high floorParticipantLast night Russell Westbrook became the first player in 19 years to post a triple double by halftime against the Lakers. The last one to post such a feat was Kevin Johnson of the Phoenix Suns back in 1997.
In addition, Westbrook now has 18 triple doubles on the year which ties Magic Johnson for the most 3×2’s in the past 50 years since the NBA/ABA merger. Awesome stuff Westy

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantI’ve watched a lot of Westbrook this year and no knock against him but I would rather have a pg that doesn’t turn the ball over at the highest rate for his position and second over all players. Some of the turnovers are just bad. Momentum is everything in the playoffs. I believe his turnovers will lose them more games than his 3×2 win them in the playoffs.

MatosParticipantNot downplaying Russ as this is a truly remarkable feat, but why are we not recognizing Oscar Robertson and his 41 triple doubles he had 55 years ago? We cant just say over the past 50 years and exclude the man. Thats disrespectful.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI thought that Russ BROKE Magic’s post-merger record…
Oh well.
Fivethirtyeight just wrote an article the other day that Russell Westbrook is having the BEST triple double season in NBA history when ADJUSTED for pace.
The Big O played in a juiced season when he averaged a triple double.
Magic’s teams played at a frenetic pace, too.

MatosParticipantOne of the most significant things we recognize Big O for is when he averaged a triple double. I totally get that the competition was not as crazy as it is now but he still played against Wilt, Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Bob Cousy, Hal Greer, Bob Petit, etc. And its still a feat that wont be replicated for the forseeable future. Its like taking away Wilt’s 100 point game. Yea he didnt play many elite players outside of Bill Russell but no one will ever mirror 100 points.

NBAjunkie81Participant"the Big O" Robertson played against "Bums"……….. And I’m not criticizing anyone’s Opinion….. None of know anything until we learn it but I just want to List the 1st & 2nd team All NBA for the 1964/65′ Season…… That’s the Year Oscar led the NBA in Win Share……
1st Team All NBA ///// 2nd Team
Elgin Baylor ////// Wilt Chamberlain
Jerry Lucas ////// Hal Greer
Oscar Robertson ///// Gus Johnson
Bill Russell /////// Sam Jones
Jerry West ////// Bob Pettit
These guys are ALL Hall of Fame players………. In Addition, Future Hall of Famers like Willis Reed, Tommy Hiensohn, Nate Thurmond, K.C. Jones & Walt Bellamy to name Just a few did NOT even make the All NBA teams that year……………
Also, there were Only 9 NBA teams back then, so the Top teams features not 1 or 2 Stars but 4 or 5 …….. There is some myth that the 1960’s NBA featured Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell & a couple hundred 6’1” White Guys from Indiana……… There were Actually MORE 7 footers in the 60’s than Today & they were NOT white guys…… look it up…….
It’s just Not true…… Imagine if we Shrunk today’s NBA down from 30 teams to 10 teams……. now imagine how many Great players would be on Each team……
Now I agree, the population is Larger today so we have More great players to choose from…… but NBA teams of the 60’s Like Bill Russell’s Celtics & Wilt’s 67′ Sixers could compete w/ Any Title winning teams of ANY Era…….
That said Russ is a BEAST…….. And the reason Oscar Avg a Triple Double is b/c back then they played at a MUCH faster pace……. meaning MORE OFfensive Possessions….. so if you adjust Westbrooks #’s for the 1960’s pace he would be Right there w/ the "Big O"…………….
