First off, I want to talk about Rudy Gorbert. Boy, the improvements he’s made since last season are incredible – it’s night & day. To me, he looks like a young Roy Hibbert — a great defensive presence; a big body who can’t shoot. I thought he wasn’t going to be anything special last year, but now he looks like he could be a solid starting center in the NBA. Props to the Utah Jazz for developing him well.

The most polarizing player in this summer league is Dante Exum. There were legitimate questions on how he’d be able to play against this higher competition. While he’s had trouble with conditioning today, he has impressed me with his floor presence and his elite quickness. To me, he’s a more natural point guard than Trey Burke. But will obviously play more 2-guard because of Burke’s size. Great news for Jazz fans is that they look like they can coexist in the same backcourt.

After one summer league game it is too early to tell but Exum did look good in spirts, Burks has proven he can play and will get minutes, depending on how fast Exum progresses will probably determine what happens with Burks, I think eventually Exum will start at the point and Burks at the 2 but to start with Burke will probably start at the one. I can se the coaches keeping Burks as the 6th man and starting Exum at the 2 but I think that is up in the air. Reports are that Hood has shot the ball well in practice but he didn’t shoot well last night, if he develops consistency he could get a lot of time. The senerio I would like to see happen is for Exum to play well enough to take the starting job from Burke and for Hood to play well enough to allow Hayward to go back to playing the 2, (the 2 is his best position), Burks as the 6th man and Burke backing up Exum, Gobert backing up Favors and Kanter and providing a defensive force in the middle. Hopefully this can happen by the end of the year.

I have to admit i was a little nervousness about Exum because so little was known about him. But he showed in a small sample that he’s got all the tools to be special.

Gobert has been a huge surprise with his play last season, and looks much improved this year especially with the title project when he was drafted.

I think Burks stays in the 6th man roll where he’s flourished.

I watched some summer league and Exum is one cool customer.  He’s so fluid tall and long for a PG, not to mention his explosivness and quickness are obvious.  He’ll definately have to work on his jumper, but all the signs point to him being the real deal.

Utah’s absolutely loaded – it’s just amazing how much talent they’ve accrued through the draft – I’m blown away when I see how poorly most teams end up drafting and then you look at a team like Utah who’s got great picks outside the top 10 (Hawyard, Burks).

Their young core of Exum, Burks, Burke, Hayward, Kanter all through the draft and Favors via trade is impressive.  If Exum can really push the team, there’s no reason they’re not in the playoffs this coming year, even as they’re in the west they have incredible talent throughout their team.  Outside of Cleveland, Utah right now is the youngest and most exciting team on the rise in the league.

I really wasn’t too high on Gobert last year, but I really think the guy is going to be able to rebounding and block shots at a high rate in the league.

My expectations were that of a modern day Manute Bol, maybe a guy who drops 6/6/3.5, but I think his ceiling, as a rebounder especially, will be higher than initially gauged. In games where he logged 15-25 minutes or so, last season, he rebounded and guarded the rim pretty well.

He only topped 15 minutes in 9 games this season, but his numbers were as follows…

    20.8 mpg – 4.2 ppg 7.6 rpg 1.55 bpg

He’s really in a good spot, right now. He can learn and go against two big strong guys every day in practice ( Kanter, and Favors) and not have to field too big of a load while he still gains experience.

he still needs to try and keep out of foul trouble and make his free throws. he wont be able to stay on the court in a real game before then.

Jazz 2014-2015 lineup: Burke, Exum, Hayward, Favors, Kanter. Burks will likely come off the bench as a sixth man. Then I think midseason Coach Snyder will want to really frustrate opponents and try a bigger backcourt of Exum and Burks. Using Hood as the sixth man. Of course this change does not mean low minutes for Burke. He will still be used in fourth quarter in clutch situations.

Jazz should start Gobert, and trade away Kanter before he starts asking for $60million.

Burke, Burks, Hayward, Favors, Gobert can start.  Exum is the 6th Man, then Novak is there for shooting and Evans is there for defense.  A good and young roster, plus whatever they can get for Kanter.  Maybe Kanter for John Henson, or Kanter for Anthony Bennett, or Kanter for Derrick Williams.
