Dgtool2ParticipantI was listening to Fox Sports Radio the other afternoon and one of the shows "experts" were saying that if Spoelstra 3-peats (which after game 4 doesn’t look like its going to happen) then as a coach, he is in the same conversation as being as good of a coach as Popovich. Does anyone agree with this statement? At least one guy on the radio out of the four that were debated this didn’t agree. I strongly disagree. Spoelstra does have the potential to be in that conversation, but he has to continue strong showings more than 6 seasons. Let’s compare. Popovich has been head coach of the Spurs for 18 seasons. In those 18 seasons, he has led the Spurs to 4 titles since 1999 (about to be 5), they have made the playoffs each season with 50 wins or more each of those seasons (except the lockout seasons in 1998-99 where they won 75% of their games and finished 37-13). Spoelstra for the sake of the argument would have 3 titles and four NBA Finals appearances in six seasons? Thoughts?

DondiJohnParticipantTo summarize Pop’s NBA Coaching Career
Not only that, but before his coaching career he was the GM and VP of Basketball Operation of the Spurs.
Three Time Coach of the Year

ChoppyParticipantAnd one of those seasons was a lockout where they won over 70% of their games. After his first season, has NEVER had a season with a win percentage less than 61%. Is that a record? I know Bill Russel’s Celtics were dominant for ages but Pop and his spurs would have to be close. One of the best ever.
Spo is a good coach, but he can’t even tie Pop’s laces when it comes to coaching.

Toronto16ParticipantHahaha… If you gave Popovich that Heat team in 2010, they would have run off 4 straight titles.

mercyman25ParticipantSpo remembered he was just a videographer. Lets put it this way. Lebron in Cleveland by himself was almost achieving what he has with the Heat. That was with coach Brown. Now we’ve seen how good of a coach Brown really is with the Lakers and his repeat with the Cavs. Turible. Lebrons current team is so much better now, and Lebrons maturity and game have grown so much. What I am saying is the heat could be coached by a toaster and achieved the same, Possibly more.

doubledribblerParticipantIt doesn’t make a lot of sense to compare the two. Spo is very early in his career and has won two titles and been to four finals. You can say oh look he has the best player, but pretty much every team that wins the finals or makes it to the finals usually has at least one MVP caliber guy in the league. Spo is doing everything he can, but he doesn’t have a lot of options. Everyone knows the Spurs improved their team from last year and Miami got worse. Miami barely beat the Spurs then. Wade is worse, Battier is worse, Allen is probably a little worse, Anderson is worse (some of that I think is health), Haslem is worse, losing Mike Miller, not sure if Chalmers is worse, but your coach cannot hit open jumpers for you, play defense for you or rebound for you. The only guy that has improved is Lebron and he has improved on a lot of things since he has been in Miami. Sure it looks a lot like Cleveland right now with it being Lebron vs the Spurs, but I am not sure how much of that you throw on Spo’s shoulders because I have some other star players that have a lot that they need to be accountable for.

From top to bottom no team is ran better. I give Pop credit for not only changing his offense over the years, giving guys a decent amount of freedom to just go out and play, and taking care of his players health (I’m looking at you Thibs). He also has a great feel for his team because both he and Buford are getting guys that fit what they need and then Pop goes out and experiments all season long and gets the bench guys minutes during meaningful games. Guys like Danny Green find success with the Spurs because they bring you in to do what they know you can do and don’t try to make you into something else. If you develop and improve on those things and you are patient then your role increases in their system. Also give credit to guys like Parker and Duncan taking less money to win and the scouting department for so many great finds (even guys that they never kept like Leandro Barbosa, Luis Scola and Goran Dragic).
