Clyde Drexler vs. Vince Carter – Carter could have been one of the greatest ever if he put it all on the floor every night, but he never developed as a defender, stopped attacking the rim after his mid 20’s and developed a reputation as soft. Clyde the Glide was a superior passer, rebounder and defender and he never stopped going hard to the basket. Edge: Drexler

Dominique Wilkins vs. Paul Pierce – A bit difficult to compare the two. Pierce is the better passer and slightly better defender but Nique was one of the most dominant scorers off all time. The guy averaged at least 25.9 PPG for ten straight seasons including hitting the 30 PPG mark twice in that span! For his straight out dominance I have to give the edge to…Edge: Wilkins

Gary Payton vs. Deron Williams – two franchise point guards with great size and strength. Williams has higher passing numbers but Payton scored at a higher clip. Payton is arguably the greatest defensive PG in NBA history though and for now I will give him the edge but with one compromise. The question is "which player in their prime would you pick" and Deron just turned 27, the Glove didn’t hit his prime until his late 20s so it is conceivable that we haven’t seen Deron’s prime yet. Edge: Payton for now.

Alonzo Mourning vs. Dwight Howard – My favorite player in NBA history against my favorite player right now…this one is tough for me. I’ll give the edge to Superman because he is the better rebounder and has shown that his offensive game is improving. Dwight also brings better size to the table. It would have been interesting to see Mourning play in the this era instead of in the shadow of Shaq and to a lesser extent David Robinson, Ewing and Olajuwon. Edge: Howard.

Chris Mullin vs.Carmelo Anthony – Mullin was a terrific scorer and was a bit better as a passer but Melo is a slightly better rebounder and also a dynamic scorer. Melo’s size, strength and versatility as a scorer is what seperates him from Mullin. Edge: Anthony

Wayman Tisdale vs. Zach Randolph – Also not really close. Tisdale only averaged 18 or more PPG on two occasions and never averaged more than 7.7 RPG. Randolph has hit the 10 RPG mark six times and the 20 PPG plateau five times and he is currently just hitting his peak. Edge: Randolph

Larry Bird vs. Dirk Nowitzki – Not close. Bird was not just a great scorer he was a slightly better rebounder than Dirk, a much better defender and he was the greatest passing forward in NBA history until LBJ came along. Edge: Bird.

Tim Hardaway vs. Chris Paul – Hardaway had that killer first step and crossover but CP3 is a better shooter, better defender, less selfish and doesn’t turn over the ball as much. Edge: Paul

Patrick Ewing vs.Amare Stoudemire – Not even close. Ewing was not just a great scoring big man, he was a true center who defended and rebounded at a high level, Amare’s two weaknesses. Edge: Ewing

Isaiah Thomas vs.Jason Kidd – Kidd has the edge in terms of rebounding and defending. Passing is practically a push and Ike was the better scorer. What seperates them is the fact that Thomas proved that he was capable of carrying a team to greatness; twice. Thomas’s will to win and overall competitiveness are legendary. Edge: Thomas

John Stockton vs.Steve Nash – As great as Nash is as a shooter and passer, Stockton was a slightly better passer, almost as good of a shooter and a much better defender. Edge: Stockton.

Charles Barkley vs.Kevin Garnett – two power forwards with terrific all around games, however Barkley’s height ensured that he could never be a great defender while Garnett is one of the best defenders in NBA history. Edge: Garnett

Bernard King vs. Tracy Mcgrady – This would be closer if King hadn’t been so badly injured as it stands they were both unstoppable scorers in their prime but TMac was the better passer and was more consistant on a night to night basis despite teams game planning to stop him. Edge: McGrady

Which player in their prime would you pick:

Clyde Drexler vs. Vince Carter- Vince is my boy but I think Clyde was better all around

Dominique Wilkins vs. Paul Pierce- 2 more of my favs, but I gotta go with Nique, he would get more minutes at guard today I think than he did when he was playing.

Gary Payton vs. Deron Williams- damn u picked some good ones, I luv the Glove but D-Will is my man.

