I remember towards the end of last year after Rudy Gay went down, Memphis really started to play tough defense and smash mouthed ball down low. I wasn’t sure if they had enough scoring for the playoffs but in round one they upset the Spurs. Gasol and Randolph proved they could handle the bulk of the scoring load and The Griz had an identity. Everyone knew their roles and they played like it. A few friendly bounces and who knows how far they could have gone? Conely can penetrate and break down defenses and has become a very solid PG on a good playoff team. Mayo provides the same type of scoring punch (in nearly identical ways) that Rudy Gay does… but Mayo will be much cheaper to retain for the same type of game.

After watching Miami start last year as a .500 ball club over the first 20 games we all know how important defined roles and chemistry are. The Lakers have the best SG in the world on their team but what have we been hearing all season and playoffs… “get the ball down low”. “Gasol and Bynum need more touches”. As quickly as Kobe can shoot you into a game, he can shoot you right out of one. Going to big men who can MAKE their free throws late in games is the safest possible thing you can do to secure victory.

There were many posters wondering aloud if The Griz should have traded Rudy Gay for assets last offseason. The Griz seemed to play steadier ball without his shot selection. This is not to say that Rudy Gay is not a good player, its just that when you have Gasol and Randolph as your post options your better off going inside and having Gay as your third option… which he’s not accustomed too. Going inside also tends to get the opposing team into the penalty earlier and opposing bigmen in foul trouble. In addition, if the other teams bigs are constantly defending your own bigs all game, they are less likely to be a threat on the other end because they are more fatigued. The ONLY Big Man in the league this doesn’t apply to is Howard, Dwight. Dudes a freak.

This season Gay took 16.5 shots per game for 19ppg on 45% shooting. Thats not particularly great offense… In the playoffs Gay took 19 shots a game for 19 ppg on 42% shooting. As can happen with volume shooters… they take contested shots, off balanced shots,… AKA Bad Shots. Your looking for the easest shot possible every trip down the court.. but its nice to have a “closer” late in clocks or with the game on the line, which I think Gay can do just as well as anyone.

When you take jumpers and can’t hit at the same rate your post players are, your hurting your team if you don’t get to the line. Rudy Gay doesn’t get to the line enough… but sometimes a team needs a player who can create his own shot.

This brings me to the trade. I was thinking the Sixers trade Iggy for Rudy Gay. The salaries are within 125% so the contracts can be swapped. The players are 2 years apart in age so your not losing much in “youth”… however Iggy has only 2 years left on his deal with the 2nd season being a player option.

The Sixers get Gay who could thrive as their go to scorer. Lou WIlliams led Phlly in scoring this season coming off the bench as a 6th man at 14.9ppg. The Sixers need scoring… and Gay can help provide that. Gay’s style of game should mesh well with the rest of the Sixers starting lineup and open up more defined roles with Evan Turner and Iggy no longer playing redundant roles.

Memphis owner just declared after the playoffs that the Griz “are not in the luxury tax business”. Cutting 2 years off the length of a max contract is a start in the right direction for thrift conscious spenders. Iggy also compliments the Griz starting lineup more effectively. He won’t mind pounding the ball inside to the big fellas and playing lockdown defense going the other way. He can hit open shots and really just do a bit of everything. Jack of all trades but master of none… other then that blinding athleticism of his.

I felt that the only way the laker-magic trade that was gaining traction a few months back could happen was if memphis got involved.

    lakers get howard, and randolph

    orlando gets bynum and gay

memphis get pau gasol and turkoglu, earl clark

of course this can be tweaked with picks or other players but as is, it gives each team quality players

and a chance to win and all three teams could use a change. i think memphis deserve a quality sf back but

neither lakers or magic have one. maybe artest instead of clark, but who would want that timebomb, but if he was focused with tony allen they could defend anyone.

I like the idea of Gay for Igoudala, though I could also see Granger for Gay.

I been thinking this also but I dont think you will get equal vaule from trading a young rudy gay for one player.Talent ,draft picks and depth they have to find a team that can give them all 3 of those and maybe lets say the pistons can.

Stuckey, daye, prince, and a draft pick for gay and pondexter

Prince is on his way out the pistons are trying to clear cap the memphis needs a playoff vet who was once on of the top defenders in the league.Getting rid of Stuckey gives memphis  a different look at pg an attacking look for a team the needs bench scoring badly plus some one who can bring the ball up half court atleast (smh at mayo),and the pistion get to start rebuilding with brandon knight at the point.Daye is the added depth at the sf the added bench scoring.

