Who would you start a franchise with?

Give me the 20 year old DPOY contender with the legit 7’3" height and KG level athleticism and game.

‘Cept KG never had a 3, beyotch.

    Sincerely,

It’s actually an interesting question. Between porzingis and towns at least. Durant is in a different category because he is already a finished product and you can’t compare him to guys with only a year experience. They are not in the same category right now.

Porzingis has the potential to be a type of player the league has never really seen before and you could argue that he has even more upside than towns. A 7-3 guy with  legit 3 point range, athleticism and fluid movement is basically unprecedented in the NBA. However, Towns seems like the surer thing at this point. He seems for sure like a guy that you can almost pencil in for 20 and 10 while anchoring your defense for the next decade and players like that just don’t grow on trees. I’m not even sure exactly what porzingis will be yet or how he would best be utilized. That’s why I would go with  towns right now. This has the potential to a fascinating debate for the next decade or so, maybe this generation’s Duncan-garnett.

Towns ability to anchor defense is questionable. He’s a good defender in space, but he will offer little more than league-average rim protection.

Doesn’t have the combination of length, athleticism of Porzingis, Embiid or Maker. I even like Myles Turner better on the defensive end.

Considering these guys are all around the same age as KAT and better defenders, it’s hard to call him anything other than "league average" on that end of the floor.

Please…. more of the same from my boy T Rex.

I will remove Durant from this question because… well it’s obvious.  I would take 5 upcoming good years from Durant over 15 from Towns.

But between Towns and Zinger??  It’s Towns all day.  He’s younger… less professional experience and he still outperformed Porzingis.  Towns does everything and will always be a better rebounder than Porzingis.  In time he will be every bit the 3 point shooter Porzingis is except he will realize that he won’t need to float on the perimeter and shoot jump shots all day like Porzingis.

The only thing Porzingis has on Towns in my opinion right now is his ridiculous height.

Towns can’t anchor a defense?  Porzingis won’t be able to either.

Let’s not forget that Porzingis had been playing professional basketball for years longer than KAT.  For that reason his ceiling will come a lot quicker IMO.

The top 4 from that draft is going to be really good either way you slice it.

Towns, Russell, Booker and Porzingis.  I don’t buy for one second that the 2017 draft class will be better than that class as many project.

Russell and Booker look like legitimate number one scoring options.  Both look poised to average 25-30 ppg at some point in their careers.  Of course Hype and T Rex won’t give Dangeruss his due because of his attitude and his athleticism.  That’s okay, he scores and plays effortlessly.

Unfortunately for Porzingis he will be playing with Melo for the forseeable future.  That pretty much tempers any breakout expectations that I might have for him and Melo will not let someone else be the man on that team.  Russell only had to deal with such selfishness for one year from Kobe.  Porzingis has at least 3 more.

Porzingis might become the best defender of all time, and yet you only write the word "defense" once in your whole SI For Kids style post. And you only wrote "defense" to try to knock Porzingis.

Good luck with your fantasy basketball this year, your post screams "I play fantasy basketball, and often get lost in that alternate reality."

Porzingis right now and probably KAT later depending how well he responds to Thibodeau.. I really believe Porzingis being around Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony will hinder his development to a degree, still believe he’s going to be a great ball player but its hard to think the habits of Rose and Melo wont rub of on Porzingis..

    I’ll take a 20 y/o Durant over 20 y/o Towns/Porzingis.

I’ll check back with you in five years. KAT will be the better product. The only thing that can be an argument is that KD might have 5 rings by then… and that is only because of him joining GSW, which i consider to be a really lame move. What was he thinking? Don’t he have any pride in himself? As a winner?

Advanced stats are only part of the equation, but in terms of Defensive Win Shares, KAT and Kristaps were virtually identical at 2.8 and 2.9 per game.

While Kristaps’ 33% on 3.4 attempts per game was quite impressive, Karl Towns actually shot 34% on an admittedly smaller sample size.

    KAT’s mid-range efficiency was insane, which is a huge plus in my book. 3-9 feet (465%) 10-15 feet (410%) 16-3 (506%)

Kristaps’ had a solid, but less impressive first season in terms of jump shooting. 3-9 feet (.356%) 10-15 (405%) 16-3 (.454%)

What was kind of shocking for me when I dove in a little deeper is how rarely these giants dunked the ball, which I think is a knock on their early career strength, and I would assume will improve for each player.

KAT only had 72 dunks and Kristaps only had 52. One difference I noticed though in terms of low post efficiency was KAT shot 70% at the rim, and Kristaps only shot about 57%.

To put that in perspective how bad that is for Kirstaps… Darren Collison (64%) Kyle Lowry (61%) Jason Terry (65%) Jameer Nelson (63%) so needless to say his at the rim clip is below the first 4 point guards of smaller stature I looked up, the 5th I looked up was Ish Smith who came in at 56%…just 1% worse than Porzingis.

I think this number will make a huge jump during the course of his career, but it’s definitely an eye brow raiser, and a little insight in to how he needs to improve his toughness, and strength. If you watch a lot of fledgling bigs, you can tell this is often influenced by a post defender knocking them off balance, or the offensive post player not being able to shoot with contact.

Compared to the best bigs of todays game as rookies you can see Anthony Davis (71%) Andre Drummond (69%) Lamarcus Aldridge (71%) DeAndre Jordan (70%) Nikola Vucevic (66%) Demarcus Cousins (63%)

I truly think both guys, if they can stay healthy, will continue to progress and have great careers. My eye test, leans towards KAT, and after digging a little deeper, I still have to pick him, but if I really had my choice, I’d pick Joel Embiid 😉

KP’s praiseworthy volume of 3 point attempts (and makes) is why he had so few dunks. KP was stretching defenses out to the 3 point line 24/7.

KP’s Olynyk Effect on the team stats is a huge factor in his greatness.

That’s fine, but they’re different types of players. KAT took 394 shots at the rim and made them at a 71% clip. That is extremely efficient.

He was 20th in the league in TS% as a rookie! and he shot plenty of the mid range, and even hit a limited amount of 3’s at 34% rate.

Sure, he doesn’t stretch the defense out to the 3 point line to the extent of Kristaps, but he’s EXTREMELY efficient, and unlike many of the big men ranked in the top 20 last season, he actually is more than a dunker. His mid-range clips were awesome for a 20 year old big man.

I’m not anit-Kristpas, in fact, I like him quite a bit, especially the way he crashes the glass from the perimeter. That’s a very unique characteristic from a perimeter big. Most don’t show that aggression coming in the lane after misses. I just like KAT a little better, and think despite their different playing styles, I prefer that kind of efficiency, and think he could be a 7 foot player that develops into a Karl Malone/Dirk level mid range jump shooter.

My fantasy basketball team will be named Flat Earthers for Trump and will select Kristaps Porzingas with my first pick.  That is all.

Porzingas vs. Towns will be the new Russell vs. Wilt with Porzingas being a combination of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain.

I’m not including Durant in this because he has nothing to do with KAT or KP other than his initials start with K. As a T-Wolves fan it’s easy for me to go with KAT, he has no weakness, does everything well, he has played  well beyond my expectations. However I watched the knicks vs Wolves game and KP looks like he could become a scary player. He blocked Wiggins multiple times and it looked easy, his size reminds me of Rik Smits but a much, much better player. Plus his 3point shooting should become really good.

At the end of the day I would take KAT just because European players usually fall apart in the playoffs I know that sounds bad but for whatever reason over seas players break down more frequently. I may end up completely wrong and I wouldn’t be suprised by which  player becomes better would go wth  KAT.
