I think this is a great topic of conversation. This year there is a bunch of tight races in the 8-25 range for SG-SF prospects. Some like Hood and Young will be able to play both positions. Im wondering what people on this site think and where you guys would rank these players.

    SF’s-Hood, Mcdermott, Warren, Early

    SG’s-Harris, Young, Stauskas, Lavine

Personally Im not very high on Mcdermott. I also feel that Lavine is trying to become the player Stauskas is now difference being Lavine will have elite athletisism that Stauskas doesnt have. Warren and Early both seem to have tremendous talent but terrible court vision and feel for playmaking. I know my SGs are 1-Harris, 2-Young, 3-Stauskas, 4-Lavine but SF Im not sure, I would even throw Mcdaniels in the mix.

I think James Young can be a SG and SF, but I don’t think Hood can play the 2 if he’s guarding anyone too athletic. However, I’m high on Hood.

I don’t consider Lavine a SG, I think he’s a PG. I’m not ranking him here, but I’d take him before all these guys based purely off potential. Even if UCLA didn’t know how to feature him.

SG- 1) James Young 2) Gary Harris 3) Nick Staukus

SF- 1) Rodney Hood 2) Warren 3) Cleanthony Early

Young is hard to figure out because  he’s supposed to be this great shooter and he just shot ok. Everything else looked good and he has solid form, but I’ll put this one in the hands of scouts and hope he is the shooter they say he is. I think if you want to win today you draft Gary Harris. He’s one of the few players that’s ready and I think he’ll drop in the draft because guys with greater potential and Harris will be taken as soon as a competitive team comes up.  Staukus is a 3 point shooter and can drive in college. I don’t think he’ll be able to drive in pros because of athleticism. To me, that puts him at the bottom of the 1st round.

Hood can do it all. I like him a good deal and he has solid fundamentals. T.J. Warren is pure offense. Sometimes a lack of athleticism stops guys, but I think he’s crafty enough to succeed. Early is a big question mark for me. It’s hard to get enough footage. I may move him up.
You missed 2 guards I like: Jabari Brown and Markel Brown. But that’s another story.

Oh, and McDermott. I think he ‘a a PF. Not because he can rebound, but because I think he ‘ll struggle to run fast enough to guard NBA SF’s. I love the skill though. If he were a SF, I’d put him right behind Rodney Hood. McDermott is insanely skilled on offense and not just 3 pointers, which he’ll probably make even better in the NBA where the spacing is better and the whole other team won’t be guarding him.

McDermott practiced with team USA last year and seemingly held his ground on D. I think he will surprise a lot of haters, as he has not only a brilliant stroke, but he is also a hard worker and a smart kid willing to invest in himself to improve his play (see his one-leg fade-away shot).

I also have my doubts about Young. Yes he has talent (shot, atleticism etc.), but is he able to use in in the flow of the game? He is a high-volume shooter, which is something I really doubt whether you can be succesfull in the league without being a superstar (Jordan Crawford, Thornton etc.).
