when melo was traded to NY and williams to NJ, lebron said theres a power shift in the NBA. i was in complete disagreement with that, and now after a couple of weeks have passed. i can say with confident that there is no power shift. in fact, i believe the west got slightly better with the trades.

we all already knew DAL, LAL, and SA are elite teams.

OKC got perkins and mohammad, and gave them big men in the inside. this makes them even more dangerous than before.

DEN got a lot of young talents for melo. Yes, they lost a great player, but they have kept winning with this young group. now they have 3 more first round draft picks to work with for the next 3 years also.

POR. i think they are the dark horse in the west. they have battled thru injuries this year, and their records do not reflect how good and how talented this group is. now, they added wallace, it makes them a very deep team with two legit former all stars coming off their bench. they have beaten magic and heat the last two games.  i dont think anyone wants to face them in the playoff.

MEM. this is a team that finally came together. they are winning without their primary guy in GAY. they are not a championship contender yet, but they are showing a lot of promises.

there are also 4 other teams that have 500+ record in utah, hou, pho, and NO.

furthermore, you look at the 4 other teams in the west. GS, LAC, MIN, and SAC. they all have at least one legit all star/all star candidates who they can build their franchise around with. they are 4 young teams that are a a few players away from becoming a more dangerous team.

    power shift? i think not

for about 10 years from 99 when the bulls went south up until this season, i think the west was well ahead of the east and the numbers support that. However i think it is a 50/50 toss now. I still think the west is a little deeper. ALso do not underestimate how much positive impact kendrick perkins can have for OKC. But the east is really good now and has a number of contenders and things are looking like we hav e equality in the conferences for the first time in a while.

     Too many good young teams

OKC: Are they title contenders now? If not soon

MEM: Keep that core together and add a bench and you got a dangerous team

LAC : Gordon and Blake will be a great duo, can they keep Jordan though who is a FA?

GSW: Monta, Curry and DWright are all developing really well, they need a bench and a center

POR : Even if ROy and ODen are done they still have Mathews, Wallace and Aldridge

SAC : With a likely hig lotto guy coming this year they also have Reke and CUz

DEN : They are still really good after the Melo deal and they got a lot of 1st rounders now

Falling off in the near future

SA: They are good now but Timmy and Manu’s clocks are winding down, Jefferson and Mcdyess as well. They have young pieces but no franchise / future all star guys

PHX : Only a matter of time before they completely fall off the map

    HOU : Same as PHX

    Nola: Does CP3 stay?

    UTA: Kinda obvious here

The OKC trades will be bigger than people think…with added size they can make some noise.

The West is still in charge as far as depth goes, but when it comes to elite teams the East is just as dangerous. Boston, Chicago, Orlando, Miami, New York are all championship contenders yearly as are San Antonio, Dallas, Los Angeles. and Oklaholma. Atlanta and Philadelphia dont look like easy matchups as far as the East goes, and in the West any team that can qaulify is really a threat. Great league we have today thats for sure. In the end of it all dont be surprised f we just see the Cetics playing the Lakers…

Why is New York a Championship contender?

For this year, I think both sides have 3 legitamate contenders for the ship.

The East is still a top heavy conference with Boston, Orlando, Chicago and Miami, but the West has 10 teams that could make it….its like the Big East of college ball where they all just beat each other up. But in the end, the NBA is still such a top heavy league catered to the big markets. Their hasnt really been a power shift, but maybe a power balance.

Knicks are close, we’ll see how they do against the Mavs, Celtics and Bulls.  Obviously they can play with Miami, Orlando we’ll see about the other teams.  Right now the Knicks are better than Atlanta and Miami and thats w/out the team being in sync since Billups and a couple other guys are hurt.
