     If Kidd retires, lets say after next season, will the Mavs have to pay him what’s left on his contract? Because signing a 39 year old player to a 3-year deal is a waste of money in that case.

    I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure if a player retires it basically voids the contract.

       Well, it doesn’t matter now since he is going to the Knicks.
