Lotto StudParticipantWe cannot play without them. For the most part we as followers focus on the stars or starters of today’s game. I would like to conduct this thread to give recognition to those who are your favorites. The thing is I would like to know who your favorite role player is but he has to have been in the league more than 6 years.
Right now I’m quite sure the consensus choice will be Jamal Crawford which he is a favorite of mine as well but I want to steer away from the "norm".
My favorite role player is Mo Williams. I can go on all day about what I like about Mo but what really stands out to me, is consistency which makes his style of play very serviceable for any team in the NBA.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantHe’s only recently become a role player, Jamal Crawford has been a 6th man for years now, he’s one of the most used players not to start in the entire NBA, I wouldn’t call him a role player in L.A…I like guys like Thad Young as role players because he’s never been treated as anything more than a guy who just plays his part, no matter what that role was that particular game. One game Thad is asked to be the teams top defender, the next he’s asked to be the number one option on offense, most of the time he’s just plugged into any rotation and produces without a play called for him. He’s the definition of the term role player, he can play any role for any team in the NBA

juves4783Participantmanu ginobili has to be one of the top role players of all-time. always brought excitement when he came on the floor. unfortunately (for my nuggets), he was master of the flop and drew a lot of offensive fouls before the new rules changed flopping.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantI’d bring up guys like Robert Horry, Steve Kerr, Sean Elliot, Bruce Bowen and Matt Bonner as true role players for the Spurs before Manu

juves4783Participantginobili has started less than 50% of games played.
you brought up thad young. thad young has started more than 50% of his games. ginobili’s "role" was to score off the bench because he was a liability of defense.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantYou’re right about Manu coming off the bench for most his career but it was only to bolster the Spurs bench which had the likes of Matt Bonner. Manu would play the role of scorer or facilitator whenever needed. I would classify him as a very good role player

Scrooge McDuckParticipantUsually role players don’t make the ALL-NBA team. Manu Ginobili won 3rd Team ALL-NBA in 2008 and 2011.

ThunderHog35ParticipantNick Collison, the last long tenured SuperSonic left from the move to OKC. Steady hard worker, always gives it his all. Not flashy or explosive but does all the dirty work needed to help the team.

rileymcshea3ParticipantAs a Mavs fan it would be too obvious to say Jason Terry, but Barea was fun to watch because he was so small and pissed people off all the time… Cough cough Bynum

Champzilla21ParticipantJerome Willaims "The Junkyard dog" was one of my fav players to watch when he was with the raptors. Dude was pure hustle and the times he would make an actual great offensive move were fun sometimes then seeing a Carter dunk. Crawford and Manu i wouldnt really say are role players id say more "super-subs". Crawfords averaged as much as 38 mins a game and his career average is 31 min. Manu is close to 30 mins in the reg season but between him coming off the bench and Pops maintenence program it easily could be higher. In the playoffs it is over 30 which the Spurs care the most about obviously.

festar35ParticipantI would have to say Shawn Marion in Dallas is my favorite role player, along with that I really like Ryan Anderson and Tim Hardaway Jr.

BBBBoyleParticipantTaj has been the ultimate role player. Defense and offense. He has been a sixth man candidate. He’s been going to work in the post lately

HitsterParticipantShane Battier sprang to mind when I read the forum topic title and I fully agree with Nick Collinson. I’ll also throw in Tayshaun Prince, Tebo Sefolosha and perhaps Jimmy Butler.

King CaluchaParticipantMaybe we should define what a role player is before discussing? I’d assume role players are guys who play around 20-30 minutes (max) and don’t get plays ran for him too often. At least someone who is not neither 1st, 2nd or 3rd option offensively. Someone like Bruce Bowen comes to mind.
IMO Manu can’t be a role player. He’s been a primary offensive weapon for the team. Even when coming off the bench, he gets starting minutes.

MrManalo43Participantmy favorite is Nick Collison. the man just knows the game, i love him.
as for the Draft, the BEST Role Player will be Dougie McBuckets. slot him as the first off the bench and you’ve got yourself a bonafide lock for 6th man of the year. he’s clearly got limitations on defense and then some, BUT what a team can do, is bet on the fact that when he’s on the floor, they’ll still outscore you. this guy can score for you whenever you want.

CynthiaParticipantThis was a very tough decision, there’s a lot of true role players I really like to watch.
Instead of just picking one I’m going to pick my top three in no particular order:
1. Leandro Barbosa
Now this guy was FUN to watch. He was the definition of a sparkplug off the bench and a situational starter. In general I miss the old run & gun days the Suns had, but I miss Barbosa the most. He’s still in the league and isn’t what he used to be anymore unfortunately.2. Mike Dunleavy
I’ve always liked Mike even though he never lived up to his expectations after leaving college. He’s been very solid and consistent throughout his whole career whether he came off the bench or started. He has no real flash or flair but I can respect consistency.3. Jason Maxiell
I love undersized bigs that can get it done on the boards and make the bigger guys look like fools. This is what Maxiell used to do, another similar player that comes to mind would be Chuck Hayes. Maxiell used to be pretty dang athletic and could throw down some monster dunks. In fact one of my favorite YouTube videos of all time was a Maxiell dunk, and unfortunately I could not find the video or I would have posted it.0 - Posted on: Fri, 03/07/2014 - 2:19am #876995
