10 D-1 schools are banned from postseason play next year due to poor academics.  Uconn is the most prominenet school on the list, Towson and UNC-Wilmington are also banned.  I think it’s very sad that many basketball players can’t maintain minimal aut thecademic proficiency in order to play.  Most student athletes aren’t taking Advanced Physics or Bio-Chemistry.  I know that many student athletes get a bad rap, and many are very smart and go to class, but the small few that use college as a playground when they are given a full scholarship to play a sport, is an embarrassment to their institution.

I went to VCU.  My senior writing seminar class for my Criminal Justice class had one basketball player in it.  The next class, he was gone.  One other criminal justice course I took had a basketball player in it.  He showed up for one lecture all semester and didnt show for the final.  I understand many players use college as a one way stop for the NBA.  Most college players don’t make the NBA and are in college for 4 years.  I just think it’s sad that some institutions academics are so bad academically, that they get banned from playing post-season basketball.  The academic requirements can’t be that difficult to obtain and I know tutoring and extra help is always available for the players.

I don’t understand how academic requirements can be such an issue. I am a student athlete in college right now, swimming. We also have two a day practices on weekdays which nearly kill us regularly plus saturday practices, yet in my 3 years so far, only one teammate has been academically ineligible. The fact that college athletes are actually students first has to be taken more seriously. If they don’t want to go to class, or learn anything, they shouldn’t get into a college on a full ride scholarship, they shouldn’t even get into college. There are too many students who deserve it but still can’t get into the university or afford it to afford special consideration to someone who can bounce a ball, put it in a hoop and sell some tickets. This shouldn’t just apply to basketball, but all sports as well. And please don’t mention the amount of money it brings into the school. The amount of money that goes into these programs is truly obscene.
