WinterSoldierParticipantHe is starting to look like a steal at the 27th pick. Last night vs. Lakers 16 pts, 9 rebs, 3 blks with 5 turnovers in 25 min. Weds vs. Clippers 4 pts, 12 rebs, 5 blks 1 turnover in 20 min. I love seeing him aggressively going after rebounds and blocks. He still is raw but his potential is much higher than I was expecting.

Forte IVParticipantI already thought of him as a steal at 27. Was seriously surprised he fell down that far especially with his wing span and the fact he’s only 20 or 21. I thought for sure a team would have taken him in the 15-20 range just based on potential alone.

llperezI’ve watched a couple of his games including these last 2 vs the LA teams. Huge potential. BUt he is also getting scrap buckets on broken plays. Lakers interior defense is really soft as is, I don’t think he had any plays where he actually beat his man. Just being in the right place at the right time. But great athlete with length obviously.

JunkYardDogParticipantHe fell down during the draft because of several little things that generate a bad “wave” (whereas a player like byombo was surfing the good “wave” till david stern shook his hand…). Lots of HUGE mistakes have been made before the draft by journalists or scouts about him. For example people were talking about his lack of strength (upper body especially) whereas they didn’t enlight the fact he had (and still has…) good shoulders allowing him to add muscles without too much difficulties and rather naturally.
But most of all Gobert is FRENCH AND TALL… wich drew false easy lazy comparison with ajinca. I had to explain how bad this comparison was very often before the draft (and several times here with posters who haven’t seen him play). Gobert and Ajinca were two different kind of prospects at the same age (experience, playing time in france, shoulders, mental approach of the game and of training, fear of contacts, lack of toughness and confidence…).
The most ironic thing is Ajinca finally turn to be a major piece (controlling the paint in defense, offensive rebounds, BS…) of european national success for french team … several weeks ago. But nobody would have imagined that before the draft.
All in all he fell during the draft (and maybe it’s good for him) in the jazz hands (a franchise willing to develop young prospects, giving them playing time and time to develop). He should become quickly a good complementary piece in the paint for favors and kanter.

phila9012ParticipantConsidering he was supposed to be a few years away from making an impact, the jazz should feel good about the pick. Big men take time to develop, so in 2 or 3 years he should be a solid player for the Jazz and probably be considered a steal.

HitsterParticipantHe looks promising and had a good summer league too, the Jazz were prepared to make Favours and Kanter wait and they will not rush Rudy along but if he does fill out, he’ll look a great defensive prospect as you cannot teach size.

JoeWolf1A steal, for sure, but in all honesty, I think he’s going to be a lot like Shawn Bradley. A very good rim protector and shot blocker, but I don’t see him being an offensive threat. It’s early, but I’m not jumping on the Gobert wagon, just yet, but I do think he has what it takes to be a good rim protector and role player down the line…still, a good value at 27 where most players chosen don’t end up doing much.
