Being a Philadelphia sports fan, I was pretty ecstatic to learn the Sixers earned the second overall pick to the 2010 NBA draft. Being pampered with the success of the Phillies, and even recently the Flyers, there really hasn’t been much to care about what was going on with the Sixers. Before the lottery, the only news they were making were surrounding Doug Collins, the now head coach. And while the Sixers brass discourse Evan Turner as if he is already on the team, here’s a trade scenario on draft day I hope comes into consideration:

    Sixers Get:
    Al Jefferson
    4th Overall Pick

    Minnesota Timberwolves Get:
    Samuel Dalembert
    2nd Overall Pick

Ok, so it appears obvious why this makes sense for the Sixers. Jefferson would bring a major upgrade to the C position, while still being able to pick up a guy, such as Wesley Johnson. Prior to the lottery, any Sixers fan would have been realistically satisfied with the 4th overall selection, and acquiring the likes of Jefferson on top of that would be incredible icing on the cake.

But how about the T’wolves? Well, they’d get their guy in Evan Turner. But here’s something else to consider: Samuel Dalembert has an expiring contract. If you consider having Evan Turner, their 2 other 1st round draft picks this year, Johnny Flynn, Corey Brewer, and Kevin Love, you have a lot of young talent on this team without having a single contract worth over 5mil per season beyond next year. And this is without mentioning next year’s lottery pick, as well as the draft rights to Ricky Rubio. Suddenly, Minnesota would be a place of intrigue, with tons of young talent, and plenty of cap space for the likes of Carmelo Anthony and Nene come 2011 free agency.

    Any Thoughts?

I dont think the sixers would want Al Jefferson. They are stuck with Brand. They have Maurice Speight who can play the 4 and the 5 and is solid of offense there but not so much on defense. I think if Philly makes this deal they asks for 2 of Minnys first round picks as rumoured. Sixer could pick up two solid young pieces that way.

If I were GM for Minny, I would take this without a second’s hesitation. Though Philly supposedly wants 2 of Minny’s picks, and I don’t know how Brand and Jefferson would mesh…as a Wolves fan I would love this deal, but I don’t see how this would be fair for Philly to be stuck with two virtually identical players. I think the Wolves should throw in Ramon Sessions and Pavlovic or something to even it out a bit. I like this deal though. The wolves desperately need someone like Turner, and to be rid of either Jefferson or Love (preferably Jefferson).

I dont like this trade for either team. Philly Gets another anchor to slow down its front court, And trades away one of the best talents in the draft.

IF the 76rs are going to trade away the Number 2 pick brand’s contract must be moved with it.

as for Minny, Hopefully they can get more from jefferson then dalembert’s expiring contract

Aren’t the Sixers trying to dump Elton Brand’s contract?

I don’t like this trade for the Wolves. Cap space does us no good since we can only use it to sign half stars like Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay (Melo isn’t relocating to the TC).

Evan Turner will be good, but is he going to be THAT good? Even if he’s Brandon Roy-lite it’s not worth potentially passing on Cousins. I personally would love to pair Love with Cousins, giving the Wolves the big frontcourt necessary to play with the big teams out West. I think the Wolves should sit tight, take Cousins when he falls into their lap, and not get trade happy trying to get “their man” — anyone remember how the Randy Foye-B. Roy trade worked out?!

A better deal would be IF Bosh ends up heading to Chicago — then the Wolves could get in a on three way deal where:

Chi gets: Bosh via sign and trade
Minny gets: Deng, Kirk Heinrich and throw-ins
Toronto gets: Al Jeff, and throw-ins (gomes, expiring deals, whatever)

Obviously the money would have to work out right under the CBA but this benefits everyone involved. Surely Al Jeff is on par with whatever Toronto would get back in a sign and trade for Bosh — Battier, Jordan Hill, all those bums from Houston, whatever bums the Knicks would give (D. Lee included), etc.

Wolves could roll out this line-up:

    PG: Flynn
    SG: Kirk Heinrich/Deng
    SF: Corey Brewer
    PF: K. Love
    C: Cousins

Bench: Sessions, Heinrich/Deng (sixth man), and the other supremely average players we have

This could work within Kurt Rambis’s triangle…8th seed here we come!
