It seems as though last summer’s free agency signings set unrealistic expectations for a lot of this summer’s crop. We’re now headed to late-August and there’s still multiple young rotational-starting RFA’s without contracts or even any optimism to reaching terms on a new deal.

Nerlens Noel, Nikola Mirotic, Alex Len, JaMychal Green, Mason Plumlee. I could even throw in Shabazz Muhammad for arguments sake – though his QO got rescinded. That’s 5-6 guys who have had consistent roles of 20+ mpg the past 2 years and have yet to reach their prime (all 27 & under) who can’t find a likeable deal this deep into free agency.

Most teams have either filled out their roster or used up most of their cap space by now. So there’s no reason for their respective teams to negotiate against themselves. Philly is said to be saving their remaining space to extend Covington in Nov. After that, the team with the next most pure cap space is Indy at $7.4 M – not nearly enough to discourage any team from matching on their guy.

Outside of that there’s only 3 options.

    1. Take a below market long-term deal to return with the same team.
    2. Sign the QO and play out the year then try UFA next summer.
    3. Sign-and-trade

The first 2 have their risks for lost money. The player could either have a strong year and be stuck in a contract below their on-court value – or get hurt/have a poor season on the QO and cost themselves big-time. S&T options seem limited too, Chicago has a $15.3 M trade exception and Portland has a $13.0 M TPE.

This is pretty unprecedented…what do you guys see happening with these guys?

Teams over spent last offseason which reduced the amount of money available for this batch of FAs.  Unfortunately for these RFAs only a handful of teams are project to have a lot of cap space next offseason.  That would reduce the incentive of signing the QO to become an UFA next year.

So it seems like they’ll have to take less than they expected for the long term security of a multi-year deal.

I keep thinking that Noel, Mirotic, and Green would be a nice rotation of bigs.  Something for everybody — on the cheap.

If you are a team who needs to rebuild their front line with some Moneyball guys you can start here.

    Is EVERY team broke?

From what I here, sounds like JaMychal Green has the world’s WORST agent, and the Grizz might try to wait him out, and get him to sign for a $2.8 million qualifying offer.

For some of these guys, it is either that OR go overseas to China or somewhere.

Might not be any better next year, and it could be worse.

The guys on this list sound like pretty decent second bigs and IDEAL third bigs.

We assume that these guys have been tended a qualifying offer or can the restricted rights holder just wait until a contract may be signed elsewhere and then choose to match or not without any dialogue with the player.

Teams often shy away from reserved rights guys as the original team can match and they might miss other FA targets in that time and a team is always unlikely to renounce any decent restricted guy to sign another restricted guy as they can end up with no-one.

Also teams in rebuild with cap space will often retain this to take salary dumps as a season progresses in return for additional picks/assets.

Noels needs to find a way on the Cavs hes exactly what they’re missing a rim running rim protecting big who blows up PnRs and deflects everything leading to fast breaks.

Maybe a sign and trade wit Dallas involving Tristan and the Nets pick, they could add top 3-5 protection if anything.

No way they should use the Nets pick in a Noel sign and trade unless they top 20 protect it at the minimum.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Noel rolled the dice on a one year deal and then signed with Boston next summer.