Alonzo Mourning vs. Dwight Howard- Zo more skilled offensively but Dwight more dominant all around

Chris Mullin vs.Carmelo Anthony- only because Melo is such a matchup problem

Wayman Tisdale vs. Zach Randolph- good lawd, the way Z-bo played in the playoffs, man he was a monster but Waymon was such a smooth PF

Larry Bird vs. Dirk Nowitzki- this is not a tough pick at all.  as unstoppable as Dirk is, this still is a no brainer to me, Bird is just way better all around and about as mentally tough as they come

Tim Hardaway vs. Chris Paul– Hardaway was an excellent scorer but CP3, point guard skills damn near unmatched.

Patrick Ewing vs.Amare Stoudemire- I am sorry but I dont think this is close, Ewing all day.

Isaiah Thomas vs Jason Kidd– man, I just dont think there is another PG that could do ALL the things J-Kidd can do.  I thought Zeke was arguably the best PG ever, but Magic and J-Kidd are better players.

John Stockton vs.Steve Nash- now I know I may be in the minority here but I think Nash was better, he defense gives him a huge hit but still, its my personal preference to go with Nash, but like I said, I am sure I will be in the minority.

Charles Barkley vs.Kevin Garnett– once again I know people may choose Barkley but his work ethic sucked, I am not sure he is the warrior KG is, nor do I think he had the winning attitude that KG has.  KG made his team and team-mates better, I dont think Barkley did.  Skills wise, Barkley was good, but mentally KG is an animal like I have never seen.

Bernard King vs. Tracy Mcgrady– 2 of my favorite players of all-time and I am still a big fan of T-Mac.  I may have to go tie on this because I love them both, but I will give the edge to T-Mac only because of his ballhandling and versatility.  B-King was a true warrior with such a tremendous heart and he was unstoppable as a scorer.

Clyde Drexler vs. Vince Carter-no doubt clyde had the better career. But vince’s best season makes it close. Im going with clyde though.

Dominique Wilkins vs. Paul Pierce-ill take pierce. Wilkins was a little selfish for my liking.

Gary Payton vs. Deron Williams-the glove all day every day

Alonzo Mourning vs. Dwight Howard-close one. Give me dwight though.

Chris Mullin vs.Carmelo Anthony-Ill take melo. Mullins lack of athleticism would limit him in todays game a bit.

Wayman Tisdale vs. Zach Randolph-zbo, this is an easy one.

Larry Bird vs. Dirk Nowitzki-tough one. ill take dirk becasue the guy is 7 feet tall and im not sure bird could be an mvp in todays league.

Tim Hardaway vs. Chris Paul-cp3. Hardaway put up great numbers but paul runs the show the right way.

Patrick Ewing vs.Amare Stoudemire-ewing, easy one. He was true center and defended the paint.

Isaiah Thomas vs.Jason Kidd-thomas is my pick. Tough one though.

John Stockton vs.Steve Nash-at their absolute best, ill take nash. Better scorer and both were insane passers.

Charles Barkley vs.Kevin Garnett-barkley. KG’s defense makes this close, but barkley in his prime could put a team on his back better then kg ever could.

Bernard King vs. Tracy Mcgrady-tmac in his prime was arguably the best scorer in the game and just had more weapons then bernard did and was more skilled all around. The only thing bernard has an advantage in is toughness.

Well, I guess I dont know what I am talking about then…I wasnt looking at numbers when I didnt select Randolph, the question was not who was better, or I wouldve said him.  The question was "WHO WOULD YOU PICK?" I say Tisdale because I thought he fit in better.

I always love to come on this forum and play Devils Advocate…and I ask you…when have you seen a player as talented as Randolph that puts up double doubles for most of his career so oft-traded?  This year with the Grizz was the first time he really made a significant impact on a team, if not he wouldnt have been traded so much.  People on here and elsewhere up until the playoffs this year were talking about how bad his contract is and up until the playoffs, there was still talk of the Grizz trying to get rid of him.  Only after his performance did it look like they would resign him.  Whether it has been questions about his character or his team play, there has to be a reason why teams were so easy to give up a guy who puts up the numbers that he does on a consistent basis.

I like Z-Bo but I think he is just recently starting to round a curve.  Had Rudy not went out and Z-Bo had a chance to put the team on his back like he did, he was on the way to joining his 5th team, even though he is an All-Star calibur player.  Double-double guys are not easy to come by, yet for the past few years, Z-Bo contract has been seen as an albatross for every team he has been with.

