OldSkoolBasketballParticipantlets say Popovich was the one coaching the Lakers in 1999-present and Phil was coaching the Spurs in 1999-present. Would the teams be more successful, about the same, or least successful?

NashyMingParticipantI think Phil Jackson would be more successful leading the Spurs than Greg Popovich leading the Lakers.
The core of the Spurs from 1999 to present are:
David Robinson
Tim Duncan
Tony Parker
Manu GinobiliThe core of the Lakers from 1999 to present are:
Shaq O’Neal
Kobe Bryant
Pau Gasol
Lamar Odom
Andrew BynumGreg Popovich’s tough love approach worked very well with all the core players with the Spurs. That’s why they have a greatly successful team since the arrival of Tim Duncan. However, his tough love approach may not work with big ego players like Shaq and Kobe. I am not sure if Shaq in his prime or Kobe would buy into the tough love approach by Popovich. The Lakers team under Popovich may break up much earlier than in 2003 when Shaq and Kobe divorced. As good as Popovich, he certainly needs to have high character players or mature players to accept his tough love.
On the other hand, Phil Jackson got a great handle of his players and know when to be tough and when to be soft with his players. Given the Spurs core of high character players, PJ would have no troubles in leading the Spurs. Also, the triangle offense would work perfectly with the Spurs core. Tim Duncan, Ginobili and Tony Parker would have no problems being successful in triangle offense.

NYK2010ParticipantWho knows but I’d say they’d have similar success.
Poppovich would definately have the Lakers with Shaq, Kobe, Fisher, Fox playing great D.
That triangle offense wouldn’t work with a PG like Parker but with Duncan, Ginobli he’d have success for sure.0 - Posted on: Mon, 05/17/2010 - 10:40am #316970
stanford hoopsi agree, that tough love might not work with kobe and shaq. with phil he knows how to coach every type of player. crazy players or lazy or great IQ players. pop has always had certain type of guys, hard workers with high basketball IQ that are cool with following orders
