Never saw him play. Seen some serious past half court range on youtube, but thats youtube.

What could the Celtics fans be looking at with him, from those who have seen him more?

Lakers could have taken him 27th, and drafted a big better than Larry Nance Jr with the second pick.

    Clarkson

    Hunter

    Kobe

    Randle

    Okafor

I’ll agree with the poster above that the Lakers could have gotten better value with their pick at 27 but that’s a different conversation.

Celtics fans should actually be happy with their draft.  I know the Rozier pick was questionable with Smart and Thomas in the fold but I really think that there is an underlying story with Smart so Rozier is a nice insurance policy if/when Smart is traded.

With Hunter the Celtics are getting one of the better pure shooters in the draft.  I’m from the Atlanta area and got to see Hunter play quite a bit.  Did a store a while back on here about Hunter, Ware and Harrow.  One of the nights I went and watched him the scouts were raving about how great of a shooter he was but that he was so skinny and udersized from a muscle standpoint that he gets knocked off of his spots too much and that he’ll have to add muscle or he’ll get crushed on screens in the NBA.  He’s great value at #28 and will get PT early on.  He’s not a game changer and really needs help on defense but he’s a solid prospect.  I like his length and basketball IQ.  He’s an extremely confident player and very vocal on the court but off the court he’s a chill guy that’s actually very quiet.

Let’s just put it this way.  He’s no franchise player but, with some work, he’ll be a solid role player in a year or two.

I think RJ Hunter will become a roleplaying starter to 6th man in the NBA, but next year he will probably get limited time off the bench as a shooter. His shooting is his biggest NBA asset although in college he was more of a volume guy so he is going to have to become more efficient. With his basketball IQ and passing ability he needs to become a system guy a team can rely on running the offense and not breaking off the set play and then knock down open shots when they present themselves for him, he is not going to be good enough to just jack up a ton of shots.

I’m very excited for Hunter, and see him having a JJ Reddick/Mike Miller type career, not as good imo, but a player with average athleticism who can shoot great, make smart passes, play average D, and just contribute to winning. He’s kind of a hard player to project because he played in a bad conference and didn’t put up great stats, but to me that only shows that he isn’t that great at creating his own shot. He’s going to be a player that needs another player to set him up, and I’m fine with that if his shot is as good as advertised.

Also, in Brad Steven’s post-draft press-conferense, he avowed that he actually grew up around Hunter who apparently lived in Indiana, and tried recruiting him to Butler, which was news to me. He’s friends with RJ’s dad, and sent him a text after the draft telling him that he would end up with his son "one way or the other." I’m excited that Brad is excited, and am glad that we got a player who is so intune with our coach.

I’m just hoping that Hunter can hit the open shot, and play decent D. If he does that, this pick was a home-run for the Celtics.

I was as surprised as anyone about the nance puck by the lakers, but doing some research after the pick the lakers said they felt their biggest need at 27 was defense and that lance jr really impressed them with his defense. I read that the raptors considered nance at 20 and the clippers were trying to get a draft pick so they could get nance.

Yup, if you draft Russell you’re definitely going to need more defense.

Might as well reach with both first rounders

I wonder if this pick indicates a wavering committment to James Young as the 3 point specialist?  You can’t have too many shooters on a team, but the fact that Hunter goes back with Stevens, and the fact that James Young underwhelmed with his play this year suggests that Young might be losing favor with the Celts.

Young was supposed to come in and add 3 point scoring, but he couldn’t stay on the floor very long and spent a lot of time in the D-League.  If Young doesn’t come out strong this year, and find a spot in the rotation, I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes trade bait.