Clyde Drexler vs. Vince Carter – Drexler. Not a difficult pick for me at all. Carter had some terrific seasons, but was always more sizzle than steak in my opinion.

Dominique Wilkins vs. Paul Pierce – Pierce. Wilkins was the more explosive scorer and athlete, but Pierce has the better overall game. Pierce really has a complete game as a player. Wilkins couldn’t pass the ball and didn’t really defend like he was capable of.

Gary Payton vs. Deron Williams – Payton. He’d lock you up and then go drop 20 and 10. Had a complete game as a player. I also think he had more leadership qualities.

Alonzo Mourning vs. Dwight Howard – Mourning. I’ll go with Mourning as of right now. He was the better offensive player. You could run an offense through him consistently and he’d either score or make the right pass. He wasn’t a liability from the free-throw line either. Plus, he was an amazing defender as well.

Chris Mullin vs. Carmelo Anthony – Anthony. Mullin was a great team player, but his talent and overall ability just doesn’t really come close to Anthony’s.

Wayman Tisdale vs. Zach Randolph – Randolph. It’s really not close, though Tisdale was a good player.

Larry Bird vs. Dirk Nowitzki – Bird. He wasn’t seven feet, but 6′ 10" isn’t too bad. Bird was the better rebounder, ball handler and passer… Better court vision. Better leader. Bird was a killer and is one of the best competitors to ever play. Before this season, Nowitzki was most known for his teams collapses in the playoffs.

Tim Hardaway vs. Chris Paul – Paul. Hardaway was explosive and talented as well, but Paul is the better point guard by far in my opinion.

Patrick Ewing vs. Amare Stoudemire – Ewing. I couldn’t stand him, but he was a great center who could control the paint at both ends.

Isaiah Thomas vs. Jason Kidd – Thomas. This is close though. I went with Thomas because of the fire, killer instinct and competitiveness he played with. He was tough as sh*t. Kidd is a great overall point guard and put had MVP caliber seasons in New Jersey, but I’d go with Thomas.

John Stockton vs. Steve Nash – Stockton. I don’t think it’s really close. Before Nash was doing the 50, 40, 90 and 10 assists… Stockton was doing it, while also being a better defender and a tougher player (though Nash is tough too). He also didn’t play in an inflated offensive system.

Charles Barkley vs. Kevin Garnett – Garnett. This is tough because despite only being 6′ 6", Barkley was a beast. A complete offensive game and a monster on the glass. I’d go with Garnett though just because of his defensive ability and his focus/dedication to getting better and winning. Those are things you couldn’t always say about Barkley. During his time in Houston, Pippen said Barkley only cared about numbers. During his time in Boston, Garnett sacrificed his numbers for the betterment of the team and won a ring.

Bernard King vs. Tracy Mcgrady – McGrady. Both explosive scorers, but McGrady had more offensive tools to work with. Too bad both players suffered from injuries.

Which player in their prime would you pick:

If this was 1 on1 would definatley be different.

Clyde Drexler vs. Vince Carter- Drexler he was better overall and unlike Carter didn’t dissapear in big moments so much.  Carter the better athlete and 3 pt shooter but thats it.

Dominique Wilkins vs. Paul Pierce- Pierce an underrated passer, a better 3 pt shooter and very clutch.  Still Dominque was slightly better and an all-time great scorer..

Gary Payton vs. Deron WilliamsPayton because he was a better defender and an all-time great PG.  Deron isn’t there yet.

Alonzo Mourning vs. Dwight Howard- Mourning for now thought I think Howard will be better in a couple years since he’s still young.

Chris Mullin vs.Carmelo Anthony- Melo is a better defender and tougher to guard.

Wayman Tisdale vs. Zach Randolph– Zebo he puts up big numbers year after year.  Tisdale was a great guy but not a great player.

Larry Bird vs. Dirk Nowitzki- Bird a better defender and obviously won more.  Dirk definately got closer with the ring.

Tim Hardaway vs. Chris Paul– CP3 will go down as an all-time great PG, Hardaway isn’t as good.

