The Raps played their first summer league game today against the Kings, winning 90-68.  I was impressed with their game today, and just want to post about how the relevant Toronto youngsters performed and improved since we last saw them. FYI this post is clearly very Raps-centic, and I’m sure many forum members who aren’t Toronto fans will lack interest. One player that may interest the masses is:

Bruno Caboclo – 30 min, 15 Pts, 5 Reb, 0 Ast, 3 Stl, 3 TO, 3 treys, 57.3 TS% — Bruno has put on a very necessary 20 lbs over the past year. His shot looks pure and he looked confident shooting out to the 3 point line. He still cannot create off the dribble at all for himself or others, and has little awareness on the offensive end. He looked much improved defensively, showing increased awareness and fundamentals compared to last year’s summer league. His length is obviously a big factor on this end, and his mobility & quick feet come into much more use at this point on the defensive end. He clearly still has a long way to go to learn the game, but his unique potential is very apparent. Likely headed to the D-league roster to begin the season, and should stay there most of the season.

Delon Wright – 22 min, 9 Pts, 9 Ast, 0 TO, 2 Stl, 0-3 3PA, 54.1 TS% — Wright looked great. The ball was in his hands a ton when he was on the court, and the 9:0 A/T ratio speaks volumes about how he managed the offense. He was in complete control, seemingly unfazed by ball pressure. He let the game come to him, attacking when the opportunity presented itself and always making the right & simple play. He did not look confident shooting NBA 3s, and while his shot improved throughout the season at Utah last year, he still needs to put in work to become a floor stretcher in the NBA. His size at the PG position is a big advantage on both ends. He showed why he was so good defensively in college, displaying great fundamentals keeping his man in front and making plays on/off the ball. I think he can absolutely make an impact for the Raps this season, although he won’t be asked to play much unless/until Lowry gets hurt.

Lucas "Bebe" Nogueira – 17 min, 10 Pts, 5 Reb, 1 Stl, 2 Blk, 2 TO, 85.0 TS% — Unfortunately Bebe looked to suffer a minor leg injury in the 3rd quarter – he needs to prove he can stay healthy to become a rotational big man in the NBA. Before that, he looked very good, showing nice touch around the hoop, running the floor and hitting the offensive boards. He didn’t make any bonehead plays and protected the rim like you would expect. I was surprised by the confidence he showed in his mid-range jumper, and his form looked good (at the line as well). He looked capable of contributing this season, but there are few minutes at center to go around in Toronto. I think he’s headed to the D-league to start off, but should get called up when injuries strike.

Norman Powell – 25 min, 20 Pts, 2 Reb, 0 Ast, 2 Stl, 1 Blk, 2 TO, 56.7 TS% — Powell stayed true to his UCLA play-style, being absolutely relentless on both ends of the court. He attacked the rim fearlessly with mixed results, and made a few jumpers (including a 3). He obviously has high level athleticism and length, and I think he was a steal in the middle of the second round. I think he’ll get a contract and earn some playing time with the Raps this year off the end of the bench.

Loved the way my boy Powell played, hit jumpers was gritty on defense as expects, led the game in scoring and was the best guy in the court today. Hope he keeps it up,

Curious of what guys here think of Jordan Bachynski? I loved the guy coming out of last year’s draft and thought for sure he was going to be drafted. Could he crack an NBA rotation? The guy has tremendous size, he is really mobile for his size and most of all can protect the rim. Also, he can also finish well around it. I think he has more than enough tools to make an NBA team, and he did look pretty good a while ago. What do you guys think?

They lacked a defensive presence inside last year, and I always wondered, was Nogueira THAT BAD to not even play when the Raptors’ need are exactly what he brings to the table? He looked really good to me today. Caboclo’s shot was never bad anyway, but added strength seems to make him a dangerous shooter. He can’t drible to save his life though(even if he had a nice and-one on a fast break after dribbling the length of the court). I saw Axel Toupane is in the roster, not an NBA player at this point, but he could be a solid NBA defender. He won’t get much of a chance unfortunately .
