So, has everyone jumped off this guy’s bandwagon? He was ranked in the lottery at times last year by many websites/draft prognosticators. Personally I do like him as a defensive player and I can see him fitting an offensive role in the NBA by using his athleticism, moving without the ball and cutting to the basket, using his length and athleticism on the offensive boards, and he’s become a pretty decent passer at around 2 per game, although I think that he would struggle to translate that to the NBA level since they aren’t terribly crisp.

Not everyone is cut out to be a star, and obviously it’s looking like Williams won’t ever become one. But does anyone still hold a favorable opinion towards Rodney?

I have. He’s an athlete learning how to play basketball, and hasn’t improved this season. Can’t shoot or dribble. He’s best in transition where he can use his explosiveness and doesn’t have to shoot or get around opponents. He moves well without the ball and is an above average passer. He’s a good defender too, and can become elite if he keeps improving.

If he keeps improving his jump shot, I think he’ll be in the NBA, just not a lotto pick.

Rodney could simply use his athletic ability in transition to beat guys down the court in that uptempo game. Also the more open spacing in the NBA will help him. With a good PG he could have some easy baskets created for him, and he does have a nice activity level. He lacks skills but he’s got raw ability and some things to bring to the table. I don’t see him improving his J much, though.

Best case scenario, Rodney Williams will be like Wilson Chandler. SUPER unlikely though. He is much more unproductive and raw than Chandler was at DePaul, and Chandler was a bit unpolished back in college. Williams right now is an athlete with nice size, but underdeveloped skills everywhere else, except sometimes on D he can be pretty good.

He was in one of my rival high school’s, and the dude was damn near unguardable. He’s an athletic freak of nature. That said, he’s still raw as far as skills go, and I’m sure it’ll come along eventually. He’ll have some really good games at the U, and he’s capable of playing lockdown defense. He just doesn’t put it together all the time, and with 2 more years of college, he’ll get more consistent, I’m sure. I would compare him to someone like Rodney Carney right now.

We have to remember that he is only a sophomore.  I think the lottery projections were premature.  People saw his 6’7” body and 40 plus inch verticle and started drooling over his potential.  He has nice mechanics on his jumpshot and i can see him improving that if he puts the work in.  He has never really played with an uptempo point guard in college and that has hurt him a lot.  I think that if Al Nolen hadn’t got suspended last year for second semester and hurt early this year, he would be putting up better and more consitent numbers.