Patrick Ewing vs.Amare Stoudemire- Ewing but Amare is hitting his prime now and he’s a PF really.  They had different games too even though both can hit the perimeter jump shot.

Isaiah Thomas vs Jason Kidd– Kidd a better defender and could score in his prime too.  Isiah was a better scorer overall but Kidd the better passer.

John Stockton vs.Steve Nash- Stockton he was a great passer, shot great and up there in steals all time.  Nash has benefited from the Suns offense more than any other player.

Charles Barkley vs.Kevin Garnett- Barkley was more clutch and a better scorer and rebounder.  If not for facing Hakeem n MJ in the playoffs 3 years in a row he probably would’ve gotten a ring.  KG an all-time great defender but never made it out of the 1st round in Minnesota for what 6 or 7 years.  He was never great in the playoffs and w/out the Pierce and Allen would never be close to a ring even.

Bernard King vs. Tracy Mcgrady- I’ll go with Bernard King, Tmac scored a ton of pts with the Magic who were an awful team.  Then even with Yao he couldn’t get out of the 1st round.  King was no slouch as a scorer himself.

@surve, you say the question isnt who was better but who would you pick with all things considered including off court stuff. Well i guess technically you are correct but if you are basing these picks not on who was the best plyer i think you are taking a different approach then everyone else. But even assuming its who would you pick based on their prime, zbo has been in his prime these past few seasons in memphis and he hasnt done anything wrong off the court. So im not sure you could hold his past off court problems against him based on his prime years(which are taking place now) which is what the question is asking.

Z-Bo has been in his prime these past few years but I dont think he has been moved so much because of his off court problems.  Everytime he is moved it is to unload his contract.  Which is basically saying that the player is not making enough of a difference in the team’s success to warrant the contract.  Like Marbury, everywhere he went he put up great numbers during his prime, but the teams didnt improve, therefore he wasnt a hot commodity given his contract.

Sometimes, its finding the right team and a little bit of luck.  I think that Z-Bo has now found the right team and I am sure the Grizz want to do what they can to keep him.  During his prime, which is still going on…I dont think Z-Bo has been a difference maker despite his stats until finding a home in Memphis.  Z-Bo has been with more teams than Tisdale in less seasons played.  So my argument is not a popular one, I understand that, but had Z-Bo been a difference maker before Memphis I wouldve chosen him.  Its cool though bro, I respect your views, I just like to throw controversy in there every now and then.  LOL.

I really disagree with taking thomas over kidd.

Kidd has better size, defense, court sense, passing, playmaking ability, similar jump shot. Just not as dangerous of a scorer.

Relatively equal career success. Kidd with worse teams though.

I mean kidd is one of the top 5 greatest triple double threats of all time. come on

It’s certainly not an easy decision. But I disagree with the opinion that Kidd had better passing and playmaking ability and I just feel that in the prime of their careers Ike could take over games on a whole other level.

Obviously there’s more to basketball than stats but here’s just an example of arguably each of their prime seasons. Certainly a close call regardless of which way you pull.

    Isiah, 1985: 21.2 PPG, 13.9 APG, 4.5 RPG, 2.3 SPG, 46 FG%, 81 FT%, 22.2 PER

    Kidd, 1999:  16.9 PPG, 10.8 APG, 6.8 RPG, 2.3 SPG, 44 FG%, 76 FT%, 22.5 PER

Dominique Wilkins is one of the best scorers ever to play the game.  Pierce has a bit more of an all-round game.

I think in a few years you might be able to compare:

    Melo vs Nique

    Durant vs Nique

Drexler was a beast – he is a bit underrated though because he was in the jordan era and was overshadowed by MJ.

I think Mitch Richmond vs Vince Carter would be closer….

Yes, it definitely is a difficult decision.  I say Magic and Kidd were 2 totally different animals when it came to PG because of how unique they were.  On the other hand, long has Zeke been considered THE prototype for Point Guards.  I like Kidd’s all-around game so I picked him, but thinking back now, I think Zeke may have been a little easier to win with.   Zeke could take over on a whole other level…but when Kidd was dominating the boards like he did, his way of dominating from his position was something different too.
