There are several SFs in this drafts, whose position varies quite a lot in different mock drafts (from late first to late second or even undrafted), namely DeAndre Daniels, CJ Fair, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Damien Inglis and Alessandro Gentile.

I would added DeAndre Daniels to that list since I don’t really like him as an NBA prospect but most people are pretty sold on him being late first to early second round. I hope you do not dismiss the hole post simply because I listed a guy that most have in a higher tier than the others.

So what do you think of these prospects? How would you rank them?

I currently have them in this order in my mock (don’t bother looking at it, it’s pretty lazy at the moment):

    1. Damien Inglis – 6’8.5 in shoes, 7’3 wingspan, 240 pounds – perfect size for the SF position, excells at the defensive end. He is an unproven player, who I haven’t seen much of, but his combination of size, strength and mobility seems to be worth a gamble in the early to mid second round. Even if offense doesn’t come along could potentially become an Al Farouq Aminu type of player.

    2. DeAndre Daniels – he’s got good size length-wise, but is just 195 lbs and has been extremely underwhelming every time I’ve seen him play. I understand his attractiveness as a prospect – a very long forward that can shoot the three, but I think he doesn’t do anything well enough to become a good NBA role-player. Isn’t really quick or athletic, doesn’t shoot well enough to make it his signature skill.

    3. Thanasis Antetokounmpo – a similar prospect to Inglis plus scouts have seen much more of him, however he is 3 inches shorter, much smaller and 3 years older than Inglis. Outstanding athlete that can become a good defender but I don’t see him doing much more.

    4. CJ Fair – a scorer that will have a tough time playing defence in the NBA. Isn’t a good enough three point shooter to be used as a stretch forward. I think he is a bit like a slightly bigger and less crafty version of DeShaun Thomas from last year’s draft.

    5. Alessandro Gentile – this is the prospect I’m least certain about. I had him in the 35-45 range but recently moved him all the way down to 60. He is a pretty strong forward who excels as a jump-shooter (both from three and mid range). He might not be quick enough to guard forwards in the league, but the main problem with him are his attitude concerns. You don’t want to draft a foreign guy who can become a cancer in the locker room.

I agree with the list. Thanasis has experience playing against grown men; that definitely counts. For a 2nd round pick that’s a valuable player that can get you 10-15 minutes of energy off the bench.

On the other hand, I’m not buying on Gentile. He’s hyped because he’s started playing in the pros at a very young age, but you can find players like that in Europe every 2 years. I don’t see anything really special on this guy and, while he could become a decent player, his attitude problems are a real concern.

I like Inglis and Thanasis too , especially if you can get them in the 2nd round, both have good potential , both could be roll players if not more. I love how hard Thanassis seems to play and that could get him picked and allow him to stick with a team.

    Anton, very solid post.

I have C.J. Fair ranked much lower, though.

    My #4 is Melvin Ejim.

Ejim is a bit of a converted undersized PF, but with his 8’7.5” standing reach and 6’11.25” wingspan has excellent measurables for for an NBA 3. Where he surpasses Fair, IMO, is his outside shooting. Fair is a poor long range shooter, while Ejim shot nearly 7% higher on the year from the 3 point line. Melvin also lead the Big 12 in rebounding during the 12-13 season. I would have pegged him as undrafted at the end of last season, but he really showed improvement as a ballhandler, and passing off the drive this year. He also brings superior one on one perimeter defense, IMO and is a terrior in transition. He may not fit exactly into one mold, but after watching his 48 and 18 game…I think he can find a spot somewhere.

Fair and Ross are fight between 6th and 7th on my list.
