With so much talk about players possibly returning to college due to the lockout, I wondered if players that are drafted this year would not especially be in a more favourable contract position? Lets take Harrison Barnes and say he declares this year and is drafted say 3rd, I’d guess that if the lockout happened from 1st July then he would not be able to sign his contract until the lockout ended so if it lasted the whole season then his rookie contract would start from 2012-13 season the same as if he was drafted in 2012. So the only benefit he could really have in declaring if a lockout was likely would be being drafted higher this year and thus perhaps getting a slightly higher rookie salary.

With rookie contract options for year’s 3 and 4 being taken up, teams will have taken up 3rd or 4th year options for 2008 or 2009 draftees for next season but if there was a lockout and thus a 4th year option of a 2009 draftee could not be picked up next season then could the last year of their deal be argued as being unpicked up and thus they could be classed as an FA. Imagine if that happened to Blake Griffin for example?

Are probably relative to when the players are actually playing games. When their is a lockout, owners stop paying the players entirely. So, I think the contracts would basically be based on when the players do actually play again. For instance, players in the 3rd year of their deal would still be in the third year of their deal, even without a 2011-12 season. I am also guessing that the option dates would probably be moved accordingly. All guess work here, but trying to use common sense in this situation. Contracts are not voided during a lockout, but when their is a lockout, the players are not getting paid by their teams, which I think would mean they are not using a year in their given contracts, if that makes sense.

If rookie contracts rolled over then wouldn’t all other contracts so for instance the Celtic’s contracts could roll on into 2012-13 and the 2012 FA rush would move to 2013.

I’d guess that if a new CBA was agreed after a lockout then all these issues would have to be addressed.
