contract under the new CBA you should have known better.
I imagine in 5 years when they do the whole thing again, an Amnesty would come back as part of the deal

providencefriars1Participantsad day in Friartown… hope he gets another opportunity in the league

Game760ParticipantHe was amnestied because clippers don’t want to hit that tax line. Also Suns wouldn’t do a sign and trade for Hill
So to stay under they had to cut Gomes out.His contract is 4 mill exp not 2 years. So ultimately
His 4 mill being cut will help them get Hill at mini midlevel and sign a Vet FA(Big) to fill their roster and still stay under 70 mill tax line.0- Posted on: Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:29am #697643
surveParticipantthank you for clarifying that, IDK why I am getting negged for asking a question. I honestly just thought teams used amnesties on bad contracts…but I forgot about the Hill acq and making room for him.