Im not saying this will be the trade but I think memphis lucked up on gay but just like paul gasol moving on will  be the best thing he doesnt fit.Gaining talent, draft picks, and depth will help memphis now and later. It will really help the pistons haveing a clear first option to help add to rebuilding is a great start. I dont think they would have got a better player liek gay in this draft anyhow.

    Something needs to be done.

getting iggy for rudy would be a fantastic trade imo for the grizz iggy and tony allens lock down d would be amazing on the same team and as mentioned iggy wouldnt mind getting the rock inside too gasol and z bo and it sheds two years off rudys max contract

Gay and Mayo both need to be traded.  Both will be better off elsewhere and the Grizzlies would be better off without them.  The Iggy trade is a good one.

Pulse….dont you think Paul George and Rudy Gay are too similar?

Yea I thought the idea of moving Granger would be to get George to move to the 3 and free up time for the guards the Pacers keep bringing in.

I doubt they trade either one of them being Granger or George.

Yo Harbinger…I love that trade!!!   I am a huge pistons fan and I think Gay would be perfect with Monroe and Knight.  Plus Prince would be a better fit with Zack and Marc.  Great for both teams.

That pistons trade would be highway robbery. Gay for Iggy straight up is a trade I’ve been talking about for a while now and that would benefit both teams. I doubt it will happen but as a Sixers fan I would love to see a go to scorer the caliber of Rudy Gay to come to town.

High way robbery for who?The pistons got rid of billups for stuckey and he hasnt lead them anywhere but to the lottery,I doubt they want to rebuild with prince as a building block  because of his age and with the contracts they handed ben and charlie they are looking to shed some money. So your moving stuckey and prince and draft pick for Rudy gay a young player who was looked at as a franchise player for memphis last summer thats a deal !

If you dont win the lottery then why not trade the pick for gay I dont have them many players in this lottery being better then gay now or in the next 4 years.Memphis will get the depth, and talent they need also.but umm I would be happy for any trade involving picks and more then one player. You see what new york gave for mello? Gay isnt mello but hes far from a ave player hes all star cal.

I live in philly we should rebuild I know the succes of makeing the playoffs would make it hard to just break it up but we should have went into rebuild mode when we got evan but they gave iggy a new contract and still has brands huge contract on the books the sixer managment has been sooo idk if your from philly you know they make the worst choices we could have signed josh smith instead of brand.

No they tried to sign Josh Smith over Brand but since he was a restricted FA the Hawks could match what ever offer he signed. That is why we overpayed for Elton because he was the best unrestricted big man left. He plays hard but coming off those injuries we screwed ourselves by giving him so much money.  I would not be surprised to see him get amnestied this off-season.

The highway robbery would obviously be performed by the Pistons if they would get Gay for Prince and Stuckey. Prince is overpaid and Stuckey is overrated so unless that pick would be in the top 3 it would be nothing close to an even deal. Rudy Gay is an all star caliber player while Prince is an overpayed role player on the down side of his career and Stuckey is a PG who doesn’t set up his teammates.

Philly management has made some terrible choices but I don’t see how you can say to rebuild when they already have been doing that the past 5 years. The core of this team is young so why would you look to get even younger instead of getting a go to scorer as the rest of the core comes into their primes. Holiday and Turner are the future of this team they just need some more help up front if they want to compete with the big boys.

I dont think the hawks would have matched what we gave brand a couple years ago brand will be makeing 17 mil this season you dont think josh smith would have told the sixers to bid.Josh doesnt even want to an ATL.

As i said its hard to start a rebuild now because for once in a long time the sixers have alot of ppl putting faith in their team. The sixers have done a half hearted rebuild for years starting with iggy, then lou, then thad, then brand, then jru, then hawes jodie and turner. I thought after tradeing Iverson we where suppose to rebuild but we were competeing for an playoff berth with andre miller who we would later let walk in free agency. We the sixers lucked up and got turner but some rebuilding job we done.

You could be right about the Josh Smith situation I don’t know what or if they offered him anything at all.

The Sixers are a team on the up and although it doesn’t look like they are going to be a championship team barring a miracle there is no need to rebuild again. Rebuilding in the NBA is difficult and usually relying on ping pong balls to bounce your way and get a Drose or Kevin Durant type player isn’t the best idea. A lot of luck comes into building a champion.
