So… There’s an on-going argument about Rondo vs Westbrook chasing numbers.

    Here’s my take…

Rondo has always been active on the boards; that’s nothing new. He grabbed 19 while at Kentucky. The difference between he an Westbrook is that, Westbrook makes it obvious that he’s chasing numbers and if you don’t think so, watch his teammates around the paint. Also, Rondo does not care about scoring. The outlier is that Rondo does not care about scoring. He will not give you a solid 10 points to catch a triple-double. Again, on stats alone, 10 10 10 is nothing to acquire for Rondo. If he doesn’t care to score 10 points that’s the indicator of not chasing numbers.

the only people who Say rondo is chasing numbers, at least with the Pels, are those who are not watching the games.

Rondo chases wins. Not stats. That simple. He just goes hard 24/7 and does anything needed to get a W. Russ WANTS the W, but he he wants the proof hes great that much more.

Rondos lack of a jump shot make him force assist opportunities more than your average player which can make it seem like he is chasing numbers.

Triple-doubles are becoming more frequent for two primary reasons:

    1. More 3FGAs means more longer rebounds

    2. More 3FGAs from bigs means the man guarding the shot taker is much farther from the hoop, putting him on equal ground with the guards, whereas bigs used to be closer to the hoop and in better position to snatch the ball before it gets to the perimeter

The rise in triple-doubles is directly tied to increased rebounding numbers for guards, but these boards are inflated due to the recent evolution of shot selection and analytics.

Bottom line is it’s less impressive and less significant.

Rondo has been know to hunt for assist in past. But the difference between him and Westbrook is that Rondo knows how to play Point. He knows how to slow the game down and execute the offense or he get into the paint and create shots/easy baskets.

Anyone who has watched Rondo over the years knows that he does not chase the trip dub.  When he played with the Celts he was an amzing facilitator and worked tirelessly to set up his teammates.  He played very well with other stars.  Rondo is a smart, calculating, winner, who like Westbrook has a huge ego.  Rondo unfortunately is abrasive and difficult with coaches and that has hurt his reputation somewhat.  From a fan standpoint I love Rondo, and am a huge fan even though his temper and ego get in the way sometimes.

Westbrook otoh is more athletic, has an incredible motor, NEVER quits, and really cares about his numbers.  I agree with people that say Westbrook hunts for trip dubs.  Just watch him and you can see that he "steals" rebounds from his own teammates.  I didn’t appreciate Carmelo calling out Westbrook for poaching rebounds from him, but it’s probably true.  This leads me to wonder whether Westbrook is really ready to sacrifice his own glory for team wins.  But yeah, Westbrook does hunt for trip dubs.  The amazing thing about Westbrook is that he can get them so easily.  I really admire the guy’s competitive spirit, his motor, and his heart.  If he would just forget about stats and get a touch of Jason Kidd to his game, I think his teams would be more successful.
